Abstract

A computer-implemented system and method for the deployment of automatically configuring network communication endpoints is disclosed. At least one logical profile is stored in a plurality of configuration files resident on a network. The logical profile includes configuration information as well as an extension from a communication distribution system which a device should serve. Upon connection to the network and input of configuration information corresponding to a pre-existing logical profile, the device automatically configures itself for use, reboots, and is operational in the desired form.

Claims

1. A method of associating a network communication device with a SIP enabled switch comprising the steps of:

establishing a logical configuration for said device having an assigned extension from said switch;

connecting said device to a digital network, said network being connected to said switch;

providing configuration information to said device which corresponds to said logical configuration;

transmitting an association request based on said configuration information from said device over said network; and

enabling said device to operate as said assigned extension from said switch.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said network communication device is a SIP telephone.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said logical configuration includes an assigned SIP server address.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said logical configuration is established in at least one configuration file stored on said network.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein said logical configuration includes a security code.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein said providing includes entering said configuration information using a keypad on said network communication device.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein said configuration information is provided to an IVR using DTMF.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said configuration information includes said associated extension number and said security code.

9. The method of claim 2, wherein said association request includes the MAC address of said SIP enabled device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein device is a SIP softphone.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

receiving a SIP communication from said switch destined for said assigned extension.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein said switch system is an IVR system.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein said switch system is a PBX system.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein said switch system is a ACD system.

15. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for causing a device to perform the steps comprising:

loading in a provisioning mode;

receiving configuration information from a user which identifies an extension which said device should serve as from an SIP enabled switch;

transmitting an association request based on said configuration information over a network; and

receiving a SIP communication from said switch destined for said extension.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 15, wherein said associated request includes the MAC address associated with said device.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 15, wherein said configuration information includes a username.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 17, wherein said username is said extension.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 17, wherein said configuration information includes a security code.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein said security code is numeric.

21. A system comprising:

a digital network;

a SIP gateway connected to said network;

at least one SIP enabled device operable to receive configuration information and transmit a registration request based upon said configuration information;

at least one communication server connected to said network, said communication server capable of routing network communications over said network to a first SIP enabled device;

a plurality of configuration files stored on said network, said configuration files having a plurality of entries, at least one of said entries corresponding to said first SIP enabled device; and

a registration server, said server operable to receive said registration request from said first SIP enabled device and enter at least a portion of the request into at least one of said configuration files.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein said digital network is a local area network.

23. The system of claim 21, wherein said digital network includes the Internet.

24. The system of claim 21, wherein said SIP enabled device is a SIP telephone

25. The system of claim 21, wherein said SIP enabled device is a SIP softphone.

26. The system of claim 21, wherein said configuration information includes a username.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein said username is an extension.

28. The system of claim 26, wherein said configuration information includes a security code.
