Abstract

A surgical stapling device including an independently rotatable tool assembly is disclosed. The tool assembly includes an anvil and a cartridge assembly which are movable in relation to each other between spaced and approximated positions.

Claims

1. A surgical stapling device, comprising:

a handle assembly;

an endoscopic body portion; and

a tool assembly, including;

an anvil;

a staple cartridge assembly including a cartridge having a plurality of surgical staples; and

a dynamic clamping member, the dynamic clamping member having an upper flange for engaging the anvil and a lower flange for engaging a bearing surface of the cartridge assembly, the anvil and cartridge assembly being movable in relation to each other between spaced and approximated positions, the dynamic clamping memer being movable to eject the staples from the cartridge; and

a flexible member attached to the dynamic clamping member movable distally to advance the dynamic clamping member distally through the staple cartridge.

2. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 1, wherein the anvil has a recess and the upper flange is received in the recess.

3. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 1, wherein the cartridge assembly has a recess and the lower flange is received in the recess.

4. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the upper flange and lower flange is arcuate in shape.

5. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 1, wherein the cartridge assembly includes a sled for ejecting the staples from the cartridge, the sled being moved distally by the distal movement of the dynamic clamping member.

6. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 5, wherein the dynamic clamping member engages the anvil and cartridge assembly to maintain a desired tissue gap in the area of the tool assembly adjacent the sled during ejection of the staples.

7. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 6, wherein the anvil is formed as a solid, one-piece member.

8. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 1, wherein the cartridge assembly is pivotably attached to the anvil.

9. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 1, further comprising a sheath positioned about the flexible member to prevent buckling.

10. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 1, wherein the flexible member comprises a rod slidably positioned within the sheath.

11. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 1, wherein the dynamic clamping member includes a recess for receiving a distal end of the flexible member.

12. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 11, wherein the distal end of the flexible member is shaped to conform to the recess.

13. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 1, further comprising a clamp ring positioned around a proximal end of the anvil and a proximal end of the cartridge assembly.

14. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 13, further comprising a sheath positioned about the flexible member, the sheath being connected to the clamp ring.

15. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 1, wherein the lower flange engages the cartridge assembly to pivot the cartridge assembly from the spaced position to the approximated position.

16. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 15, wherein the cartridge assembly includes a cam surface, the lower flange engaging the cam surface.

17. A surgical stapling device, comprising:

a handle assembly;

an endoscopic body portion; and

a tool assembly, including;

an anvil;

a staple cartridge assembly including a cartridge having a plurality of surgical staples; and

a dynamic clamping member having a recess, the dynamic clamping member having an upper flange for engaging the anvil and a lower flange for engaging the cartridge assembly, the anvil and cartridge assembly being movable in relation to each other between spaced and approximated positions, the dynamic clamping member being movable to eject the staples from the cartridge; and

a flexible member attached to the dynamic clamping member and movable distally to advance the dynamic clamping member distally through the staple cartridge, a distal end of the flexible member being shaped to conform to the recess.

18. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 17, further comprising a clamp ring positioned around a proximal end of the anvil and a proximal end of the cartridge assembly.

19. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 18, further comprising a sheath positioned about the flexible member, the sheath being connected to the clamp ring.

20. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 17, wherein the tool assembly is attached to a pivot member so that the tool assembly is mounted for articulation with respect to the endoscopic body portion.

21. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 17, further comprising a rotation collar, the flexible member being rotatable to rotate the tool assembly about the longitudinal axis of the rotation collar.

22. A surgical stapling device, comprising:

a handle assembly;

an endoscopic body portion; and

a tool assembly, including;

a rotation collar;

an anvil;

a staple cartridge assembly including a cartridge having a plurality of surgical staples; and

a dynamic clamping member, the dynamic clamping member having an upper flange for engaging the anvil and a lower flange for engaging a bearing surface of the cartridge assembly, the anvil and cartridge assembly being movable in relation to each other between spaced and approximated positions, the dynamic clamping member being movable to eject the staples from the cartridge; and

a drive member attached to the dynamic clamping member and movable distally to advance the dynamic clamping member distally through the staple cartridge.

23. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 22, wherein the cartridge assembly includes a sled for ejecting the staples from the cartridge, the sled being moved distally by the distal movement of the dynamic clamping member.

24. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 22, wherein the dynamic clamping member engages the anvil and cartridge assembly to maintain a desired tissue gap in the area of the tool assembly adjacent the sled during ejection of the staples.

25. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 22, wherein the cartridge assembly is pivotably attached to the anvil.

26. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 22, wherein the dynamic clamping member includes a recess for receiving a distal end of the flexible member.

27. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 26, wherein the distal end of the flexible member is shaped to conform to the recess.

28. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 22, wherein the lower flange engages the cartridge assembly to pivot the cartridge assembly from the spaced position to the approximated position.

29. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 28, wherein the cartridge assembly includes a cam surface, the lower flange engaging the cam surface.

30. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 22, further comprising a sheath positioned about the flexible member.

31. The surgical tool assembly according to claim 22, wherein the tool assembly is attached to a pivot member so that the tool assembly is mounted for articulation with respect to the endoscopic body portion.

32. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge housing having a plurality of staple retention slots;

a plurality of staples disposed in the retention slots;

a plurality of staple pushers disposed along a longitudinal axis of the cartridge housing, wherein each staple pusher is movable between a first position and a second position, each staple pusher including a first base portion, a second base portion, and a plurality of pusher plates, the first base portion being laterally and longitudinally spaced from the second base portion; and

an actuation sled disposed in the elongate body member and longitudinally translatable therethrough, the actuation sled including at least a first cam wedge and a second cam wedge arranged to engage the first base portion and the second base portion of the pushers, the first cam wedge being laterally and longitudinally spaced apart from the second cam wedge.

33. The staple cartridge of claim 32, wherein longitudinal movement of the actuation sled sequentially engages each of the staple pushers and urges each of the staple pushers in a direction generally transverse to the longitudinal axis.

34. The staple cartridge of claim 32, wherein the cartridge housing includes a longitudinal slot and the actuation sled includes a member adapted to be received by the slot.

35. The staple cartridge of claim 32, wherein the staple pushers include recesses for engagement by the cam wedges.

36. The staple cartridge of claim 32, wherein the sled includes recesses for engagement by the staple pushers.
