Abstract

Disclosed is a method (600) of scrolling a list (510) including video items (504-508) on a display device (501). The list is scrolled to modify a displayed subset of the items. The scrolling of the list is terminated and at least one of the displayed video items (507) is played after the termination, and the playback of the at least one displayed video item is then adapted after a predetermined period of time. The terminating of the scrolling may be in response to a user input. The displayed video items generally comprise one selected focus item the playback of which is adapted differently from the remaining displayed video items. The adapting is preferably to stop the playback of the video items.

Claims

1. A method of scrolling a list including video items on a display device, said method comprising the steps of:

5 (a) scrolling the list to modify a displayed subset of said items; and

(b) terminating the scrolling of said list and playing at least one of said displayed video items after said termination, and adapting the playback of said at least one displayed video item after a predetermined period of time.

2. A method of claim 1 wherein the terminating of the scrolling is in response to a user input.

3. A method of claim 1 wherein the displayed video items comprises one selected focus item the playback of which is adapted differently from the remaining displayed video items.

4. A method of claim 1 wherein said predetermined period of time is determined by the position of said video items in said list relative to a reference item of said items.

5. A method of claim 1 wherein said predetermined period of time is determined by a display position of said video items.

6. A method of claim 1 wherein said adapting is to stop the playback of said video items.

7. A method of claim 6 wherein said predetermined period of time is determined by the position of said video items in said list relative to a reference item of said items.

8. A method of claim 6 wherein said predetermined period of time is determined by the display position of said video items.

9. A method of claim 1 wherein said adapting is to adapt the playback speed of said items.

10. A method of claim 9 wherein said predetermined period of time is determined by the position of said video items in said list relative to a reference item of said items.

11. A method of claim 9 wherein said predetermined period of time is determined by the display position of said video items.

12. A method of claim 1 wherein said adapting operates to show a reduced subset of frames from said video items.

13. A method of claim 12 wherein said predetermined period of time is determined by the position of said video items in said list relative to a reference item of said items.

14. A method of claim 11 wherein said predetermined period of time is determined by the display position of said video items.

15. A method according to claim 1 wherein the playing of said at least one video item is commenced (i) during the scrolling or (ii) upon terminating the scrolling.

16. A user interface comprising:

a viewing window displayable upon a display device in which a plurality of items of a collection are represented and adapted for scrolling to view items in the collection, at least one of the items being a video item by which the representation thereof comprises a playing of the video item; and

an adapting function responsive to user input to terminate the scrolling of the collection and thereby adapting the playing of the at least one video item after a predetermined period of time.

17. A user interface according to claim 16 wherein the adapting of the playing is selected from any one or more of the group consisting of:

(i) a cessation of the playing;

(ii) adapting differently the playing of one selected displayed video item from the remaining displayed video items;

(iii) adapting a playback speed of the items; and

(iv) to show a reduced subset of frames from said video items.

18. A user interface according to claim 16 wherein predetermined period of time is determined is selected from the group consisting of:

(i) the position of said video items in said list relative to a reference item of said items; and

(ii) the display position of said video items;

19. A computer readable medium having a computer program recorded thereon, the program being executable by a computer to browse a scrollable list including video items on a display device, said program comprising:

means for scrolling the list to modify a displayed subset of said items;

means for terminating the scrolling of said list and playing at least one of said displayed video items after said termination, and adapting the playback of said at least one displayed video item after a predetermined period of time.

20. Computer apparatus for browsing a scrollable collection including video items on a display device, said apparatus comprising:

means for scrolling the list to modify a displayed subset of said items; and

means for terminating the scrolling of said list and playing at least one of said displayed video items after said termination, and adapting the playback of said at least one displayed video item after a predetermined period of time.
