Abstract

Techniques provide a file plan including a plurality of containers, wherein each container is capable of providing management information for record information objects assigned to the container, wherein the record information objects represent documents, wherein one of the containers points to a physical record. An electronic record associated with the physical record is stored. The physical record is automatically associated with the electronic record by updating the file plan.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

providing a file plan including a plurality of containers, wherein each container is capable of providing management information for record information objects assigned to the container, wherein the record information objects represent documents, wherein one of the containers points to a physical record;

storing an electronic record associated with the physical record; and

automatically associating the physical record with the electronic record by updating the file plan, wherein the physical record and the electronic record have a same record information object (RIO).

2. The method of claim 1, wherein automatically associating further comprises:

associating the electronic record to the same record information object (RIO) with which the physical record is associated.

3. A method, comprising:

providing a file plan including a plurality of containers, wherein each container is capable of providing management information for record information objects assigned to the container, wherein the record information objects represent documents, wherein one of the containers points to a physical record, wherein the physical record is associated with an existing, first record information object (RIO);

storing an electronic record associated with the physical record;

generating a new, second record information object (RIO) that is associated with the electronic record; and

automatically associating the second record information object with the first record information object (RIO) associated with the physical record.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein at least some portion of metadata associated with the record information object (RIO) is copied to the second record information object.

5. A method comprising:

providing a file plan including a plurality of containers, wherein each container is capable of providing management information for record information objects assigned to the container, wherein the record information objects represent documents, wherein one of the containers points to a physical record;

storing an electronic record associated with the physical record; and

automatically associating the physical record with the electronic record by updating the file plan.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the physical record and the electronic record have a same record information object (RIO).

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the physical record is associated with an existing, first record information object (RIO), further comprising:

generating a new, second record information object (RIO) that is associated with the electronic record; and

automatically associating the second record information object with the first record information object (RIO).

8. The method of claim 5, wherein the physical record comprises a group of physical records.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein the physical record and the electronic record are separately disposed of.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein a record information object (RIO) is associated with the physical record, and wherein disposing of the physical record further comprises:

removing a link from the record information object to the physical record.

11. A computer program product comprising a computer useable medium including a computer readable program, wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to:

provide a file plan including a plurality of containers, wherein each container is capable of providing management information for record information objects assigned to the container, wherein the record information objects represent documents, wherein one of the containers points to a physical record;

store an electronic record associated with the physical record; and

automatically associate the physical record with the electronic record by updating the file plan, wherein the physical record and the electronic record have a same record information object (RIO).

12. The computer program product of claim 11, wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to:

associate the electronic record to the same record information object (RIO) with which the physical record is associated.

13. A computer program product comprising a computer useable medium including a computer readable program, wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to:

provide a file plan including a plurality of containers, wherein each container is capable of providing management information for record information objects assigned to the container, wherein the record information objects represent documents, wherein one of the containers points to a physical record, wherein the physical record is associated with an existing, first record information object (RIO);

store an electronic record associated with the physical record;

generate a new, second record information object (RIO) that is associated with the electronic record; and

automatically associate the second record information object with the first record information object (RIO) associated with the physical record.

14. The computer program product of claim 13, wherein at least some portion of metadata associated with the record information object (RIO) is copied to the second record information object.

15. A computer program product comprising a computer useable medium including a computer readable program, wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to:

provide a file plan including a plurality of containers, wherein each container is capable of providing management information for record information objects assigned to the container, wherein the record information objects represent documents, wherein one of the containers points to a physical record;

store an electronic record associated with the physical record; and

automatically associate the physical record with the electronic record by updating the file plan.

16. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the physical record and the electronic record have a same record information object (RIO).

17. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the physical record is associated with an existing, first record information object (RIO), and wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to:

generating a new, second record information object (RIO) that is associated with the electronic record; and

automatically associating the second record information object with the first record information object (RIO).

18. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the physical record comprises a group of physical records.

19. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the physical record and the electronic record are separately disposed of.

20. The computer program product of claim 19, wherein a record information object (RIO) is associated with the physical record, and wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to:

remove a link from the record information object to the physical record.

21. A system, comprising:

logic capable of performing operations, the operations comprising;

providing a file plan including a plurality of containers, wherein each container is capable of providing management information for record information objects assigned to the container, wherein the record information objects represent documents, wherein one of the containers points to a physical record;

storing an electronic record associated with the physical record; and

automatically associating the physical record with the electronic record by updating the file plan, wherein the physical record and the electronic record have a same record information object (RIO).

22. The system of claim 21, wherein operations for automatically associating further comprise:

associating the electronic record to the same record information object (RIO) with which the physical record is associated.

23. A system, comprising:

logic capable of performing operations, the operations comprising;

providing a file plan including a plurality of containers, wherein each container is capable of providing management information for record information objects assigned to the container, wherein the record information objects represent documents, wherein one of the containers points to a physical record, wherein the physical record is associated with an existing, first record information object (RIO);

storing an electronic record associated with the physical record;

generating a new, second record information object (RIO) that is associated with the electronic record; and

automatically associating the second record information object with the first record information object (RIO) associated with the physical record.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein at least some portion of metadata associated with the record information object (RIO) is copied to the second record information object.

25. A system comprising:

logic capable of performing operations, the operations comprising;

providing a file plan including a plurality of containers, wherein each container is capable of providing management information for record information objects assigned to the container, wherein the record information objects represent documents, wherein one of the containers points to a physical record;

storing an electronic record associated with the physical record; and

automatically associating the physical record with the electronic record by updating the file plan.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the physical record and the electronic record have a same record information object (RIO).

27. The system of claim 25, wherein the physical record is associated with an existing, first record information object (RIO), wherein the operations further comprise:

generating a new, second record information object (RIO) that is associated with the electronic record; and

automatically associating the second record information object with the first record information object (RIO).

28. The system of claim 25, wherein the physical record comprises a group of physical records.

29. The system of claim 25, wherein the physical record and the electronic record are separately disposed of.

30. The system of claim 29, wherein a record information object (RIO) is associated with the physical record, and wherein operations for disposing of the physical record further comprise:

removing a link from the record information object to the physical record.
