Abstract

A prosthesis for repairing a hernia includes an adhesion-resistant biodegradable region and an opposing tissue-ingrowth biodegradable region. When the prosthesis is implanted into the patient, the adhesion-resistant biodegradable region covers a fascial defect of the hernia, and the tissue-ingrowth biodegradable region is located above the adhesion-resistant biodegradable region while being exposed substantially only to the host'"'"'s subcutaneous tissue layer. This orientation allows the tissue-ingrowth biodegradable region to become firmly incorporated with the host'"'"'s body tissue. The adhesion-resistant biodegradable region faces the internal organs and decreases the incidence of adhesions and/or bowel obstruction.

Claims

1. A composite prosthesis, comprising:

a coated mesh having at least one opening through a first surface and a second surface of the coated mesh;

the coated mesh comprising a mesh and a biocompatible coating substantially covering the mesh; and

a barrier material comprising a biocompatible membrane constructed and arranged to cover at least one surface of the coated mesh.

2. The composite prosthesis according to claim 1, wherein the mesh comprises a knitted mesh and the barrier material is attached to at least one surface of the coated mesh.

3. The composite prosthesis according to claim 2, wherein the barrier material is attached to the coated mesh by the biocompatible coating.

4. The composite prosthesis according to claim 1, wherein the barrier material is a bioabsorbable material.

5. The composite prosthesis according to claim 1, wherein the barrier material comprises a poly lactide polymer or co-polymer.

6. The composite prosthesis according to claim 1, wherein the biocompatible coating is a hydratable polymer.

7. A method for limiting the incidence of postoperative adhesions arising from a repair of a defect in a tissue, wherein the tissue defect is located near a region of potential postoperative adhesion, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a composite prosthesis comprising;

a coated mesh having at least one opening through a first surface and a second surface of the coated mesh;

the coated mesh comprising a mesh and a biocompatible coating substantially covering the mesh; and

a barrier material comprising a biocompatible membrane constructed and arranged to cover at least one surface of the coated mesh and to isolate the repaired defect; and

positioning the composite prosthesis to cover the defect whereby the formation of postoperative adhesions is limited.

8. The method recited in claim 7, wherein the step of positioning the composite prosthesis further comprises positioning the composite prosthesis with the coated mesh away from the defect and the barrier material positioned between defect and the coated mesh whereby the formation of postoperative adhesions is limited.

9. The method recited in claim 7, wherein the mesh comprises a knitted mesh and the barrier material is attached to at least one surface of the coated mesh.

10. The method recited in claim 7, wherein the barrier material is attached to the coated mesh by the biologically compatible coating.

11. The method recited in claim 7, wherein the barrier material comprises a poly lactide polymer or co-polymer.

12. The method recited in claim 7, wherein the repair is to soft tissues in the body cavities of a mammal.

13. A method of making a composite prosthesis comprising the steps of:

coating a mesh with a biocompatible coating to form a coated mesh having at least one opening; and

attaching an adhesion-resistant barrier material to the coated mesh.

14. The method recited in claim 13, wherein the step of coating a mesh comprises coating the mesh with a biocompatible coating to form a coated mesh having at least one opening through the coated mesh.

15. The method recited in claim 13, wherein the step of attaching the barrier material comprises gluing the barrier material to the coated mesh.

16. The method recited in claim 13, wherein the step of attaching the barrier material comprises applying the barrier material before the coating applied to the mesh has cured.
