Abstract

Syndication data feed items, corresponding to hosted content, are provided to a user program. A resource locator to hosted content to which a syndication data feed item corresponds is processed, including adjusting the resource locator to associate the resource locator with an intervention service with regard to the syndication data feed item. The processed syndication data feed items are provided to the user program. In addition, requests are processed to view hosted content corresponding to syndication data feed items. An intervention service receives a request from a user program to view hosted content to which a syndication data feed item corresponds, including a resource locator to the host that has been adjusted in the syndication data feed item to associate the resource locator with an intervention service. Intervention processing is performed, including causing interaction with the host of the requested content such that the host content is caused to be displayed at a user location.

Claims

1. A method to provide syndication data feed items to a user program, wherein the syndication data feed items correspond to hosted content, comprising:

for each of a plurality of syndication data feed items,

processing a resource locator to hosted content to which that syndication data feed item corresponds, including adjusting the resource locator to associated the resource locator with an intervention service with regard to the syndication data feed item;

providing the processed syndication data feed items to the user program.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving the plurality of syndication data feed items from at least one host web site according to a syndication protocol, wherein the syndication data feed items each include a resource locator to hosted content.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the resource locators are Universal Resource Locators (URL'"'"'s); and

adjusting the resource locator includes adjusting the URL to a URL of the intervention service.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein:

adjusting the URL to a URL of the intervening service includes adjusting the URL such that a locator to the hosted content to which a syndication data item corresponds is a parameter to that adjusted URL.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein:

adjusting the URL to a URL of the intervening service includes adjusting the URL such that an encoded version of a locator to the hosted content to which a syndication data item corresponds is provided as a parameter to that adjusted URL.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein:

adjusting the URL to a URL of the intervening service includes maintaining data usable by the intervention service to correlate the encoded version of the locator, to the hosted content, to the actual locator to the hosted content.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein:

providing the processed syndication data feed items includes providing the processed syndication data feed items to a syndication data feed reader program according to a syndication protocol.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

processing each syndication data feed item to generate therefrom an indication from which supplemental content may be determined for display in association with the corresponding hosted content; and

for each syndication data feed item, saving the generated indication in association with that syndication data feed item.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein:

the supplemental content includes advertising.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving metadata regarding the syndication data feed item.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein:

receiving metadata is via a moderator interface.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein:

receiving metadata based on operations of a moderator.

13. A computing system configured to perform the method of claim 1.

14. A computer program product to provide syndication data feed items to a user program, wherein the syndication data feed items correspond to hosted content, the computer program product comprising at least one computer-readable medium having computer program instructions stored therein which are operable to cause at least one computing device to:

for each of a plurality of syndication data feed items,

process a resource locator to hosted content to which that syndication data feed item corresponds, including adjusting the resource locator to associated the resource locator with an intervention service with regard to the syndication data feed item;

provide the processed syndication data feed items to the user program.

15. The computer program product of claim 14, wherein:

the computer program instructions further include computer program instructions operable to cause the at least one computing device to receive the plurality of syndication data feed items from at least one host web site according to a syndication protocol, wherein the syndication data feed items each include a resource locator to hosted content.

16. The computer program product of claim 14, wherein:

the resource locators are Universal Resource Locators (URL'"'"'s); and

the computer program instructions operable to cause the at least one computing device to adjust the resource locator include computer program instructions operable to cause the at least one computing device to adjust the URL to a URL of the intervention service.

17. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein:

the computer program instructions operable to cause the at least one computing device to adjust the URL to a URL of the intervening service include computer program instructions to adjust the URL such that a locator to the hosted content to which a syndication data item corresponds is a parameter to that adjusted URL.

18. The computer program product of claim 16, wherein:

the computer program instructions operable to cause the at least one computing device to adjust the URL to a URL of the intervening service include computer program instructions to adjust the URL such that an encoded version of a locator to the hosted content to which a syndication data item corresponds is provided as a parameter to that adjusted URL.

19. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein:

the computer program instructions operable to cause the at least one computing device to adjust the URL to a URL of the intervening service include computer program instructions to maintain data usable by the intervention service to correlate the encoded version of the locator, to the hosted content, to the actual locator to the hosted content.

20. The computer program product of claim 14, wherein:

the computer program instructions operable to cause the at least one computing device to provide the processed syndication data feed items includes computer program instructions operable to cause the at least one computing device to provide the processed syndication data feed items to a syndication data feed reader program according to a syndication protocol.

21. The computer program product of claim 14, wherein the computer program instructions are further operable to cause the at least one computing device to:

process each syndication data feed item to generate therefrom an indication of a characterization of the syndication data feed item from which supplemental content may be determined for display in association with the corresponding hosted content; and

for each syndication data feed item, save the generated indication in association with that syndication data feed item.

22. The computer program product of claim 21, wherein:

the supplemental content includes advertising.

23. The computer program product of claim 14, wherein the computer program instructions are further operable to cause the at least one computing device to:

receive metadata regarding the syndication data feed item.

24. The computer program product of claim 23, wherein the computer program instructions are further operable to cause the at least one computing device to:

receive metadata is via a moderator interface.

25. The computer program product of claim 23, wherein the computer program instructions are further operable to cause the at least one computing device to:

receive metadata based on operations of a moderator.

