Abstract

Compositions (3) and methods of using such compositions (3) to condition, clean, or disinfect the flow path of a conduit (8) of a microfluidic devices (16), such as flow cytometers or liquid chromatographs.

38. An antimicrobial composition, comprising:

a. an amount of water; and

b. an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent.

39. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 38, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume is selected from the group consisting of:

an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 6 percent and about 10 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of greater than about 6 percent but less than an amount which generates the azeotrope of the mixture, an amount of diacetone alcohol greater than an amount which generates the azeotrope of the mixture but less than about 15 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol which generates the azeotrope of the mixture, an amount of diacetone alcohol of about 10 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of about 12 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 10 percent and about 12 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 10 percent and about 15 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of about 15 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 15 percent and about 20 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of about 20 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 15 percent and about 25 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 20 percent and about 30 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 25 percent and about 35 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 30 percent and about 40 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 35 percent and about 45 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 40 percent and about 50 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 45 percent and about 55 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 50 percent and about 60 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 55 percent and about 65 percent, and an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 60 percent and about 70 percent.

40. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 39, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume sufficient to reduce the number of viable microorganisms to zero in a duration of time of not greater than about 5 minutes.

41. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 39, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume sufficient to reduce the number of viable microorganisms to nearly zero in a duration of time of not greater than about 5 minutes.

42. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 39, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume sufficient to significantly reduce the number of viable microorganisms in a duration of time of not greater than about 5 minutes.

43. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 39, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume sufficient to reduce the number of viable microorganisms in a duration of time of not greater than about 5 minutes.

44. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 39, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume sufficient to reduce the number of viable microorganisms to zero in a duration of time of not greater than about 45 minutes.

45. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 39, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume sufficient to reduce the number of viable microorganisms to nearly zero in a duration of time of not greater than about 45 minutes.

46. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 39, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume sufficient to significantly reduce the number of viable microorganisms in a duration of time of not greater than about 45 minutes.

47. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 39, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume sufficient to reduce the number of viable microorganisms in a duration of time of not greater than about 45 minutes.

48. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 39, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume sufficient to reduce the number of viable microorganisms in a duration of time not greater than about 5 minutes, and wherein said viable microorganisms are selected from the group consisting of:

E. coli (ATCC 25922, MRI EC

     13), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027, MRI Ps

     10), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538, MRI Sta

     21), Aspergillus niger (ATCC 16404, MRI AN

     2), and Clostridium sporogenes (ATCC 19404, MRI Cl

     12).

49. An antimicrobial composition, comprising:

a. an amount of water; and

b. an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume, wherein the resulting mixture has a sufficient amount of diacetone alcohol to provide a reduction in a population of microorganisms in a duration of time not greater than about 45 minutes.

50. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 49, wherein said duration of time not greater than 45 minutes is selected from the group consisting of:

about 30 seconds, between about 30 seconds and about 1 minute, between about 30 seconds and about 5 minutes, between about 30 seconds and about 10 minutes, between about 30 seconds and about 15 minutes, between about 30 seconds and about 30 minutes, and between about 30 seconds and about 45 minutes.

51. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 49, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume of between about 6 percent and about 70 percent.

52. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 51, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume is selected from the group consisting of:

an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 6 percent and about 10 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of greater than about 6 percent but less than an amount which generates the azeotrope of the mixture, an amount of diacetone alcohol greater than an amount which generates the azeotrope of the mixture but less than about 15 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol which generates the azeotrope of the mixture, an amount of diacetone alcohol of about 10 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of about 12 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 10 percent and about 12 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 10 percent and about 15 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of about 15 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 15 percent and about 20 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of about 20 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 15 percent and about 25 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 20 percent and about 30 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 25 percent and about 35 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 30 percent and about 40 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 35 percent and about 45 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 40 percent and about 50 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 45 percent and about 55 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 50 percent and about 60 percent, an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 55 percent and about 65 percent, and an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 60 percent and about 70 percent.

53. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 49, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 10 percent and about 20 percent, and wherein the resulting mixture provides a complete reduction in a population of microorganisms in a duration of time of between about 30 seconds and about 5 minutes.

54. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 49, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 20 percent and about 40 percent, and wherein the resulting mixture provides a complete reduction in a population of microorganisms in a duration of time of between about 30 seconds and about 5 minutes.

55. The antimicrobial composition as described in claim 49, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol mixed with said amount of water volume to volume comprises an amount of diacetone alcohol of between about 20 percent and about 90 percent, and further comprising an amount of diluent mixed with said amount of diacetone alcohol and said amount of water, and wherein the resulting mixture has a concentration of not less than about 10 percent diacetone alcohol which provides a complete reduction in a population of microorganisms in a duration of time of between about 30 seconds and about 5 minutes.

56. A method of reducing a population of viable microorganisms, comprising the steps of:

a. providing an amount of water;

b. providing an amount of diacetone alcohol;

c. generating a mixture of said amount of diacetone alcohol and said amount of water, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol is between about 6 percent and about 90 percent volume to volume;

d. applying said mixture of diacetone alcohol and said amount of water to said population of microorganisms; and

e. reducing said population of viable microorganisms over a duration of time of between about 30 seconds and about 10 minutes.

57. The method of reducing a population of viable microorganisms as described in claim 56, further comprising the step of diluting said mixture of said amount of diacetone alcohol and said amount of water with an amount of diluent, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol is not less than 6 percent volume to volume.

58. The method of reducing a population of viable microorganisms as described in claim 57, wherein said amount of diluent contains said population of viable microorganisms.

59. The method of reducing a population of viable microorganisms as described in claim 57, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol is between about 10 percent and about 40 percent volume to volume, and wherein step of reducing said population of viable microorganisms over a duration of time of between about 30 seconds and about 10 minutes comprises the step of reducing said population of viable microorganisms to zero over a duration of time between about 30 seconds and about 10 minutes.

60. The method of reducing a population of viable microorganisms as described in claim 58, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol is between about 6 percent and about 40 percent volume to volume, and wherein step of reducing said population of viable microorganisms over a duration of time of between about 30 seconds and about 10 minutes comprises the step of reducing said population of viable microorganisms to nearly zero over a duration of time between about 30 seconds and about 10 minutes.

61. The method of reducing a population of viable microorganisms as described in claim 58, wherein said amount of diacetone alcohol is between about 6 percent and about 40 percent volume to volume, and wherein step of reducing said population of viable microorganisms over a duration of time of between about 30 seconds and about 10 minutes comprises the step of significantly reducing said population of viable microorganisms over a duration of time between about 30 seconds and about 10 minutes.
