Abstract

A patient simulator system for teaching patient care is provided. The system includes a patient simulator. The patient simulator includes a patient body comprising one or more simulated body portions. A respiratory system is positioned within the patient body. The respiratory system includes a pair of lungs and is configured to simulate a respiratory pattern of a patient. A circulatory system is also positioned within the patient body. The circulatory system is configured to simulate at least one circulatory parameter of the patient. The system also includes a control system in communication with the patient simulator. The control system includes a respiratory physiological model for controlling the simulated respiratory pattern of the respiratory system and a circulatory physiological model for controlling the at least one circulatory parameter of the circulatory system. The respiratory physiological model is configured to adjust the simulated respiratory pattern of the respiratory system at least partially based on a treatment administered to the patient simulator by a user.

Claims

1. A patient simulator system for teaching patient care, the system comprising:

a patient simulator comprising;

a patient body comprising one or more simulated body portions;

a respiratory system positioned within the patient body, the respiratory system including a pair of lungs for simulating a respiratory pattern of a patient; and

a circulatory system positioned within the patient body, the circulatory system for simulating at least one circulatory parameter of the patient; and

a control system in communication with the patient simulator, the control system comprising;

a respiratory physiological model for controlling the simulated respiratory pattern of the respiratory system, the respiratory physiological model configured to adjust the simulated respiratory pattern of the respiratory system at least partially based on a treatment administered to the patient simulator by a user; and

a circulatory physiological model for controlling the at least one circulatory parameter of the circulatory system.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the respiratory physiological model controls a respiratory rate and an inspiratory time of the respiratory system.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the respiratory physiological model controls an oxygen saturation of the respiratory system.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the respiratory physiological model controls an carbon dioxide concentration of the respiratory system.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the respiratory physiological model controls a lung sound of the respiratory system.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the circulatory physiological model is configured to adjust the at least one circulatory parameter of the circulatory system based on a treatment administered to the patient simulator by a user.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the circulatory physiological model controls a cardiac rhythm of the circulatory system.

8. The system of claim 6, wherein the circulatory physiological model controls a heart rate of the circulatory system.

9. The system of claim 6, wherein the circulatory physiological model controls a blood pressure of the circulatory system.

10. The system of claim 6, wherein the circulatory physiological model controls a heart sound of the circulatory system.

11. The system of claim 6, wherein the patient simulator is operable without physical connection to an external device.

12. The system of claim 6, wherein the control system further comprises a myocardial infarction model for controlling at least one circulatory parameter of the circulatory system to simulate a heart attack.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the myocardial infarction model controls a heart oxygenation parameter of the circulatory system.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the control system further comprises a pharmaceutical model in communication with at least one of the respiratory and circulatory models to control aspects of at least one of the respiratory and circulatory systems to simulate an effect of a pharmaceutical administered to the patient simulator.

15. A patient simulator system for teaching patient care, the system comprising:

a maternal simulator comprising one or more simulated body portions;

a fetal simulator positioned within the maternal simulator, the fetal simulator comprising;

a control system in communication with the maternal and fetal simulators, the control system configured for controlling simulated physical parameters of the maternal simulator and the fetal simulator, wherein a first set of fetal parameters of the fetal simulator are at least partially based on a first set of maternal parameters of the maternal simulator.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the first set of fetal parameters includes an oxygenation level.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the first set of maternal parameters includes a blood oxygenation level.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein the first set of maternal parameters includes at least one respiratory parameter.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the at least one respiratory parameter comprises a oxygen saturation level.

20. The system of claim 15, wherein the fetal simulator is configured for use separate from the maternal simulator as a newborn simulator after a simulated birth.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the newborn simulator fetus includes a first set of newborn parameters at least partially based on the first set of fetal parameters.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the first set of newborn parameters are associated with an APGAR score for the newborn simulator provided by the control system.
