Abstract

In one embodiment, a method includes receiving at a protocol translator a first message from a first endpoint to a second endpoint. The first message includes a list of media capabilities of the first endpoint. The method also includes transmitting from the protocol translator a second message to the second endpoint including a media capabilities request header and receiving at the protocol translator a response message from the second endpoint. The response message includes a response header including a list of the media capabilities of the second endpoint.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving at a protocol translator a first message from a first endpoint having a first set of media capabilities to a second endpoint having a second set of media capabilities, said first message including a list of media capabilities of the first endpoint;

in response to said receiving, transmitting from the protocol translator a second message to the second endpoint including a media capabilities request header; and

receiving at the protocol translator a response message from the second endpoint, said response message including a response header comprising a list of the media capabilities of the second endpoint.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said list of the media capabilities of the second endpoint comprises at least two of audio, video, and data media capabilities.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said first endpoint comprises the H.323 endpoint and the second endpoint comprises the SIP endpoint.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein:

said receiving the first message comprises receiving a SETUP request from the H.323 endpoint; and

said transmitting the second message comprises transmitting an INVITE message to the SIP endpoint, said INVITE message including an INVITE header comprising a media capabilities request.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein said response message comprises a 200 message.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

in response to said receiving the response message from the SIP endpoint, transmitting to the H.323 endpoint a connect message;

wherein said SETUP request from the H.323 endpoint includes a SETUP header comprising at least one media capability, and said CONNECT message includes a CONNECT header comprising a matched media capability corresponding to one of the at least one media capabilities in the SETUP header.

7. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

in response to said receiving at the protocol translator the response message from the SIP endpoint, storing the list of the second set of media capabilities;

receiving at the protocol translator a first terminal capabilities set (TCS) message from the H.323 endpoint; and

in response to said receiving the TCS message from the H.323 endpoint, retrieving the list of the second set of media capabilities and transmitting from the protocol translator a second TCS message to the H.323 endpoint, said second TCS message including a TCS capabilities list comprising one or more media capabilities from the second set of media capabilities.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

said first TCS message includes a TCS capabilities list comprising a list of the first set of media capabilities; and

said TCS capabilities list in the second TCS message comprises a list of the media capabilities from the second set of media capabilities that match the media capabilities from the first set of media capabilities.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein:

said first endpoint comprises the SIP endpoint and the second endpoint comprises the H.323 endpoint.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein:

said receiving the first message comprises receiving a TCS message from the H.323 endpoint; and

said transmitting the second message comprises transmitting a 200 message to the SIP endpoint, said 200 message including an INVITE header comprising a media capabilities request.

11. A system, comprising:

a first interface for communication with an H.323 endpoint having a first set of media capabilities;

a second interface for communication with a session initiation protocol (SIP) endpoint having a second set of media capabilities;

control logic configured to;

receive a first message from a first endpoint to a second endpoint, said first message including a list of media capabilities of the first endpoint;

in response to said receiving, transmit a second message to the second endpoint including a media capabilities request header; and

receive a response message from the second endpoint, said response message including a response header comprising a list of the media capabilities of the second endpoint.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein said list of the media capabilities of the second endpoint comprises at least two of audio, video, and data media capabilities.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein said first endpoint comprises the H.323 endpoint and the second endpoint comprises the SIP endpoint.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein:

the first message comprises a setup request from the H.323 endpoint; and

the second message comprises an INVITE message to the SIP endpoint, said INVITE message including an INVITE header comprising a media capabilities request.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein said response message comprises a 200 message.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein the control logic is further configured to:

in response to said receiving the response message from the SIP endpoint, transmit to the H.323 endpoint a connect message;

wherein said setup request from the H.323 endpoint includes a setup header comprising at least one media capability, and said connect message includes a connect header comprising a matched media capability corresponding to one of the at least one media capabilities in the setup header.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein the control logic is further configured to:

in response to said receiving the response message from the SIP endpoint, store the list of the second set of media capabilities;

receive a first terminal capabilities set (TCS) message from the H.323 endpoint; and

in response to said receiving the TCS message from the H.323 endpoint, retrieve the list of the second set of media capabilities and transmit a second TCS message to the H.323 endpoint, said second TCS message including a second TCS capabilities list comprising one or more media capabilities from the second set of media capabilities.

18. The system of claim 14, wherein:

said first TCS message includes a TCS capabilities list comprising a list of the first set of media capabilities; and

said second TCS capabilities list in the second TCS message comprises a list of the media capabilities from the second set of media capabilities that match the media capabilities from the first set of media capabilities.

19. The system of claim 11, wherein said first endpoint comprises the H.323 endpoint and the second endpoint comprises the SIP endpoint.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein:

said first message comprises a TCS message from the H.323 endpoint; and

said second message comprises a 200 message to the SIP endpoint, said 200 OK message including an INVITE header comprising a media capabilities request.

21. A system, comprising:

a first interface for communication with an H.323 endpoint having a first set of media capabilities;

a second interface for communication with a session initiation protocol (SIP) endpoint having a second set of media capabilities;

means for receiving a first message from a first endpoint to a second endpoint, said first message including a list of media capabilities of the first endpoint;

means for transmitting a second message to the second endpoint including a media capabilities request header in response to said receiving; and

means for receiving a response message from the second endpoint, said response message including a response header comprising a list of the media capabilities of the second endpoint.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein said list of the media capabilities of the second endpoint comprises at least two of audio, video, and data media capabilities.

23. The system of claim 21, wherein said first endpoint comprises the H.323 endpoint and the second endpoint comprises the SIP endpoint.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein:

the first message comprises a setup request from the H.323 endpoint; and

the second message comprises an INVITE message to the SIP endpoint, said INVITE message including an INVITE header comprising a media capabilities request.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein said response message comprises a 200 message.

26. The system of claim 24, wherein the control logic is further configured to:

in response to said receiving the response message from the SIP endpoint, transmit to the H.323 endpoint a connect message;

wherein said setup request from the H.323 endpoint includes a setup header comprising at least one media capability, and said connect message includes a connect header comprising a matched media capability corresponding to one of the at least one media capabilities in the setup header.

27. The system of claim 24, wherein the control logic is further configured to:

in response to said receiving the response message from the SIP endpoint, store the list of the second set of media capabilities;

receive a first terminal capabilities set (TCS) message from the H.323 endpoint; and

in response to said receiving the TCS message from the H.323 endpoint, retrieve the list of the second set of media capabilities and transmit a second TCS message to the H.323 endpoint, said second TCS message including a second TCS capabilities list comprising one or more media capabilities from the second set of media capabilities.

28. The system of claim 24, wherein:

said first TCS message includes a TCS capabilities list comprising a list of the first set of media capabilities; and

said second TCS capabilities list in the second TCS message comprises a list of the media capabilities from the second set of media capabilities that match the media capabilities from the first set of media capabilities.

29. The system of claim 21, wherein said first endpoint comprises the H.323 endpoint and the second endpoint comprises the SIP endpoint.

30. The system of claim 29, wherein:

said first message comprises a TCS message from the H.323 endpoint; and

said second message comprises a 200 message to the SIP endpoint, said 200 message including an INVITE header comprising a media capabilities request.
