Abstract

A rotatable operating head for removal of obstructive material from a target site in a body lumen or cavity is operably connected to a rotatable, translatable drive shaft, that is driven by a drive motor and received through an elongated catheter. The operating head includes a plurality of differential cutting blades, with at least one of the cutting blades being a stepped blade, the stepped blade comprising a raised cutting surface positioned adjacent, or in proximity to, a shoulder region.

Claims

1. A rotatable operating head for removal of obstructive material from a target site in a body lumen or cavity comprising a plurality of differential cutting blades, wherein at least one of the blades is a stepped blade.

2. The operating head of claim 1, wherein the operating head is operably connected to a rotatable, translatable drive shaft, the drive shaft being driven by a drive motor and received through an elongated catheter.

3. The operating head of claim 1, wherein the stepped blade comprises a raised cutting surface located in proximity to a shoulder region.

4. The operating head of claim 3, wherein the raised cutting surface has a height of about 0.0005 inch to 0.010 inch.

5. The operating head of claim 3, wherein the raised cutting surface has a height of about 0.001 inch to 0.003 inch.

6. The operating head of claim 3, wherein the shoulder region has a width that is greater than a height of the raised cutting surface.

7. The operating head of claim 6, wherein the ratio of the width of the shoulder portion to the height of the raised cutting surface is more than 2:

8. The operating head of claim 3, wherein the stepped blade additionally comprises a chamfered edge provided adjacent to an edge of the shoulder region opposite to the raised cutting surface.

9. The operating head of claim 3, wherein the raised cutting surface has a cant angle between about 80°

and 110°

10. The operating head of claim 3, wherein raised cutting surface and the shoulder portion connect to form an angle between about 45°

and 150°

.

11. The operating head of claim 3, wherein the raised cutting surface has a curved outer profile.

12. The operating head of claim 11, wherein the raised cutting surface has a generally fan-shaped outer profile.

13. An interventional catheter assembly for removal of obstructive material from a body lumen or cavity, comprising an operating head operably connected to a rotatable, translatable drive shaft, the drive shaft being driven by a drive motor and received through an elongated catheter, wherein the operating head comprises:

(a) a distal cutter assembly having a plurality of differential cutting blades arranged in a radially symmetrical configuration with a cant angle of less than 80°

; and

(b) a proximal cutter assembly having a plurality of differential cutting blades arranged in a radially symmetrical configuration with a cant angle of greater than 80°

.

14. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 13, wherein the distal cutter assembly has fixed blades.

15. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 13, wherein the distal cutter assembly has four fixed blades and is not provided with ports communicating with an interior of the assembly.

16. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 13, wherein the proximal cutter assembly has adjustable blades.

17. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 13, wherein the distal cutter assembly and the proximal cutter assembly have different cutter profiles.

18. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 13, wherein the cutting blades of the distal cutter assembly and the cutting blades of the proximal cutter assembly are oriented for operating in different directions of rotation.

19. An interventional catheter assembly for removal of obstructive material from a body lumen or cavity comprising an operating head operably connected to a rotatable, translatable drive shaft, the drive shaft being driven by a drive motor and received through an elongated catheter, wherein the operating head comprises a cutter assembly having a plurality of differential cutting blades arranged in a radially symmetrical configuration with a plurality of aspiration ports provided between at least some of the cutting blades, the aspiration ports being generally oval and provided at the proximal end of the cutter assembly.

20. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 19, wherein the aspiration ports communicate with a sealed lumen that is connected to a vacuum system for removal of aspirate fluid and obstructive material.

An interventional catheter assembly for removal of obstructive material from a body lumen or cavity, comprising an operating head operably connected to a rotatable, translatable drive shaft, the drive shaft being driven by a drive motor and received through an elongated catheter, wherein the operating head comprises at least one stepped cutter blade having a blade surface in proximity to a shoulder region.

22. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 21, wherein the blade surface has a height of about 0.0005 inch to 0.010 inch.

23. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 21, wherein the blade surface has a height of about 0.001 inch to 0.003 inch.

24. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 21, wherein the shoulder region has a width that is greater than a height of the raised cutting surface.

25. The interventional catheter assembly of claim 24, wherein the ratio of the width of the shoulder portion to the height of the raised cutting surface is more than 2:

1 and less than 5;
