Abstract

Consumer configurable mobile communications solution enabling policy-enforcement services allowing authorized users to define, manage and enforce restrictions for voice, data, and mobile Web services of a secondary mobile device.

Claims

1. A consumer configurable mobile communications system comprising:

a patrol module adapted to receive configuration information from a primary user, store the configuration information in a patrol database, and forward configuration data based on the configuration information received from the primary user upon updates to said configuration information, said configuration information and data defining rules for restricting communications by one or more secondary users over a mobile telecommunications network, and said patrol module including a provisioning module interconnected with a home location register of said mobile telecommunications network, said provisioning module adapted to provide said configuration data to said home location register;

a control module associated with said mobile telecommunications network and interconnected with the patrol module, said control module adapted to receive and to store said configuration data forwarded by said patrol module, said control module including a service control point that applies said stored configuration data to manage network traffic to and from said secondary users according to said rules; and

a media module in communication with said provisioning module, said media module adapted to provide notices to a primary user according to one or more notice mechanisms predefined by said primary user, wherein the provisioning module forwards notices describing attempted network traffic of said secondary users that violates said rules.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the patrol module further comprises:

a web server for presenting an interface for the primary user, said primary user utilizing said interface to define, review and modify the configuration information; and

an applications server interconnected with the web server for managing the configuration information stored in said patrol database.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein said patrol database is further adapted to store records of network traffic of said secondary users.

4. The system of claim 2, wherein said interface enables said primary user to activate an unrestricted setting for a given secondary user that temporarily disables rules that pertain to said given secondary user.

5. The system of claim 2, wherein said rules can comprise usage time restrictions over a given period, and wherein said interface enables said primary user to define roll over settings for said secondary users.

6. The system of claim 2, wherein said secondary users can access said interface in a read only mode to view content of said patrol database.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the patrol module further comprises a service management module for generating configuration data based on the configuration information and for interconnecting with the control module and forwarding the configuration data to the control module.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein said secondary users are permitted to define and submit contacts to said primary user for consideration in defining new rules, and wherein said contacts are associated with a project code by the submitting secondary users.

9. A method for configuring and controlling the use of mobile communications device operable over a mobile telecommunications network, said method comprising:

presenting a patrol system having a patrol module, a control module associated with said mobile telecommunications network and in communication with said patrol module, and a media module in communication with said patrol module, said patrol module having a user interface accessible by a primary user for defining configuration information, said configuration information defining rules for restricting communications by one or more secondary users over said mobile telecommunications network;

receiving configuration information and a definition of one or more notice mechanisms from said primary user via said interface;

storing the configuration information in a patrol database of said patrol module;

creating configuration data based on the configuration information whenever updates to said configuration information are made, said configuration data defining rules readable by said control module for restricting communications by one or more secondary users over the mobile telecommunications network;

communicating said configuration data to said control module;

storing said configuration data at said control module;

communicating said configuration data via said provisioning module to a home location register of said mobile telecommunications network;

applying said stored configuration data with a service control point of said control module to manage network traffic to and from said secondary users according to said rules; and

providing a notice to said primary user according to said notice mechanisms, said notice describing attempted network traffic of said secondary users that violates said rules.

10. The method according to claim 9, further comprising:

receiving a permission request for a specified contact from a given secondary user;

checking for an unrestricted configuration;

checking for the contact'"'"'s inclusion in a white list;

checking for the contact'"'"'s inclusion in a black list;

checking the time of the permission request to be within a valid time period; and

checking that a minimum quota threshold is met.

The method of claim 10, wherein said contact is automatically accepted by said patrol module if an unrestricted configuration applies to said given secondary user or if said contact is included in a white list defined by said primary user, and said contact is automatically rejected by said patrol module if said contact is included in a black list defined by said primary user.

12. The method of claim 9, further comprising activating an unrestricted setting for a given secondary user that temporarily disables rules that pertain to said given secondary user.

13. The method of claim 9, further comprising storing in said patrol database records of network traffic of said secondary users, said records indicating attempted violations of said rules by each of said secondary users.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein said rules can comprise usage time restrictions over a given period, and said method further comprises receiving via said interface from said primary user roll over settings for said secondary users.

15. The method of claim 9, further comprising displaying via said interface said configuration information to said secondary users in a read only mode.
