Abstract

The prosthetic joint has at least two members having each a cooperating articulating surface layer on a substrate material. At least one of said articulating surface layers comprises amorphous diamond-like carbon; or Titanium Nitrate (TiN) on a bonding layer bonded to the substrate material. The prosthetic joint provides a reduction of the number of wear debris and shows enhanced dry run properties.

Claims

1. A prosthetic joint comprising:

a first and a second member;

the first member having a first articulating surface layer and a first substrate material; and

the second member having a second articulating surface layer and a second substrate material wherein at least one of said first and second articulating surface layers comprises an amorphous diamond-like carbon.

2. A prosthetic joint according to claim 1, wherein said amorphous diamond-like carbon is a tetrahedral amorphous diamond-like carbon.

3. A prosthetic joint according to claim 2, wherein said first articulating surface layer is formed by a coating applied to a metallic or ceramic substrate, from the following substrates CoCrMo, CoCrMoC, Ti, TAN, TAV, Aluminum Oxide or Zirconium Oxide.

4. A prosthetic joint according to claim 1, wherein said first articulating surface layer is between 0.5 μ

m and 800 μ

m.

5. A prosthetic joint according to claim 1, wherein a bonding layer is disposed between said first articulating surface layer and said first substrate material.

6. A prosthetic joint according to claim 8, wherein said bonding layer is between 3 nm and 40 μ

m.

7. A prosthetic joint according to claim 8, wherein said bonding layer comprises biocompatible metals.

8. A prosthetic joint according to claim 1, wherein said first articulating surface layer is a multi-layer composite.

9. A prosthetic joint according to claim 12, wherein said multi-layer composite comprises the following sequence of single layers:

(Substrate)-Ti—

TiN—

Ti—

TiN.

10. A prosthetic joint according to claim 1, wherein the joint is part of prosthesis for the hip, knee shoulder, or of an intervertebral implant.

11. A prosthetic joint according to claim 1 wherein said first articulating surface layer is between 2 μ

m and 25 μ

m.

12. A prosthetic joint according to claim 3, wherein said first articulating surface layer is between 0.5 μ

m and 800 μ

m.

13. A prosthetic joint according to claim 3 wherein said first articulating surface layer is between 2 μ

m and 25 μ

m.

14. A prosthetic joint according to claim 8 wherein said bonding layer is between 50 μ

m and 9 μ

m.

15. A prosthetic joint comprising:

a first and a second member;

the first member having a first articulating surface layer and a first substrate material; and

the second member having a second articulating surface layer and a second substrate material wherein at least one of said first and second articulating surface layers comprises titanium nitrate on a bonding layer bonded to at least one of said first and second substrate materials.

16. A prosthetic joint according to claim 15, wherein said first articulating surface layer is between 0.5 μ

m and 800 μ

m.

17. A prosthetic joint according to claim 15, wherein said first articulating surface layer is between 2 μ

m and 25 μ

m.

18. A prosthetic joint according to claim 15, wherein said first articulating surface layer is a multi-layer composite comprising the following sequence of single layers:

(Substrate)-Ti—

TiN—

Ti—

TiN.

19. A prosthetic joint according to claims 15, wherein the joint is part of a prosthesis for the hip, knee or shoulder or intervertebral implant.

20. A prosthetic joint comprising:

a first and a second member;

the first member having a first articulating surface layer and a first substrate material;

wherein the first articulating surface layer is between 2 μ

m and 25 μ

m; and

the second member having a second articulating surface layer and a second substrate material wherein at least one of said first and second articulating surface layers comprises an amorphous diamond-like carbon.
