REAL-TIME REMOTE PURCHASE-LIST CAPTURE SYSTEM
First Claim
1. A portable apparatus for use in enabling subsequent electronic purchase of a product by capturing identifying data during or shortly after electronic radio transmission associated with a corresponding product is received, the apparatus comprising:
- an activation input to receive an activation request from a user;
a frequency detection circuit for detecting a current frequency setting of a nearby radio in response to receiving the activation request;
an RF receiver for capturing RDBS data embedded at the detected broadcast frequency responsive to receiving the activation request; and
a digital memory for storing at leastan activation time when the activation request was received,the detected frequency setting of the nearby radio,and at least part of the captured RDBS data,to support subsequent identification of the advertised product to enable quick and easy purchase of the product by or on behalf of the user.

Abstract
A portable device is used to capture, in real time, data sufficient to identify a product or service promoted, or a music track played, on a broadcast medium such as radio. The device determines a current frequency setting of a nearby radio by short-range broadcast of a brief audio-frequency signature so as to form a feedback path from the radio sufficient to determine the frequency or station currently playing. The captured data is communicated to a services server to enable quick and convenient purchase of the desired product or service.

21. An application program storable in machine-readable memory in a cell phone and executable on the cell phone to support electronic purchase of a product during or shortly after a radio broadcast of an item associated with the product, the application program comprising:
-
first code to receive an activation instruction from a user motivated by hearing the item in the radio broadcast; second code to access a database for identifying a radio station based on user input of the city, state and frequency; and third code for storing the identified station along with a time stamp in memory in the cell phone for use in identifying the said product for subsequent on-line purchase of the product. - View Dependent Claims (22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27)

28. A system for acting on items identified in a radio broadcast comprising:
-
a server coupled to a communication network; a client data capture device, the capture device capable of storing a time stamp and a radio station identifier in response to user activation; the server arranged to receive the stored time stamp, radio station identifier and data identifying the capture device via the communication network; the server further arranged to identify an item that corresponds to the received time stamp and radio station identifier, and to present the item for user selection and futher action via an interactive user interface. - View Dependent Claims (29)

30. A method of real time remote purchase-list capture comprising the steps of:
-
receiving an activation instruction in or from a user-controlled device; responsive to the activation instruction, determining a current frequency setting of a radio receiver located adjacent to the user-controlled device; identifying a corresponding broadcast channel based on the current frequency setting of the receiver; identifying a product associated with the received activation instruction, wherein said identifying step includes; acquiring metadata associated with the received activation instruction; and determining what product was featured on the identified broadcast channel at the time of the activation instruction, based on the acquired metadata. - View Dependent Claims (31, 32, 33, 34, 35)

36. An advertising business method comprising the steps of:
-
advertising a product or a service on a broadcast medium; logging electronic purchases of the advertised product that are received at a services server; at the services server, determining which of the electronic purchases of the advertised product originated from a portable capture device that captured data identifying the advertised product at the time of broadcast of the advertisement on the broadcast medium; and reporting the determined purchases to the advertiser or its agent thereby providing feedback as to the efficacy of an advertising program in near-real time. - View Dependent Claims (37)
