Abstract

A mail sorting device and method (FIG. 1) comprising a reader (20, 24), a plurality of holders (28) for receiving mail in a generally vertical orientation, and a sorter (26), wherein mail pieces held by said holders are sorted according to sequence into interim unloading stations and then wrapped and encoded with the respective delivery address.

Claims

1. A sorting system for a group of mail pieces where the mail pieces in the group each have two faces, the sorting system for sorting the group of mail pieces into a sequence having unique destinations according to delivery information thereon, comprising:

reader means for retrieving delivery information associated with each mail piece from the mail piece;

a plurality of holders, each holder dimensioned for receipt of one mail piece with its faces in a generally vertical orientation;

means for placing each mail piece from the group of mail pieces in a specific one of said plurality of holders;

means for creating an association between the retrieved delivery information of each mail piece with its specific holder; and

a sorter for moving the holders so that mail pieces are at least temporarily positioned face to face to each other in a generally vertical orientation and for moving the holders based upon the association of each holder with the retrieved delivery information of the mail piece held thereby, so that the mail pieces held by said holders are sorted according to the sequence.

2. The sorting system according to claim 1, wherein the sorter includes means for determining a correct order for unloading the mail pieces to the desired delivery sequence once delivery information associated with the mail pieces in the group is retrieved.

3. The sorting system according to claim 2, further including a plurality of interim unloading stations past which the plurality of holders move as the mail pieces deposited in said holders are sorted according to the desired delivery sequence into the interim unloading stations.

4. The sorting system according to claim 3, wherein the sorter includes means for sorting the mail pieces held by said holders into the interim unloading stations according to the desired delivery sequence.

5. The sorting system according to claim 3, wherein the desired delivery sequence includes a series of delivery addresses, and further including means for associating each of the interim unloading stations with a designated address in the series of delivery addresses.

The sorting system according to claim 5, wherein there are fewer interim unloading stations than delivery addresses in the series of delivery addresses, and the associating means is adapted to associate successive portions of the delivery addresses according to the desired delivery sequence to the interim unloading stations.

The sorting system according to claim 6, further including means to periodically unload the interim unloading stations when all the mail pieces from the group associated with each successive portion of the delivery addresses are sorted into the desired delivery sequence into the interim unloading stations.

8. The sorting system according to claim 7, further including means for segregating the mail pieces in the interim unloading stations into batches according to each delivery address in the series of delivery addresses.

9. The sorting system according to claim 8, wherein the segregating means bundles each of the batches.

10. The sorting system according to claim 8, wherein the segregating means includes:

wrapping means for wrapping each of the batches with a separate wrapper; and

printing means for printing delivery information on each wrapper.

11. The sorting system according to claim 10, wherein the delivery information indicates if there are any mail pieces external to the wrapper that need to be delivered to the respective delivery address.

12. The sorting system according to claim 10, wherein the delivery information indicates how many mail pieces external to the wrapper need to be delivered to the respective delivery address.

The sorting system according to claim 5, wherein each interim unloading station has a maximum capacity for receipt of mail pieces and wherein the sorting system further comprises means for determining if the mail pieces for a particular delivery address is greater than said capacity and assigning an additional interim unloading station for said particular delivery address.

14. The sorting system according to claim 5, wherein the holders are moveably positioned relative to the interim unloading stations so that more than one holder can interact with more than one interim unloading station simultaneously.

15. The sorting system according to claim 1, wherein the mail pieces are held in close proximity to each other when the mail pieces are positioned face to face.

16. A sorting system for a group of items where each item in the group has two faces, the sorting system for sorting the items according to a sequence having a plurality of unique destinations, comprising:

means for retrieving information associated with each item of said group of items;

a plurality of holders, each holder dimensioned for receipt of an item with its faces in a generally vertical orientation, each holder being identifiable;

means for placing each item of said group of items with a specific holder of said plurality of holders;

means for associating the retrieved information of said item with said specific holder;

a plurality of interim unloading stations, where an interim unloading station is at least temporarily associated with one of the unique destinations, where the holders are moveably positioned relative to the interim unloading stations so that each of the holders can interact with each of the interim unloading stations; and

a sorter for moving the holders so that items in said holders are at least temporarily positioned face to face to each other in a generally vertical orientation and for moving the holders relative to the interim unloading stations so as to be able to interact therewith and cause an item in the holder to be moved to a specific interim unloading station if the information associated with the item corresponds to the temporary unique destination associated with the interim unloading station;

whereby the items held by said holders are sorted according to said sequence.

