Abstract

A system and method for interconnecting multiple computers (M1, M2, . . . , Mn) via at least two communications networks (N1, N2, N3) are disclosed. The connections are made via multiple communications ports (28, 38). Data is sent and received via a data protocol which identifies the sequence position of each data packet in a transmitted sequence of data packets. The packets can be transmitted and/or received out of order. The multiple computers each execute a different portion of an applications program written to execute on a single computer.

Claims

1. A multiple computer system comprising a multiplicity of computers each executing a different portion of an application program written to be executed on a single computer and each having an independent local memory with at least one memory location being replicated in each said local memory, wherein said computers are interconnected by at least two communications networks.

2. The system as in claim 1, wherein each of said computers sends and receives data via said network with a data protocol which identifies the sequence position of each data packet in a transmitted sequence of data packets.

3. The system as in claim 2, wherein said packets can be transmitted or received out of sequence.

4. The system as in claim 3, wherein later received packets which are later in sequence than earlier received packets overwrite said earlier received packets.

5. The system as in claim 4, wherein later received packets which are earlier in sequence than earlier received packets, do not overwrite said earlier received packets.

6. The system as in claim 5, wherein said later received packets are discarded.

16. The system as in claim 1, wherein each said computer executes a different portion of a single application program written to execute on a single computer.

17. The system as in claim 1, wherein said single communications network is selected from the group of networks consisting of asynchronous transfer mode networks and those networks sold under the trade marks ETHERNET, InfiBand and MYRINET, and combinations of these.

18. The system as in claim 1, and further having three communications networks.

19. The system as in claim 1, wherein each said computer has a multiple communications port.

7. A multiple computer system comprising a multiplicity of computers each of which is interconnected by at least two communications networks and wherein each of said computers sends and receives data via said at least two communications networks with a data protocol which identifies the sequence position of each data packet in a transmitted sequence of data packets.

8. The system as in claim 7, wherein said packets can be transmitted or received out of sequence.

9. The system as in claim 8, wherein later received packets which are later in sequence than earlier received packets overwrite said earlier received packets.

10. The system as in claim 9, wherein later received packets which are earlier in sequence than earlier received packets, do not overwrite said earlier received packets.

11. The system as in claim 10, wherein said later received packets are discarded.

12. The system as in claim 11, wherein each said computer executes a different portion of a single application program written to execute on a single computer.

13. The system as in claim 12, wherein said single communications network is selected from the group of networks consisting of asynchronous transfer mode networks and those networks sold under the trade marks ETHERNET, InfiBand and MYRINET, and combinations of these.

14. The system as in claim 13, and further having three communications networks.

15. The system as in claim 14, wherein each said computer has a multiple communications port.
