1. A system (2100) for dispensing radiation to a patient comprising:
- a free standing capsule for dispensing radiation to a patient from a location internal to the patient comprising;
a radioactive assembly (2106) having a radioactive material (2107);
a first radiation resistant assembly (2102) having at least one first radiation resistant panel (2116) including a material that is resistant to radiation for impeding passage of radiation through the at least one first panel (2116) to the ambient environment of the capsule, wherein at least one gap (2122) is formed in the first radiation resistant assembly (2102) for allowing radiation to pass there through to the ambient environment of the capsule;
an actuator; and
a second radiation resistant assembly (2104) having at least one movable second radiation resistant panel (2136) including a material that is resistant to radiation for impeding passage of radiation through the at least one second panel (2136);
wherein the second radiation resistant assembly (2104) is operationally coupled to the actuator for moving the second radiation resistant assembly (2104) for positioning a respective second panel of the at least one second panel (2136) to a position with respect to a respective gap of the at least one gap (2122) for selectively covering at least a portion of the respective gap for impeding passage of radiation through the respective gap to the ambient environment of the capsule; and
control circuitry (906) for controlling activation of the actuator for positioning the respective second panel with respect to the respective gap.

Abstract
A method and system (2100) are provided for dispensing radiation to a patient from a location internal to the patient. The system (2100) includes a radioactive assembly (2106) having a radioactive material (2107); a first radiation resistant assembly (2102) having at least one first radiation resistant panel (2116), wherein at least one gap (2122) is formed in the first radiation resistant assembly (2102) for allowing radiation to pass there through to the ambient environment of the capsule; an actuator; and a second radiation resistant assembly (2104) having at least one movable second radiation resistant panel (2136) operationally coupled to the actuator for controllably moving the second radiation resistant assembly (2104) for positioning a respective second panel to a position with respect to a respective gap for selectively covering at least a portion of the respective gap for impeding passage of radiation through the respective gap to the ambient environment of the capsule; and control circuitry (906) for controlling activation of the actuator.

20. A method for dispensing radiation to a patient comprising the steps of:

dispensing radiation to a patient from a location internal to the patient comprising; disposing a radioactive assembly having a radioactive material within a free-standing capsule; providing a first radiation resistant assembly for impeding passage of radiation to the ambient environment of the capsule at a portion of the first assembly and allowing passage of radiation to the ambient environment of the capsule at another portion of the first assembly; providing an adjustable radiation resistant assembly having an adjustable position with respect to the first radiation resistant assembly for selectively impeding passage of radiation to the ambient environment of the capsule; providing for adjusting the adjustable radiation resistant assembly; and providing for controlling adjustment of the adjustable radiation resistant assembly for selectively allowing passage of radiation to the ambient environment of the capsule.

a free standing capsule for dispensing radiation to a patient from a location internal to the patient comprising; a radioactive assembly (2106) having a radioactive material (2107); a first radiation resistant assembly (2102) having at least one first radiation resistant panel including a material that is resistant to radiation for impeding passage of radiation through the at least one first panel (2116) to the ambient environment of the capsule, wherein at least one gap (2122) is formed in the first radiation resistant assembly (2102) for allowing radiation to pass there through to the ambient environment of the capsule; an actuator; a rotation device operatively coupled to the actuator for rotating upon activation of the actuator; and a second radiation resistant assembly (2104) having at least one movable second radiation resistant panel (2136) coaxially disposed about the first radiation resistant assembly (2102) and including a material that is resistant to radiation for impeding passage of radiation through the at least one second panel (2136); wherein the second radiation resistant assembly (2104) is operationally coupled to the rotation device for moving the second radiation resistant assembly (2104) for positioning a respective second panel of the at least one second panel (2136) to a position with respect to a respective gap of the at least one gap (2122) for selectively covering at least a portion of the respective gap for impeding passage of radiation through the respective gap to the ambient environment of the capsule; and control circuitry (906) for controlling activation of the actuator for positioning the respective second panel with respect to the respective gap.
