Abstract

A system for processing data captured from rendered documents is described.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method of identifying a document, the method comprising:

determining a document context;

capturing a portion of the document

processing said portion to identify the document.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein determining a document context comprises capturing a second portion of a second document.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said second document is the document.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said second portion comprises said portion of the document.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising identifying a location within the document.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein identifying said location is performed in a layout independent manner.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said document context is geographic.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein determining a document context comprises obtaining a global positioning system coordinates.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said document context is temporal.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein a short time period indicates a close contextual relationship to the document.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein a long time period indicates a loose contextual relationship to the document.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein said processing is performed in a layout independent manner.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein capturing said portion comprises capturing a plurality of line portions of the document.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein a typographic change indicates a change in document context.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein processing comprises determining similar actions from other captures of portions of documents.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein processing identifies a plurality of identified documents.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the plurality of identified documents are ranked according to similar captures of portions of documents.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein said processing occurs asynchronously.

19. The method of claim 1, further comprising posting test related to the identified document to a computer accessible location.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein said portion comprises a series of characters having offset characteristics.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein processing comprises identifying document portions having matching offset characteristics.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein said offset characteristics are reversible to form a probable document portion.

23. A computing system having a processor coupled to a memory containing computer executable instructions for performing the method of claim 1.

24. A computer readable medium containing computer executable instructions for performing the method of claim 1.

25. A computer implemented method of empirically determining potential document capture errors, the method comprising:

capturing a portion of a document, said portion comprising a series of characters having offset characteristics;

attempting to reverse said offset characteristics to form a correct document portion utilizing an offset indexed dictionary; and

identifying probable errors where attempts to reverse said offset characteristics fail.
