Abstract

A flexible, multilayer wound dressing with antibacterial and antifungal properties, together with methods for making the dressing. The dressing includes a layer of silver-containing fabric, a layer of absorbent material, and (optionally) a layer of flexible air-permeable and/or water-impermeable material. The dressing can be used for prophylactic and therapeutic care and treatment of skin infections and surface wounds (including surgical incisions), as a packing material, and as a swab for surface cleaning.

Claims

1. A multilayer material for use as a wound dressing, said material comprising:

a first layer, said first layer containing a quantity of silver; and

a second layer adjacent to said first layer, said second layer made of a moisture-absorbing material.

2. The material as recited in claim 1, wherein said first layer contains at least approximately 5 wt. % silver.

3. The material as recited in claim 1, wherein said first layer contains at least approximately 20 wt. % silver.

4. The material as recited in claim 1, wherein said first layer has a specific resistance no greater than approximately 5 Ω

/cm.

5. The material as recited in claim 1, wherein said first layer has a specific resistance no greater than approximately 1Ω

/cm.

6. The material as recited in claim 1, wherein said first layer further comprises a flexible fabric substrate, and wherein said silver is carried by said substrate.

7. The material as recited in claim 1, wherein said first layer further comprises a flexible substrate, and wherein said silver is releasably bound to said substrate.

8. The material as recited in claim 1, wherein said first layer further comprises a flexible substrate, and wherein said silver is loosely bound to said substrate so that, when said first layer is moistened and placed adjacent to a wound, at least a portion of said silver migrates from said substrate into said wound.

9. The material as recited in claim 1, further comprising a third layer adjacent to said second layer, said third layer made of an air-permeable material.

10. The material as recited in claim 1, further comprising a third layer adjacent to said second layer, said third layer made of a water-permeable material.

11. A wound dressing, comprising:

a flexible fabric substrate;

a quantity of a bactericidal metal carried by said substrate; and

a layer of moisture-absorbing material attached to said substrate.

12. The dressing as recited in claim 11, wherein said bactericidal metal and said substrate have a combined weight, and wherein said quantity of metal is at least approximately 5 wt. % of said combined weight.

13. The dressing as recited in claim 11, wherein said metal and said substrate have a combined weight, and wherein said quantity of metal is at least approximately 20 wt. % of said combined weight.

14. The dressing as recited in claim 11, wherein said metal is silver.

15. The dressing as recited in claim 11, wherein said fabric is made of nylon.

16. The dressing as recited in claim 11, wherein said metal is silver, wherein said fabric is made of nylon, and wherein said silver is releasably bound to said fabric so that, when said first fabric is moistened and placed adjacent to a wound, at least a portion of said silver migrates into said wound.

17. The dressing as recited in claim 11, further comprising a third layer adjacent to said second layer, said third layer made of water-impermeable material.

18. The dressing as recited in claim 11, further comprising a third layer adjacent to said second layer, said third layer made of an air-permeable material.

19. The dressing as recited in claim 11, wherein said moisture-absorbing material is made of cotton.

20. The dressing as recited in claim 11, further comprising an adhesive layer attached to at least a portion of said moisture-absorbing said for adhering said dressing to intact skin.

21. The dressing as recited in claim 11, further comprising:

a third layer adjacent to said second layer, said third layer made of a water-impermeable material; and

an adhesive carried by at least a portion of said third layer, said adhesive positioned so that said adhesive adheres to intact skin when said dressing is placed in contact with a wound.

22. A method for making a multilayer material for use as a wound dressing, said method comprising the steps of:

providing a silver-containing fabric; and

attaching a moisture-absorbing layer of material to said fabric.

23. The method as recited in claim 22, wherein said fabric contains at least approximately 5 wt. % silver, and wherein said method further comprises the step of attaching a water-impermeable layer to said moisture-absorbing layer.

24. The method as recited in claim 22, wherein said fabric contains at least approximately 5 wt. % silver, further comprising the step of attaching an air-permeable layer to said moisture-absorbing layer, said air-permeable layer carrying an adhesive for attaching said multilayer material to skin.
