Abstract

A method and system evaluate the quality of a contribution in a particular domain made by a user of an online community. The quality of a contribution in a particular domain is assessed by assigning domain specific reputation score to the users of the online community. A domain specific reputation score is assigned to the user on the basis of ratings received from other users for the contribution as well as the relevance of the contribution with reference to the particular domain. Included are a method and system for determining reputation of a first user with respect to a second user. Reputation of the first user with respect to the second user is determined by assigning a second viewer specific reputation score to the first user. Attributes of the second user and quality of contribution made by the first user are determining factor for the second viewer specific reputation score.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method for evaluating the quality of users contribution in a particular domain, the user making contributions across a plurality of online communities, each online community comprising a plurality of users, the method comprising:

(a) obtaining identification information for the user;

(b) obtaining contribution information for the contributions made by the user across the plurality of online communities;

(c) determining a relevance score for the contribution, wherein the relevance score showing the relevance of a contribution to a particular domain; and

,

(d) computing a domain specific reputation score for the user based on the contribution information and the relevance score, wherein the domain specific reputation score determines the quality of the user'"'"'s contribution in a particular domain.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising updating the domain specific reputation score in the event of a new contribution by the user.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of validating a contribution.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying the domain specific reputation score across the plurality of online communities.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of computing a rank of the user in a domain based on the domain specific reputation score.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein the rank in a domain is computed for all users across the plurality of online communities.

7. The method of claim 4 wherein the rank in a domain is computed amongst all users within an online community.

8. The method of claim 4 further comprising pushing promotions of products and services of a domain, to a user based on the computed rank in the domain.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the relevance score for the contribution provided by the user is given by the other users.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the relevance score for the contribution provided by the user is provided by community owner.

11. A computer implemented method for determining a reputation of a first user for a second user, the first user contributing across a plurality of online communities, the method comprising:

(a) obtaining attributes for the second user;

(b) obtaining contribution information for the contributions made by the first user across the plurality of online communities;

(c) determining a relevance score for the contribution based on attributes obtained for the second user, wherein the relevance score showing the relevance of the contribution for the second user; and

,

(d) computing a viewer specific reputation score for the first user based on the contribution information and the relevance score, wherein the viewer specific reputation score determines the reputation of the first user for a second user.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprises the step of publishing the viewer specific reputation score to the second user.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein user attributes are provided by the user as identification information.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein the attribute is information on online communities visited frequently by the second user.

15. A system for evaluating the quality of users contribution in a particular domain, the user making contributions across a plurality of online communities, each online community comprising a plurality of users, the system comprising:

(a) means for obtaining identification information for the user;

(b) means for obtaining contribution information for the contributions made by the user across the plurality of online communities;

(c) means for determining a relevance score for the contribution, wherein the relevance score showing the relevance of a contribution to a particular domain; and

,

(d) means for computing a domain specific reputation score for the user based on the contribution information and the relevance score, wherein the domain specific reputation score determines the quality of the user'"'"'s contribution in a particular domain.

16. A computer program product for use with a computer bases system for evaluating the quality of users contribution in a particular domain, the user making contributions across a plurality of online communities, each online community comprising a plurality of users, the computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having a computer readable program code embodied therein, the computer program code performing:

(a) obtaining identification information for the user;

(b) obtaining contribution information for the contributions made by the user across the plurality of online communities;

(c) determining a relevance score for the contribution, wherein the relevance score showing the relevance of a contribution to a particular domain; and

(d) computing a domain specific reputation score for the user based on the contribution information and the relevance score, wherein the domain specific reputation score determines the quality of the user'"'"'s contribution in a particular domain.
