Abstract

A multiple use fluid dispenser dispenses a flowable material in a precise pattern and quantity with leaking and clogging between dispensing avoided by employing a trigger fired syringe plunger to expel a fixed volume through a band. Between strokes, an advancement knob rotates the band over a distal dispensing tip to a nondispensing location that wipes excess flowable material and seals a dispensing orifice in a fluid conduit. The advancement knob further may rotate the band to a dispensing position wherein a combination of one or more dispensing holes produce a desired pattern and rate of flow with material over the dispensing hole(s) serving to initiate the flowable material, to control placement, serve as a detachable bandage or buttress material, etc.

Claims

1. A dispenser for a surgical procedure, comprising:

a housing containing a volume of flowable material;

a dispensing orifice;

a fluid transfer apparatus operably configured to urge a portion of the volume of flowable material to the dispensing orifice;

a substrate overlying the dispensing orifice having a dispensing opening; and

a substrate transport mechanism operably configured to selectively offset the dispensing opening in the substrate from the dispensing orifice and to align the dispensing opening in the substrate with the dispensing orifice.

The dispenser of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises a band looped with the housing, the substrate transport mechanism comprising a rotation wheel in partial circumferential contact with the band, the substrate transport mechanism further operably configured to rotate the band in a selected direction to avoid returning a previously aligned portion of the band to the dispensing orifice.

3. The dispenser of claim 1, wherein the substrate further comprises a series of sprocket holes, the substrate transport mechanism comprising a sprocket wheel engaged to the series of sprocket holes.

4. The dispenser of claim 1, wherein the substrate further comprises an outer layer covering the dispensing opening in the substrate.

5. The dispenser of claim 4, wherein flowable material comprises an adhesive compound reactive to an initiator, the outer layer comprising a porous material containing the initiator.

6. The dispenser of claim 4, wherein the outer layer comprises a releasable attachment to the substrate for deposition during dispensing of the flowable material.

7. The dispenser of claim 1, further comprising an inner layer attached to the substrate positioned to contact the dispensing orifice when the substrate transport mechanism offsets the position of the dispensing opening of the substrate from the dispensing orifice.

8. The dispenser of claim 7, wherein the inner layer comprises a substantially continuous layer removed from the dispensing opening.

9. The dispenser of claim 7, wherein the inner layer comprises a continuous layer.

10. The dispenser of claim 1, wherein the fluid transfer apparatus comprises a syringe.

11. The dispenser of claim 10, wherein the fluid transfer apparatus further comprises:

a syringe barrel containing the volume of flowable material;

a syringe plunger received in the syringe barrel to expel the flowable material;

an anti-backup mechanism coupled to the syringe plunger operably to prevent retraction of the syringe plunger; and

an actuator operably coupled to selectively advance the syringe plunger.

12. The dispenser of claim 11, wherein the actuator comprises a trigger pivotally attached to the housing, a cam member extending into the handle from the trigger to engage the syringe plunger.

13. The dispenser of claim 1, further comprising an elongate shaft, comprising:

a fluid conduit in fluid communication between the volume of flowable material and the dispensing orifice;

the substrate passing over the dispensing orifice and looped on both sides of a length of the fluid conduit; and

an outer tube encompassing the looped length of the substrate and the length of the fluid conduit.

14. A dispenser, comprising:

a syringe comprising a syringe barrel and a syringe plunger containing a volume of flowable material;

a fluid conduit having a first end communicating with the volume of flowable material in the syringe barrel and a second end comprising a dispensing orifice;

an outer tube encompassing the fluid conduit;

a band comprising a loop having a series of longitudinally spaced dispensing openings, a portion of the loop passing through the outer tube positioned to closely overlay the dispensing orifice;

a band rotation mechanism operable to rotate the band within the outer tube to position a selected one of the series of longitudinally spaced dispensing openings relative to the dispensing orifice.

15. The dispenser of claim 14, further comprising a multiple stroke trigger operable to sequentially advance the syringe plunger into the syringe barrel to expel the volume of flowable material.

16. The dispenser of claim 14, further comprising an anti-backup mechanism operable to oppose retraction of the syringe plunger from the syringe barrel.

17. A dispenser for a surgical procedure, comprising:

a housing containing a volume of flowable material;

a dispensing orifice;

a fluid transfer apparatus operably configured to urge a portion of the volume of flowable material to the dispensing orifice;

a substrate overlying the dispensing orifice having a longitudinally spaced series of dispensing openings; and

a substrate transport mechanism operably configured to move the substrate in one direction across the dispensing orifice;

selectively offset the dispensing orifice between adjacent dispensing openings in the substrate and selectively aligning the dispensing orifice with a next dispensing opening in the substrate.

18. The dispenser of claim 17, wherein the substrate comprises a continuous loop.

19. The dispenser of claim 17, further comprising an outer layer attached over a selected dispensing opening, the outer layer comprising a chemical compound reactive with the flowable material.

20. The dispenser of claim 17, further comprising an inner porous layer attached to the substrate positioned to wipe and seal the dispensing orifice.
