Abstract

In one embodiment a method for managing event messages includes predicting an event message arrival rate, determining a current capacity of an event message repository in which received event messages are stored, and calculating a time at which to perform event message deletion relative to the predicted event message arrival rate and the determined current capacity of the event message repository.

Claims

1. A method for managing event messages, the method comprising:

predicting an event message arrival rate;

determining a current capacity of an event message repository in which received event messages are stored; and

calculating a time at which to perform event message deletion relative to the predicted event message arrival rate and the determined current capacity of the event message repository.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein predicting an event message arrival rate comprises determining a previous message arrival rate from historical data pertaining to previous arrival of event messages.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein predicting an event message arrival rate further comprises determining a number of event messages that arrived over a given period of time.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein predicting an event message arrival rate further comprises determining an amount of data that was stored in the event message repository over a given period of time.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein predicting an event message arrival rate comprises computing multiple event message arrival rates for discrete periods of time.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein computing multiple event message arrival rates comprises computing separate event message arrival rates for different days of the week.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein computing multiple event message arrival rates comprises computing separate event message arrival rates for different times of day.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein determining a current capacity of an event message repository comprises determining a number of messages currently stored in the event message repository.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein determining a current capacity of an event message repository comprises determining an amount of data currently stored in the event message repository.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising deleting event messages from the event message repository at the determined time.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising determining a new current capacity of the event message repository after event messages were deleted and recalculating the time at which to perform message deletion relative to the predicted event message arrival rate and the new current capacity.

12. A system for managing event messages, the system comprising:

means for predicting an event message arrival rate based upon historical data concerning past arrival of event messages;

means for determining a current capacity of an event message repository in which received event messages are stored;

means for calculating a time at which to perform event message deletion relative to the predicted event message arrival rate and the determined current capacity of the event message repository; and

means for deleting event messages from the event message repository at the determined time.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the means for predicting an event message arrival rate comprise means for determining a number of event messages that arrived over a given period of time.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein the means for predicting an event message arrival rate comprise means for determining an amount of data that was stored in the event message repository over a given period of time.

15. The system of claim 12, wherein the means for predicting an event message arrival rate comprise means for calculating multiple event message arrival rates for discrete periods of time.

16. The system of claim 12, wherein the means for determining a current capacity of an event message repository comprise means for determining a number of messages currently stored in the event message repository.

17. The system of claim 12, wherein the means for determining a current capacity of an event message repository comprise means for determining an amount of data currently stored in the event message repository.

18. A computer-readable medium that stores a system for managing event messages, the system comprising:

logic configured to predict a future event message arrival rate;

logic configured to determine a current capacity of an event message repository in which received event messages are stored; and

logic configured to calculate a time at which to delete event messages from the event message repository relative to the predicted event message arrival rate and the determined current capacity of the event message repository.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the logic configured to predict an event message arrival rate comprises logic configured to determine a previous message arrival rate from historical data pertaining to previous arrival of event messages.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the logic configured to predict an event message arrival rate further comprises logic configured to determine a number of event messages that arrived over a given period of time.

21. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the logic configured to predict an event message arrival rate further comprises logic configured to determine an amount of data that was stored in the event message repository over a given period of time.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the logic configured to predict an event message arrival rate comprises logic configured to calculate multiple event message arrival rates for discrete periods of time.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the logic configured to determine a current capacity of an event message repository comprises logic configured to determine a number of messages currently stored in the event message repository.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the logic configured to determine a current capacity of an event message repository comprises logic configured to determine an amount of data currently stored in the event message repository.

25. The computer-readable medium of claim 18, further comprising logic configured to delete event messages from the event message repository at the determined time.

26. A computer comprising:

a processing device; and

memory including a program configured to predict an event message arrival rate based upon historical data concerning past arrival of event messages, to determine a current capacity of an event message repository in which received event messages are stored, to calculate a time at which to perform event message deletion relative to the predicted event message arrival rate and the determined current capacity of the event message repository, and to delete event messages from the event message repository at the determined time.

27. The computer of claim 26, wherein the program is configured to determine a number of event messages that arrived over a given period of time.

28. The computer of claim 26, wherein the program is configured to determine an amount of data that was stored in the event message repository over a given period of time.

29. The computer of claim 26, wherein the program is configured to calculate multiple event message arrival rates for discrete periods of time.
