Abstract

A wearable infusion device delivers a liquid medicant to a patient. The infusion device comprises a reservoir arranged to contain a liquid medicant to be delivered beneath a patient'"'"'s skin. The reservoir has an outlet through which the medicant flows and a shape that forms at least one pocket that traps air isolated from the outlet. The infusion device further includes a conduit communicating with the outlet of the reservoir, and a pump that causes the medicant to flow from the reservoir into the conduit.

Claims

1. A wearable infusion device comprising:

a reservoir arranged to contain a liquid medicant to be delivered beneath a patient'"'"'s skin, the reservoir having an outlet through which the medicant flows and a shape that forms at least one pocket that traps air isolated from the outlet;

a conduit communicating with the outlet of the reservoir; and

a pump that causes the medicant to flow from the reservoir into the conduit.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the reservoir shape includes at least one raised region forming the at least one pocket.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the raised region comprises a pointed region.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the pointed region includes concave side walls.

5. The device of claim 2, wherein the reservoir is formed of flexible sheet material having a seal line, and wherein the raised region is along the seal line.

6. The device of claim 2, wherein the reservoir shape includes a plurality of the raised regions.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein each raised region comprises a pointed region.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein each pointed region includes concave side walls.

9. The device of claim 6, wherein the reservoir is formed of flexible sheet material having a seal line, and wherein the raised regions are along the seal line.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the reservoir shape includes at least a first raised region along a first side and at least a second raised region along a second side opposite the first side, one of the first and second raised regions forming a pocket that traps air when the reservoir is disposed to place the first and second sides in a plane having a vertical component.

11. The device of claim 10, wherein each raised region comprises a pointed region.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein each pointed region includes concave side walls.

13. The device of claim 10, wherein the reservoir shape includes a plurality of the raised regions along the first side and a plurality of raised regions along the second side, the raised regions along one of the first and second sides forming pockets that trap air when the reservoir is disposed to place the first and second sides in a plane having a vertical component.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein each raised region comprises a pointed region.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein each pointed region includes concave side walls.

16. The device of claim 13, wherein the reservoir is formed of flexible sheet material having a seal line, and wherein the raised regions are along the seal line.

17. A wearable infusion device comprising:

a reservoir arranged to contain a liquid medicant to be delivered beneath a patient'"'"'s skin, the reservoir formed of flexible sheet material joined along a seal line, having an outlet through which the medicant flows and a shape that forms a plurality pockets that trap air isolated from the outlet, the shape including a plurality of raised regions along the seal line to form the pockets;

a conduit communicating with the outlet of the reservoir; and

a pump that causes the medicant to flow from the reservoir into the conduit.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein the raised regions are along a common side of the reservoir.

19. The device of claim 17, wherein each raised region comprises a pointed region.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein each pointed region includes concave side walls.

21. A wearable infusion device comprising:

a reservoir arranged to contain a liquid medicant to be delivered beneath a patient'"'"'s skin, the reservoir being flexible and comprising first and second sheets of flexible material sealed together along a seal line, the reservoir having an outlet through which the medicant flows;

a conduit communicating with the outlet of the reservoir; and

a pump that causes the medicant to flow from the reservoir into the conduit.
