Abstract

Provided is a system and method of configuring IEDs to facilitate standardized communication messages among a plurality of IEDs within a power system network based on the IEC 61850 standard. A description file is described for an intelligent electronic device configured in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard. The description file includes a section which indicates which GOOSE message the intelligent electronic device should receive. In yet another embodiment, the description file includes a section which is capable of linking to logic functions of the intelligent electronic device for performing programmable data binding or dynamic data binding. A configuration tool is further provided for editing and creating such description files. A method for selectively receiving messages from an intelligent electronic device configured in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard is also described herein, along with a method for optimizing file space and improving execution speed of an intelligent electronic device configured in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard.

Claims

1. A description file for an intelligent electronic device (IED) configured in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard for GOOSE messaging with other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), comprising:

a section in the description file which indicates which GOOSE message the IED should receive.

2. The description file of claim 1, wherein the section of the description file includes logical node data from at least one of the other IEDs.

3. The description file of claim 1, wherein the section of the description file includes internal data specific to at least one of the other IEDs.

4. The description file of claim 1, wherein the section of the description file maps data between the IED and other IEDS.

5. The description file of claim 1, wherein the IED and other IEDs have different data structures and wherein the section of the description file includes a model for associating the data structure of the IED to the data structure of at least one of the other IEDs.

6. The description file of claim 1, wherein the description file is a configured IED description (CID) file.

7. The description file of claim 1 further comprising a section capable of linking to logic functions of the IED for performing programmable data binding or dynamic data binding.

8. A configuration tool for creating description files in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard for GOOSE messaging between an intelligent electronic device (IED) and other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), comprising

an editing tool adapted to edit the description file to create a section therein which indicates which GOOSE message the IED should receive.

9. The configuration tool of claim 8 wherein the description file is created based on an IED capability description (ICD) file.

10. The configuration tool of claim 8 wherein the description file is a configured IED description (CID) file.

11. The configuration tool of claim 9 further comprising a creation tool for creating the ICD file.

12. The configuration tool of claim 11 wherein the configuration tool is adapted to receive data relating to an IED model number, version number, or a part number, and wherein the creation tool creates an ICD file based on such data.

13. The configuration tool of claim 11 wherein the configuration tool is adapted to receive an ICD template file and supplemental data, and wherein the creation tool creates an ICD file based on the template file and supplemental data.

14. The configuration tool of claim 8 wherein the editing tool provides line-by-line editing of the description file.

15. The configuration tool of claim 8 wherein the editing tool is a GOOSE message editing tool.

16. The configuration tool of claim 8 wherein the editing tool is a report editing tool.

17. A description file for an intelligent electronic device (IED) configured in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard for messaging with other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), comprising:

a section in the description file capable of linking to logic functions of the IED for performing programmable data binding or dynamic data binding.

18. The description file of claim 17, wherein the section of the description file includes logical node data from at least one of the other IEDs.

19. The description file of claim 17, wherein the section of the description file includes internal data specific to at least one of the other IEDs.

20. The description file of claim 17, wherein the section of the description file maps data between the IED and other IEDs.

21. The description file of claim 17, wherein the IED and other IEDs have different data structures, and wherein the section of the description file includes a model for associating the data structure of the IED to the data structure of at least one of the other IEDs.

22. The description file of claim 17, wherein the description file is a configured IED description (CID) file.

23. The description file of claim 17, further comprising a section which indicates which message the IED should receive.

24. A configuration tool for creating description files in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard for messaging between an intelligent electronic device (IED) and other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), comprising

an editing tool adapted to edit the description file to create a section therein which links logic functions of the IED for performing programmable data binding or dynamic data binding.

25. The configuration tool of claim 24 wherein the description file is created based on an IED capability description (ICD) file.

26. The configuration tool of claim 24 wherein the description file is a configured IED description (CID) file.

27. The configuration tool of claim 24 further comprising a creation tool for creating the ICD file.

28. The configuration tool of claim 27 wherein the configuration tool is adapted to receive data relating to an IED model number, version number, or a part number, and wherein the creation tool creates an ICD file based on such data.

29. The configuration tool of claim 27 wherein the configuration tool is adapted to receive an ICD template file and supplemental data, and wherein the creation tool creates an ICD file based on the template file and supplemental data.

30. The configuration tool of claim 24 wherein the editing tool provides line-by-line editing of the description file.

31. The configuration tool of claim 24 wherein the editing tool is a GOOSE message editing tool.

32. The configuration tool of claim 24 wherein the editing tool is a report editing tool.

33. A method for selectively receiving messages from an intelligent electronic device (IED) configured in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard for messaging with other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), wherein the message includes a number of bits, including the steps of:

creating a message including at least one bit representative of the quality of the message, and

selectively receiving the message by analyzing the bit representative of the quality of the message.

34. A method for optimizing file space and improving execution speed of an intelligent electronic device (IED) configured in accordance with the IEC-61850 standard for messaging with other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), wherein the message includes a number of bits, including the steps of:

creating a message including at least one bit indicating important data bits, and

selectively receiving the message based on the bit indicating important data in order to prioritize the important data bits.
