Abstract

Methods and apparatus for forming one or more trans-sacral axial instrumentation/fusion (TASIF) axial bore through vertebral bodies in general alignment with a visualized, anterior or posterior axial instrumentation/fusion line (AAIFL or PAIFL) in a minimally invasive, low trauma, manner and providing a therapy to the spine employing the axial bore. Anterior or posterior starting positions aligned with the AAIFL or PAIFL are accessed through respective anterior and posterior tracts. Curved or relatively straight anterior and curved posterior TASIF axial bores are formed from the anterior and posterior starting positions. The therapies performed through the TASIF axial bores include discoscopy, full and partial discectomy, vertebroplasty, balloon-assisted vertebroplasty, drug delivery, electrical stimulation and various forms of spinal disc cavity augmentation, spinal disc replacement, fusion of spinal motion segments and implantation of radioactive seeds. Axial spinal implants and bone growth materials can be placed into single or multiple parallel or diverging TASIF axial bores to fuse two or more vertebrae, or distract or shock absorb two or more vertebrae.

Claims

1. A spinal fusion kit, comprising:

an access tool, for providing access to a disc space;

a cutter, for disrupting material in the disc space;

a tissue extraction tool, for removing disrupted material from the disc space; and

a fusion rod, for spanning the disc space and enabling fusion of adjacent vertebral bodies across the space.

2. The spinal fusion kit as in claim 1, further comprising a bone growth material inserter.

3. The spinal fusion kit as in claim 1, further comprising a bone paste inserter.

4. The spinal fusion kit of claim 1 wherein the cutter comprises at least one single-sided cutter blade arm.

5. The spinal fusion kit of claim 1 wherein the cutter comprises at least one double-sided cutter blade arm.

6. The spinal fusion kit of claim 1 wherein the cutter comprises a shaft, a handle and a blade, the shaft extending between a shaft proximal end and a shaft distal end, the handle extending proximate the shaft proximal end, the blade comprising a distal segment and a proximal segment forming a closed loop, the blade actuatable between an extended configuration and a retracted configuration by the relative movement between the distal segment and the proximal segment of the blade.

7. The spinal fusion kit of claim 6 wherein the blade comprises a teardrop shape.

8. The spinal fusion kit of claim 6, wherein the distal segment comprises a first attachment structure secured proximate the shaft distal end and the proximal segment comprises a second attachment structure secured proximate the shaft distal end.

9. The spinal fusion kit of claim 8 wherein one of the first and the second attachment structures comprises a slot and the other of the first and the second attachment structures comprises a hole.

10. The spinal fusion kit of claim 8 wherein the first attachment structure and the second attachment structure are secured to the shaft distal end with a pin.

11. The spinal fusion kit of claim 6 wherein axial movement of the handle along a longitudinal axis of the shaft actuates the blade between the extended configuration and a retracted configuration.

12. The spinal fusion kit of claim 6 wherein the blade comprises an up-cutter.

13. The spinal fusion kit of claim 6 wherein the blade comprises a down-cutter.

14. The spinal fusion kit of claim 6 wherein the blade comprises a debulker.

15. The spinal fusion kit of claim 6 wherein the cutter further comprises a shaft slot dimensioned to accommodate the blade.

16. The spinal fusion kit of claim 6 wherein the cutter further comprises a shaft slot dimensioned to accommodate at least a portion of the proximal segment of the blade.

17. The spinal fusion kit of claim 6 wherein the blade comprises a shape memory alloy.
