1. A wireless communication system having a base station and a remote unit, the system comprising:

  • a base station transmitter configured to transmit data to the remote unit via a downlink, the base station transmitter capable of transmission using a plurality of modulation levels;

    a remote unit receiver configured to receive the data transmitted by the base station transmitter via the downlink;

    a remote unit transmitter configured to transmit data to the base station via an uplink, the remote unit transmitter capable of transmission at a plurality of transmitter power levels;

    a base station receiver configured to receive the data transmitted by the remote unit transmitter via the uplink;

    a base station controller configured to select a modulation level for the base station transmitter wherein the modulation level is adaptively altered, and the base station transmitter power level remains unchanged; and

    a remote unit controller configured to select a transmitter power level for the remote unit transmitter wherein the remote unit transmitter power level is adaptively altered, and the remote unit modulation level remains unchanged.
