Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention allow users to tag a multimedia program or stream with data or pointers to external information related to content of the multimedia program. Users in a social network may tag various aspects of the content, such as a particular actor, a type of car, jewelry, a location, a phrase, etc. This tagging information may then be linked to various websites that provide further information about the tagged content and may be keyed to video offset times.

Claims

1. A method of identifying high or low value content based on feedback from a plurality of users in a social network and linking that high or low value content to external, related information, said method comprising:

receiving playback data submitted by users of a social network service that indicates playback behavior of the users;

determining correlations among the playback data submitted by the users;

determining segments in the content based on the correlations in the collected playback data;

providing data that indicates the segments of the content to the users;

receiving information submitted by the users that indicates a location that provides related information about the segment that is external to the segment; and

providing data that indicates the location of the related, external information and the segment.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates a website.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates a person appearing in the segment.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates an object appearing in the segment.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates a place appearing in the segment.

6. An apparatus comprising means configured to perform the method of claim 1.

7. A computer readable medium comprising executable program code to configure a computer to perform the method of claim 1.

23. A computer readable medium comprising executable program code to configure a computer to perform the method of claim 1.

8. A method of extracting content from a media file based on feedback from a plurality of users in a social network service and linking the extracted content to related, external information, said method comprising:

receiving playback data submitted by users that indicates playback behavior of the users;

determining respective boundaries for segments based on the collected playback data;

determining relative values of segments based on the playback data;

selecting segments in the content based on the collected playback data and the relative value;

providing data that indicates the segments in the content to users of the social network service;

receiving information submitted by the users that indicates a location that provides related information about the segment that is external to the segment; and

providing data that indicates the location of the related, external information and the segment.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates a website.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates a person appearing in the segment.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates an object appearing in the segment.

12. The method of claim 8, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates a place appearing in the segment.

13. The method of claim 8, wherein providing data that indicates the location of the related, external information and the segment comprises providing the data only to users in a social network of the social network service.

14. The method of claim 8, wherein providing data that indicates the location of the related, external information and the segment comprises providing the data only to users that identify themselves as peers in the social network service.

15. An apparatus comprising means configured to perform the method of claim 8.

16. A computer readable medium comprising executable program code to configure a computer to perform the method of claim 8.

17. A method of linking content to external, related information based on feedback from a social network, said method comprising:

receiving information submitted by users in a social network that indicates a location that provides related information about content of a multimedia program; and

determining data that indicates the location of the related, external information and the multimedia program; and

tagging the multimedia program with information and pointers to the related, external information.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates a website.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates a person appearing in the segment.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates an object appearing in the segment.

21. The method of claim 17, wherein receiving information submitted by the users that indicates the location of the related, external information comprises receiving information that indicates a place appearing in the segment.
