1. A medical lead system, comprising:
- a lead wire configured for insertion into a venous system or tunneled through biological tissue, including a terminal pin at one end for connecting the lead system to an implantable medical device, and an electrode at an opposite end in contact with biological cells; and
a bandstop filter associated with the lead wire, for attenuating current flow through the lead wire at a selected frequency, wherein the bandstop filter comprises a capacitor in parallel with an inductor, said parallel capacitor and inductor placed in series with the lead wire, wherein values of capacitance and inductance are selected such that the bandstop filter is resonant at a selected frequency.

Abstract
Medical lead systems utilizing electromagnetic bandstop filters are provide which can be utilized in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment for patients who have implanted medical devices. Such lead systems may be advantageously used in left ventricle cardiac stimulation systems, neuro-stimulation systems, and deep brain electrodes used for the treatment of Parkinson'"'"'s disease and other movement disorders. The bandstop filters, which include a tuned parallel capacitor and inductor circuit, are backwards compatible with known implantable deployment systems.
