Abstract

A profile includes an indication of one or more topics of interest. A mixing server is configured to create a custom media channel based on the profile. A playback application is configured to provide the custom media channel upon a request from a user, wherein the custom media channel includes more than one item of multimedia content.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a profile including an indication of one or more topics of interest;

a mixing server that is configured to create a custom media channel based on the profile; and

a playback application that is configured to provide the custom media channel upon a request from a user, wherein the custom media channel includes more than one item of multimedia content.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising an advertising server configured to provide the advertising content, wherein the mixing server is further configured to include advertising content in the custom media channel.

3. The system of claim 1, further comprising a multimedia database that includes the multimedia content and metadata relating to the multimedia content, wherein the playback application is configured to retrieve the multimedia content from the multimedia database.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising a client device that is one of a content processing device, a desktop computer, a laptop computer, and a handheld computer, wherein the client device selectively receives the custom media channel in response to the request.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the custom media channel is downloaded to the client device prior to the request.

6. The system of claim 4, wherein the playback application is included in the client device.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the custom media channel is provided via a packet switched network.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the playback application is included in the mixing server.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the playback application is configured to support a plurality of playback modes including an interactive playback mode and a continuous play playback mode.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the playback application is configured to update the profile.

11. A method, comprising:

receiving a profile including an indication of one or more topics of interest;

creating a custom media channel based on the profile; and

providing the custom media channel upon a request from a user, wherein the custom media channel includes more than one item of multimedia content.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising including advertising content in the custom media channel.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the multimedia content and metadata relating to the multimedia content are stored in a multimedia database.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the request is made through a client device that is one of a content processing device, a desktop computer, a laptop computer, and a handheld computer.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising delivering the custom media channel to the client device in response to the request.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising downloading the custom media channel to the client device prior to the request.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein the custom media channel is provided via a packet switched network.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein the custom media channel is provided according to a plurality of playback modes, including an interactive playback mode and a continuous play playback mode.

19. The method of claim 11, further comprising updating the profile based on user input.

20. The method of claim 11, tangibly embodied on a computer-readable medium as a set of computer-executable instructions.

21. A system, comprising:

a profile including an indication of one or more topics of interest;

a mixing server configured to create a custom media channel based on profile;

a multimedia database that includes multimedia content and metadata relating to the multimedia content;

a playback application that is configured to provide the custom media channel upon a request from a user and to update the profile based on user input, wherein the custom media channel includes more than one item of the multimedia content, and further wherein the custom media channel is provided according to a plurality of playback modes, including an interactive playback mode and a continuous play playback mode; and

a client device that selectively receives the custom media channel in response to the request according to a plurality of playback modes, including an interactive playback mode and a continuous play playback mode.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the playback application is included in one of the mixing server and the client device.

23. The system of claim 21, wherein the custom media channel is downloaded to the client device prior to the request.

24. The system of claim 21, wherein the client device selectively receives the custom media channel in response to the request.