[Processing the Request to View the Feed Item]

26. A method to process requests to view hosted content corresponding to syndication data feed items, comprising:

by an intervention service, receiving a request from a user program to view hosted content to which a syndication data feed item corresponds, wherein the request includes a resource locator to the host that has been adjusted in the syndication data feed item to associate the resource locator with an intervention service with regard to the syndication data feed item;

by the intervention service,

performing intervention processing with respect to the syndication data feed item of the request; and

causing interaction with the host of the requested content such that the host content is caused to be displayed at a user location.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the step of causing interaction with the host of the requested content such that the host content is caused to be displayed at a user location includes

the intervention service requesting the content from the host; and

the intervention service providing the host content to cause the host content to be displayed at a user location.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the step of causing interaction with the host of the requested content such that the host content is caused to be displayed at a user location includes causing a program associated with the user to be redirected to the host.

29. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the intervention processing includes determining an intervention operation based at least in part on an identity of the requesting user.

30. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the intervention processing includes causing advertising to be displayed to the requesting user.

31. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the intervention processing includes processing a previously determined indication of a characterization of the syndication data feed item to determine supplemental content to be displayed in association with the requested host content.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein:

the supplemental content includes advertising.

33. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the intervention processing includes determining metadata associated with the syndication data feed item, to be displayed in association with the requested host content.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein:

determining the metadata includes, based on the syndication data feed item, accessing previously determined metadata for that syndication data feed item.

35. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the intervention processing includes characterizing the syndication data feed item to determine supplemental content to be displayed in association with the requested host content.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein:

the intervention processing further includes obtaining a copy of the syndication data feed item for analysis based on information in the request received from the user program.

37. The method of claim 35, wherein:

the supplemental content includes advertising.

38. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the intervention processing includes causing advertising to be displayed to the requesting user based at least in part on characteristics of the requesting user.

39. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the intervention processing includes causing information to be displayed to the user in addition to the requested information.

40. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the intervention processing includes soliciting and receiving feedback from the user regarding the requested content.

41. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the intervention processing includes monetizing the request to view hosted content.

42. The method of claim 26, wherein:

the intervention processing is based at least in part on history of prior intervention processing with respect to the syndication data feed item of the request.

43. The method of claim 42, wherein:

the intervention processing includes accessing an indication of the history based on an indication of the syndication data feed item of the request.

44. A computing system configured to perform the method of claim 26.

45. A computer program product to process requests to view hosted content corresponding to syndication data feed items, the computer program product comprising at least one computer-readable medium having computer program instructions stored therein which are operable to cause at least one computing device to:

by an intervention service, receive a request from a user program to view hosted content to which a syndication data feed item corresponds, wherein the request includes a resource locator to the host that has been adjusted in the syndication data feed item to associate the resource locator with an intervention service with regard to the syndication data feed item;

by the intervention service,

perform intervention processing with respect to the syndication data feed item of the request; and

cause interaction with the host of the requested content such that the host content is caused to be displayed at a user location.

46. The computer program product of claim 45,wherein:

the computer program instructions operable to cause the at least one computing device to cause interaction with the host of the requested content such that the host content is caused to be displayed at a user location includes

computer program instructions operable to cause the intervention service to request the content from the host; and

computer program instructions operable to cause the intervention service to provide the host content, to cause the host content to be displayed at a user location.

47. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the computer program instructions operable to cause the at least one computing device to cause interaction with the host of the requested content such that the host content is caused to be displayed at a user location includes computer program instructions to cause a program associated with the user to be redirected to the host.

48. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the intervention processing includes determining an intervention operation based at least in part on an identity of the requesting user.

49. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the intervention processing includes causing advertising to be displayed to the requesting user.

50. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the intervention processing includes processing a previously determined indication of a characterization of the syndication data feed item to determine supplemental content to be displayed in association with the requested host content.

51. The computer program product of claim 50, wherein:

the supplemental content includes advertising.

52. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the intervention processing includes determining metadata associated with the syndication data feed item, to be displayed in association with the requested host content.

53. The computer program product of claim 52, wherein:

determining the metadata includes, based on the syndication data feed item, accessing previously determined metadata for that syndication data feed item.

54. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the intervention processing includes characterizing the syndication data feed item to determine supplemental content to be displayed in association with the requested host content.

55. The computer program product of claim 54, wherein:

the intervention processing further includes obtaining a copy of the syndication data feed item for analysis based on information in the request received from the user program.

56. The computer program product of claim 54, wherein:

the supplemental content includes advertising.

57. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the intervention processing includes causing advertising to be displayed to the requesting user based at least in part on characteristics of the requesting user.

58. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the intervention processing includes causing information to be displayed to the user in addition to the requested information.

59. The computer program product of claim 45 wherein:

the intervention processing includes soliciting and receiving feedback from the user regarding the requested content.

60. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the intervention processing includes monetizing the request to view hosted content.

61. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the intervention processing is based at least in part on history of prior intervention processing with respect to the syndication data feed item of the request.

62. The computer program product of claim 45, wherein:

the intervention processing includes accessing an indication of the history based on an indication of the syndication data feed item of the request.

63. A method to provide syndication data feed items to a user program, wherein the syndication data feed items correspond to hosted content, comprising:

for each of a plurality of syndication data feed items,

processing that syndication data feed item to include a web beacon with regard to the syndication data feed item;

providing the processed syndication data feed items to the user program.

65. A computing system configured to perform the method of claim 63.

A computer program product to provide syndication data feed items to a user program, wherein the syndication data feed items correspond to hosted content, the computer program product comprising at least one computer-readable medium having computer program instructions stored therein which are operable to cause at least one computing device to:

for each of a plurality of syndication data feed items,

process that syndication data feed item to include a web beacon with regard to the syndication data feed item;

provide the processed syndication data feed items to the user program.
