A color liquid crystal display apparatus including a transmissive color liquid crystal display panel, having a color filter made up of three prime color filters for wavelength selecting and transmitting red light, green light and blue light, and a backlight device for illuminating said color liquid crystal display panel with white light from a backside thereof, wherein said backlight device includesa main white light source having a three wavelength phosphorescent lamp emitting light with three or more wavelengths, and an auxiliary light source having at least one of a red light emitting diode, a green light emitting diode and a blue light emitting diode, said red light emitting diode emitting red light with a peak wavelength λ