17. The sorting system according to claim 16, further including means to periodically unload the interim unloading stations when all the items from the group associated with the unique destinations are sorted into the sequence into the interim unloading stations.

18. The sorting system according to claim 16, further including means for segregating the items in the interim unloading stations into batches according to each unique destination in the sequence.

19. The sorting system according to claim 18, wherein the segregating means bundles each of the batches.

20. The sorting system according to claim 16, wherein each interim unloading station has a maximum capacity for receipt of items and wherein the sorting system further comprises means for determining if the items for a particular unique destination is greater than said capacity and assigning an additional interim unloading station for said particular unique designation.

21. The sorting system according to claim 16, wherein the holders are moveably positioned relative to the interim unloading stations so that more than one holder can interact with more than one interim unloading station simultaneously.

22. The sorting system according to claim 16, wherein the items are held in close proximity to each other when the mail pieces are positioned face to face.

23. The sorting system according to claim 16, wherein the items are mail pieces.

24. A sorting method for a group of mail pieces where the mail pieces in the group each have two faces, the sorting method for sorting the group of mail pieces into a sequence having unique destinations according to delivery information thereon, comprising the steps of:

retrieving delivery information associated with each mail piece from the mail piece;

providing a plurality of holders, each holder dimensioned for receipt of one mail piece with its faces in a generally vertical orientation;

placing each mail piece from the group of mail pieces in a specific one of said plurality of holders;

creating an association between the retrieved delivery information of each mail piece with its specific holder; and

moving the holders so that mail pieces therein are at least temporarily positioned face to face to each other in a generally vertical orientation and moving the holders based upon the association of each holder with the retrieved delivery information of the mail piece held thereby, so that the mail pieces held by said holders are sorted according to the sequence.

25. The sorting method according to claim 24, further including the step of determining a correct order for unloading the mail pieces to the desired delivery sequence once delivery information associated with the mail pieces in the group is retrieved.

The sorting method according to claim 25, further including the step of providing a plurality of interim unloading stations past which the plurality of holders move as the mail pieces deposited in said holders are sorted according to the desired delivery sequence into the interim unloading stations.

27. The sorting method according to claim 26, wherein the moving step includes sorting the mail pieces held by said holders into the interim unloading stations according to the desired delivery sequence.

28. The sorting method according to claim 26, wherein the desired delivery sequence includes a series of delivery addresses, and further including the step of associating each of the interim unloading stations with a designated address in the series of delivery addresses.

29. The sorting method according to claim 28, wherein there are fewer interim unloading stations than delivery addresses in the series of delivery addresses, and the associating step associates successive portions of the delivery addresses according to the desired delivery sequence to the interim unloading stations.

30. The sorting method according to claim 29, further including the step of periodically unloading the interim unloading stations when all the mail pieces from the group associated with each successive portion of the delivery addresses are sorted into the desired delivery sequence into the interim unloading stations.

31. The sorting method according to claim 29, further including the step of segregating the mail pieces in the interim unloading stations into batches according to each delivery address in the series of delivery addresses.

32. The sorting method according to claim 31, wherein, during the segregating step, each of the batches is bundled.

33. The sorting method according to claim 31, wherein the segregating step includes:

wrapping each of the batches with a separate wrapper; and

printing means for printing delivery information on each wrappers.

34. The sorting method according to claim 33, wherein the delivery information indicates if there are any mail pieces external to the wrapper that need to be delivered to the respective delivery address.

35. The sorting method according to claim 33, wherein the delivery information indicates how many mail pieces external to the wrapper need to be delivered to the respective delivery address.

36. The sorting method according to claim 28, wherein each interim unloading station has a maximum capacity for receipt of mail pieces and further comprising the steps of determining if the mail pieces for a particular delivery address is greater than said capacity and assigning an additional interim unloading station for said particular delivery address.

37. The sorting method according to claim 28, wherein the holders are moveably positioned relative to the interim unloading stations so that more than one holder can interact with more than one interim unloading station simultaneously.

38. The sorting method according to claim 24, wherein the mail pieces are held in close proximity to each other when the mail pieces are positioned face to face.
