Abstract

An instrument handle for storing of suture which can be easily accessed by a surgeon. The handle is provided with a cavity for housing suture. The cavity is accessed by opening a cover. The suture is wrapped around a tie-down bar disposed within the cavity. If desired, a surgical needle may be attached to the suture and stored within the cavity with the suture.

Claims

1. A suture storing device, comprising:

an elongated shaft having a longitudinal axis, a proximal end and a distal end;

a handle provided at the proximal end; and

a cavity within the handle for storing at least one strand of suture, the strand of suture being wrapped around a tie-down bar.

2. The suture storing device of claim 1, further comprising a needle attached to the strand of suture, the needle being stored with the suture stand in the cavity.

3. The suture storing device of claim 2, wherein the handle has an orifice through which the suture strand passes.

4. The suture storing device of claim 1, wherein a plurality of strands of suture are stored in the cavity of the handle.

5. The suture storing device of claim 1, wherein a plurality of strands of suture with attached needles are stored in the cavity of the handle.

6. The suture storing device of claim 1, wherein the elongated shaft is configured to accommodate an implantable device.

7. The suture storing device of claim 6, wherein the implantable device is a suture anchor or an implant.

9. The device of claim 7, wherein a surgical needle is attached to the strand of suture and is stored in the cavity with the suture.

10. The device of claim 7, wherein the elongated shaft is configured to accommodate an implantable device.

11. The device of claim 10, wherein the implantable device is a suture anchor or an implant.

8. A device for housing sutures attached to surgical needles, comprising:

an elongated shaft having a longitudinal axis, a proximal end and a distal end;

a handle provided at the proximal end; and

a cavity within the handle for storing at least one strand of suture wrapped around a tie-down bar

12. A method of dispensing a surgical suture, comprising the steps of:

providing a suture housing device comprising;

a cannulated elongated shaft having a longitudinal axis, a proximal end and a distal end;

a handle provided at the proximal end; and

a cavity adjacent the handle for storing at least one surgical suture wrapped around a tie-down bar, and a cover for the cavity;

opening the cover to access the surgical suture; and

deploying the surgical suture from around the tie-down bar.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising the step of deploying a needle attached to the surgical suture and stored in the cavity.
