Abstract

A gas valve having a valve member disposed within a valve cavity, and an elastomeric valve seat extending from a valve cavity wall into the valve cavity. The valve member is movable between an open position in which the valve member does not engage the resilient valve seat thereby permitting gas to flow through the gas valve, and a closed position in which the valve member does engage the resilient valve seat thereby preventing gas to flow through the gas valve. In some embodiments, the elastomeric valve seat extends radially into the valve cavity from a groove formed in the valve cavity wall.

Claims

1. A gas valve comprising:

a valve body having a valve cavity, wherein the valve cavity is defined at least in part by a valve cavity wall;

a groove formed within the valve cavity wall;

an elastomeric seat secured within the groove and extending radially into the valve cavity;

a valve member disposed within the valve cavity, the valve member being movable between an open position in which the valve member does not engage the elastomeric seat permitting gas to flow through the gas valve, and a closed position in which the valve member does engage the elastomeric seat preventing or substantially preventing gas to flow through the gas valve.

2. The gas valve of claim 1, wherein the valve member moves towards and contacts the elastomeric seat when moving into the closed position.

3. The gas valve of claim 2, wherein the valve member comprises an outer contact surface, and the outer contact surface contacts the elastomeric seat when moving into the closed position.

4. The gas valve of claim 1, wherein the groove is configured to permit removal of the elastomeric seat and installation of a replacement elastomeric seat.

5. The gas valve of claim 1, wherein the groove has a shape that is complementary to a shape of the elastomeric seat.

6. The gas valve of claim 1, wherein the elastomeric seat comprises a conical mating surface adapted to help center the valve member relative to the elastomeric seat.

7. The gas valve of claim 1, wherein the elastomeric seat comprises rubber.

8. The gas valve of claim 1, wherein the elastomeric seat is configured to permit some deformation in response to contact with the valve member when moving the valve member into the closed position.

9. The gas valve of claim 1, wherein the valve cavity wall is cylindrical in shape.

10. The gas valve of claim 9, wherein the groove and the elastomeric seat each extend around at least a substantial portion of the valve cavity wall.

11. A gas valve comprising:

a valve body having a valve cavity, wherein the valve cavity is defined by a valve cavity wall;

a valve member disposed within the valve cavity, the valve member comprising a first disk and a second disk;

a first groove formed within the valve cavity wall proximate the first disk;

a second groove formed within the valve cavity wall proximate the second disk;

a first elastomeric seal disposed within the first groove; and

a second elastomeric seal disposed within the second groove.

12. The gas valve of claim 11, wherein the valve member is movable between an open position in which gas flow is permitted through the gas valve and a closed position in which gas flow is not permitted through the gas valve.

13. The gas valve of claim 12, wherein the first disk contacts the first elastomeric seal and the second disk contacts the second elastomeric seal when the valve member moves into the closed position.

14. The gas valve of claim 11, wherein at least one of the first elastomeric seal and the second elastomeric seal are adapted to help center the valve member relative to the first elastomeric seal and/or the second elastomeric seal.

15. The gas valve of claim 11, wherein the first elastomeric seal is softer than the second elastomeric seal.

16. The gas valve of claim 11, wherein the first elastomeric seal fits snugly within the first groove.

17. The gas valve of claim 11, wherein the second elastomeric seal fits snugly within the second groove.

18. The gas valve of claim 11, wherein the first groove and the second groove are at least substantially annular.

19. The gas valve of claim 18, wherein the first elastomeric seat and the second elastomeric seat are at least substantially annular.

20. A gas valve comprising:

a valve body;

a valve member disposed within the valve body; and

a resilient seat disposed within the valve body such that the valve member moves into contact with the resilient seat when the valve member moves into a closed position.
