Abstract

A method and apparatus for displaying received data, analyze the quality of the displayed data formulating a media-parameter suggestion for the encoder to alter the characteristics of data to be sent to the receiver, and sending from the receiver, the formulated suggestion.

Claims

1. A method of transmitting data from a user network comprising:

transmitting first data to a receiver for display, wherein the receiver analyzes, parameters associated with the quality of the displayed data;

receiving a media parameter suggestion transmitted from the receiver and based on the analysis to instruct an encoder to alter the characteristics of transmitted data to be sent to the receiver; and

transmitting second data to the receiver wherein the second data is altered based on the received media parameter suggestion to improve the quality of displayed data of the receiver.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting from the receiver a user preference to be used in the analysis.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the analysis is based on system load.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the analysis is based on component load, where a component is chosen from the set comprising central-processing unit, graphics, card and texture mapping engine.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the media-parameter suggestion includes:

timing information identifying the point in time where the data was collected; and

timing information identifying the point in time when a suggested action should be honored.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the media-parameter suggestion includes a suggestion to do at least one of the following:

alter a frame rate, alter a color depth, alter the window size, alter audio channel characteristics, alter the graphics hardware load, alter the CPU load, or alter the RAM amount available.

7. A computer-readable medium storing instructions for controlling a computing device to transmit data over a network, the instructions comprising:

transmitting first data to a receiver for display, wherein the receiver analyzes, parameters associated with the quality of the displayed data;

receiving a media parameter suggestion transmitted from the receiver and based on the analysis to instruct an encoder to alter the characteristics of transmitted data to be sent to the receiver; and

transmitting second data to the receiver wherein the second data is altered based on the received media parameter suggestion to improve the quality of displayed data of the receiver.

8. The computer-readable medium of claim 7, wherein the instructions further comprise:

transmitting from the receiver a user preference to be used in the analysis.

9. The computer-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the analysis is based on system load.

10. The computer-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the analysis is based on component load, where a component is chosen from the set comprising central-processing unit, graphics, card and texture mapping engine.

11. The computer-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the media-parameter suggestion includes:

timing information identifying the point in time where the data was collected; and

timing information identifying the point in time when a suggested action should be honored.

12. The computer-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the media-parameter suggestion includes a suggestion to do at least one of the following:

alter a frame rate, alter a color depth, alter the window size, alter audio channel characteristics, alter the graphics hardware load, alter the CPU load, or alter the RAM amount available.

13. A system for transmitting data over a network, the system comprising:

a module configured to transmit first data to a receiver for display, wherein the receiver analyzes, parameters associated with the quality of the displayed data;

a module configured to receive a media parameter suggestion transmitted from the receiver and based on the analysis to instruct an encoder to alter the characteristics of transmitted data to be sent to the receiver; and

a module configured to transmit second data to the receiver wherein the second data is altered based on the received media parameter suggestion to improve the quality of displayed data of the receiver.

14. The system of claim 13, further comprising:

a module configured to transmit from the receiver a user preference to be used in the analysis.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the analysis is based on system load.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein the analysis is based on component load, where a component is chosen from the set comprising central-processing unit, graphics, card and texture mapping engine.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein the media-parameter suggestion includes:

timing information identifying the point in time where the data was collected; and

timing information identifying the point in time when a suggested action should be honored.

18. The system of claim 14, wherein the media-parameter suggestion includes a suggestion to do at least one of the following:

alter a frame rate, alter a color depth, alter the window size, alter audio channel characteristics, alter the graphics hardware load, alter the CPU load, or alter the RAM amount available.
