Abstract

A migration framework provides for the migration of services in a cluster. A migratable target contains a list of servers in the cluster capable of hosting a migratable service. A migration manager can migrate the service between servers in the migratable target, and can activate an instance of the service on the selected host server. The migration manager ensures that only one active instance of the service exists in the cluster. A service stub can serve a user request on servers in the migration target, such as by order of preference, until the user request is served on the server hosting the active instance. A lease manager can assign a lease period to determine how long a server hosts an active instance.

Claims

1. A system for migrating a migratable service in a server cluster, comprising:

a server cluster comprising at least two servers;

a migration target comprising a list of servers in the server cluster capable of hosting a migratable service, wherein only one instance of the migratable service is active in the server cluster at any time; and

a migration manager capable of moving a migratable service between servers in the server cluster, the migration manager ensuring that only one active instance of the migratable service exists in the server cluster at any time.

2. A system according to claim 1, further comprising a lease manager adapted to assign a lease period to a server in the server cluster, the lease period determining how long the server will host an instance of the migratable service.

3. A system according to claim 2, wherein the lease manager is further capable of renewing a lease period for a server in the server cluster so the service will remain active.

4. A system according to claim 2, wherein an active instance of a migratable service is deactivated once the lease period expires.

5. A system according to claim 1, further comprising a shared persistence store from which a migratable service can recover a current state.

6. A system according to claim 1, wherein the migration target comprises an ordered list of servers.

7. A system according to claim 6, wherein a first server in the list of servers of the migration target is the preferred server to host an active instance of the migratable service.

8. A system according to claim 1, wherein the migratable target contains a list of servers that can host multiple migratable services, such that related migratable services can be moved together by the migration manager.

9. A system according to claim 1, further comprising an administration console allowing an administrator to initiate migration in the cluster.

10. A system according to claim 9, wherein the administration console allows an administrator to monitor migration in the cluster.

11. A system according to claim 9, wherein the administration console further allows an administrator to force deactivation of an active instance.

12. A system according to claim 9, wherein the administration console further allows an administrator to assign a migratable service to a migratable target.

13. A system according to claim 9, wherein the administration console further allows an administrator to monitor the health of a server in the server cluster.

14. A system according to claim 1, wherein the migration manager automatically migrates a service.

15. A system according to claim 1, wherein the migration manager is used to manually migrate a service.

16. A system according to claim 1, wherein service is a JMS server.

17. A system according to claim 1, wherein service is a transaction recovery service.

18. A computer readable storage medium containing code to migrate a migratable service in a server cluster, comprising:

a migration target comprising a list of servers in a server cluster capable of hosting a migratable service, wherein only one instance of the migratable service is active in the server cluster at any time; and

code for a migration manager using the migratable target and capable of moving a migratable service between servers in the server cluster, the migration manager ensuring that only one active instance of the migratable service exists in the server cluster at any time.

19. The computer readable storage medium of claim 18, further comprising a lease manager adapted to assign a lease period to a server in the server cluster, the lease period determining how long the server will host an instance of the migratable service.

20. The computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the lease manager is further capable of renewing a lease period for a server in the server cluster so the service will remain active.

21. The computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein an active instance of a migratable service is deactivated once the lease period expires.

22. The computer readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the code uses a shared persistence store from which a migratable service can recover a current state.

23. The computer readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the migration target comprises an ordered list of servers.

24. The computer readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein a first server in the list of servers of the migration target is the preferred server to host an active instance of the migratable service.

32. The computer readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the migration manager is used to manually migrate a service.

33. The computer readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the service is a JMS server.

34. The computer readable storage medium of claim 18, wherein the service is a transaction recovery service.

35. A computer readable storage medium containing code to migrate a migratable service in a server cluster, comprising:

a migration target comprising a list of servers in a server cluster capable of hosting a migratable JMS service, wherein only one instance of the migratable JMS service is active in the server cluster at any time; and

code for a migration manager using the migratable target and capable of moving the migratable service between servers in the server cluster, the migration manager ensuring that only one active instance of the migratable JMS service exists in the server cluster at any time.

36. The computer readable storage medium of claim 35, further comprising a lease manager adapted to assign a lease period to a server in the server cluster, the lease period determining how long the server will host an instance of the migratable JMS service.

37. The computer readable storage medium of claim 36, wherein the lease manager is further capable of renewing a lease period for a server in the server cluster so the JMS service will remain active.

38. The computer readable storage medium of claim 36, wherein an active instance of a migratable JMS service is deactivated once the lease period expires.

39. The computer readable storage medium of claim 35, wherein the code uses a shared persistence store from which a migratable JMS service can recover a current state.

40. The computer readable storage medium of claim 35, wherein the migration target comprises an ordered list of servers.

47. The computer readable storage medium of claim 43, wherein the administration console further allows an administrator to monitor the health of a server in the server cluster.

48. The computer readable storage medium of claim 35, wherein the migration manager automatically migrates the JMS service.

49. The computer readable storage medium of claim 35, wherein the migration manager is used to manually migrate the JMS service.

50. A computer readable storage medium containing code to migrate a migratable service in a server cluster, comprising:

a migration target comprising a list of servers in a server cluster capable of hosting a migratable transaction recovery service, wherein only one instance of the migratable transaction recovery service is active in the server cluster at any time; and

code for a migration manager using the migratable target and capable of moving the migratable service between servers in the server cluster, the migration manager ensuring that only one active instance of the migratable transaction recovery service exists in the server cluster at any time.

51. The computer readable storage medium of claim 50, further comprising a lease manager adapted to assign a lease period to a server in the server cluster, the lease period determining how long the server will host an instance of the migratable transaction recovery service.

52. The computer readable storage medium of claim 51, wherein the lease manager is further capable of renewing a lease period for a server in the server cluster so the transaction recovery service will remain active.

53. The computer readable storage medium of claim 51, wherein an active instance of a migratable transaction recovery service is deactivated once the lease period expires.

54. The computer readable storage medium of claim 50, wherein the code uses a shared persistence store from which a migratable transaction recovery service can recover a current state.

55. The computer readable storage medium of claim 50, wherein the migration target comprises an ordered list of servers.

56. The computer readable storage medium of claim 50, wherein a first server in the list of servers of the migration target is the preferred server to host an active instance of the migratable transaction recovery service.

57. The computer readable storage medium of claim 50, wherein the migratable target contains a list of servers that can host multiple migratable services, such that related migratable services can be moved together by the migration manager.

58. The computer readable storage medium of claim 50, further comprising an administration console allowing an administrator to initiate migration in the cluster.

59. The computer readable storage medium of claim 58, wherein the administration console allows an administrator to monitor migration in the cluster.

60. The computer readable storage medium of claim 58, wherein the administration console further allows an administrator to force deactivation of an active instance.

61. The computer readable storage medium of claim 58, wherein the administration console further allows an administrator to assign a migratable transaction recovery service to a migratable target.

62. The computer readable storage medium of claim 58, wherein the administration console further allows an administrator to monitor the health of a server in the server cluster.

63. The computer readable storage medium of claim 50, wherein the migration manager automatically migrates the transaction recovery service.

64. The computer readable storage medium of claim 50, wherein the migration manager is used to manually migrate the transaction recovery service.
