Abstract

A method of updating an IP address of an idle mode mobile subscriber station in an IP based broadband wireless access system and method of transmitting information for updating the IP address are disclosed. In updating an IP address of a mobile subscriber moving away into a second base station area from a first base station area in a broadband wireless access system, the present invention includes the steps of in the first base station area, entering an idle mode, in the second base station area, receiving information about an IP address update in the idle mode, and according to the received information, changing or retaining an IP address.

Claims

1. In updating an IP address of a mobile subscriber in a broadband wireless access system having at least two base stations belonging to different networks and a same paging group, an IP address updating method comprising the steps of:

from a base station, receiving a message including information indicating that a specific mobile subscriber station enters an idle mode and an identifier indicating a network to which the mobile subscriber station belongs;

from the base station, transmitting a message indicating an identifier of the mobile subscriber station and information that the mobile subscriber station needs to update the IP address; and

updating the IP address of the mobile subscriber station.

2. The IP address updating method of claim 1, wherein the received message is a paging announce (Paging-announce) message.

3. The IP address updating method of claim 2, wherein the identifier indicating the network to which the mobile subscriber station belongs is a network identifier (Net ID).

4. The IP address updating method of claim 3, wherein the network identifier is the identifier indicating a subnet to which the mobile subscriber station belongs.

5. The IP address updating method of claim 3, wherein the network identifier is the identifier indicating a foreign agent to which the mobile subscriber station belongs.

6. The IP address updating method of claim 2, wherein the paging announce (Paging-announce) message is the message transmitted from a paging controller.

7. The IP address updating method of claim 2, wherein the paging announce (Paging-announce) message is the message transmitted from the base station approving that the mobile subscriber station can enter the idle mode.

8. The IP address updating method of claim 1, wherein the transmitted message is a paging advertisement message.

9. The IP address updating method of claim 8, wherein the paging advertisement message is periodically transmitted.

10. The IP address updating method of claim 1, further comprising the step of performing a ranging procedure between the mobile subscriber station and the base station.

11. In updating an IP address of a mobile subscriber moving away into a second base station area from a first base station area in a broadband wireless access system, an IP address updating method comprising the steps of:

in the first base station area, entering an idle mode;

in the second base station area, receiving information about an IP address update in the idle mode; and

according to the received information, changing or retaining an IP address.

12. The IP address updating method of claim 11, wherein the information about the IP address update is periodically received.

13. The IP address updating method of claim 12, wherein the first and second base stations belong to a same paging zone and wherein the information about the address update is received via a paging advertisement message.

14. The IP address updating method of claim 13, wherein the paging advertisement message includes information required for a control of an idle mode mobile subscriber station.

15. The IF address updating method of claim 14, wherein the information required for the control of the idle mode mobile subscriber station is the information transmitted to the base stations belonging to the paging zone from a paging controller.

16. The IP address updating method of claim 11, wherein if the second base station belongs to a subnet or foreign agent different from that of the first base station, the mobile subscriber station changes the IP address according to the received information.

17. The IP address updating method of claim 11, wherein the IP address update is initiated by performing ranging for a location update based on the information about the IP address update.

18. The IP address updating method of claim 11, wherein the base station lies within a same paging zone.

19. In a broadband wireless access system, a method of transmitting IP address update information, comprising the steps of:

receiving an identifier of a mobile subscriber station entering an idle mode and network information to which the mobile subscriber station belongs; and

periodically transmitting information indicating whether to update an IP address in response to the received information.

20. The IP address updating method of claim 19, wherein the identifier of the mobile subscriber station and the network information are received from a network controller.

21. The IP address updating method of claim 19, wherein the identifier of the mobile subscriber station and the network information are received via a paging announce message.

22. The IP address updating method of claim 19, wherein if it is decided that the base station belongs to a different subnet or a different foreign agent as result of receiving the network information, information indicating that an IP address update is required is periodically transmitted.

23. The IP address updating method of claim 19, wherein the information indicating whether to update the IP address is transmitted via paging advertisement message.
