Abstract

Techniques are provided for transporting subset of databases containing binary XML data. In one embodiment, a method is provided that allows transporting binary XML data that conforms to schema by also transporting the schema entries that are necessary to derive the binary XML. In another embodiment, a method is provided that allows transporting binary XML data that does not conform to schema by also transporting the token tables that contain the mapping for the binary XML.

Claims

1. A method for moving XML data from a source database to a target database, comprising:

generating a copy of a tablespace that is part of the source database, wherein the tablespace contains XML data has been encoded in a binary format;

incorporating the copy of the tablespace into the target database;

generating a copy of translation information from said source database that allows the XML data that resides in said tablespace to be derived from the binary format; and

incorporating the copy of translation information into the target database.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the XML data that resides in said tablespace includes unknown-schema XML data; and

the step of generating a copy of translation information includes generating a copy of a set of token tables that contain the translation information necessary to derive the XML data.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the step of incorporating the copy of translation information into the target database includes updating metadata within the target database to indicate that the copy of the set of token tables are associated with said copy of the tablespace.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein:

within the source database, the set of token tables is associated with an identifier;

the method further includes associating, within the target database, the copy of the set of token tables with said identifier; and

the identifier is unique relative to both the target database and the source database.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the XML data that resides in said tablespace includes XML data that conforms to a schema; and

the step of generating a copy of translation information includes updating a schema table in the target database in response to storing, within the target database, a definition of said schema;

wherein said definition includes said translation information.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein:

the translation information includes a schema-specific mapping for the XML data, within said copy of said tablespace, that conforms to said schema; and

the schema-specific mapping is between binary codes that represent said XML data in said binary format, and strings associated with said schema.

7. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 1.

8. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 2.

9. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 3.

10. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 4.

11. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 5.

12. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform the method recited in claim 6.
