Abstract

A composition of matter comprising a thermoplastic resin composition derived from (i) about 20 weight percent to about 80 weight percent of a polyester derived from a diol comprising cyclohexane dimethanol and a diacid; (ii) about 5 weight percent to about 80 weight percent of a copolycarbonate derived from about 20 weight percent to about 70 weight percent of a 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine and from about 30 weight percent to about 80 weight percent of a second aromatic dihydroxy compound; (iii) about 0 weight percent to about 70 weight percent of a thermoplastic resin, C wherein the thermoplastic resin C is selected from the group consisting of a homopolycarbonate, a poly(estercarbonate), a poly(arylatecarbonate) and combinations thereof, and wherein the resin composition is transparent is disclosed. Also disclosed is a process to prepare this composition and articles therefrom.

Claims

1. A composition of matter comprising a thermoplastic resin composition derived from

i. about 20 weight percent to about 80 weight percent of a polyester derived from a diol comprising cyclohexane dimethanol and a diacid;

ii. about 5 weight percent to about 80 weight percent of a copolycarbonate derived from about 20 weight percent to about 70 weight percent of a 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine and from about 30 weight percent to about 80 weight percent of a second aromatic dihydroxy compound;

iii. about 0 weight percent to about 70 weight percent of a thermoplastic resin, C wherein the thermoplastic resin C is selected from the group consisting of a homopolycarbonate, a poly(estercarbonate), a poly(arylatecarbonate) and combinations thereof, and

wherein the resin composition is transparent.

The composition of claim 1, wherein the diacid is selected from the group consisting of linear acids, terephthalic acids, isophthalic acids, phthalic acids, naphthalic acids, cycloaliphatic acids, bicyclo aliphatic acids, decahydro naphthalene dicarboxylic acids, norbornene dicarboxylic acids, bicyclo octane dicarboxylic acids, 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, adipic acid, azelaic acid, dicarboxyl dodecanoic acid, stilbene dicarboxylic acid, succinic acid, chemical equivalents of the foregoing, and combinations thereof.

3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the polyester further comprises a second diol, selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butanediol, pentane diol;

dipropylene glycol;

2-methyl-1,5-pentane diol;

1,6-hexane diol;

dimethanol decalin, dimethanol bicyclo octane;

triethylene glycol;

1,10-decane diol;

tricyclodecane dimethanol;

hydrogenated bisphenol-A, tetramethyl cyclobutane diol chemical equivalents of the foregoing, and combinations thereof.

The composition of claim 1, wherein the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine comprises less than or equal to 1,000 parts per million of a 2-hydrocarbyl-3-{(4-hydroxyaryl)(2-hydroxyaryl)}phthalimidine relative to an overall weight of the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine, wherein the 2-hydrocarbyl-3-{(4-hydroxyaryl)(2-hydroxyaryl)}phthalimidine has a formula of:

5. The composition of claim 4, wherein the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine further comprises less than or equal to 1,000 parts per million of a substituted or an unsubstituted phenolphthalein relative to an overall weight of the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine.

6. The composition of claim 1, wherein the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine is a 2-phenyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)phthalimidine.

7. The composition of claim 6, wherein the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine comprises less than or equal to 1,000 parts per million of 2-phenyl-3-{(4-hydroxyphenyl)(2-hydroxyphenyl)}phthalimidine relative to an overall weight of 2-phenyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)phthalimidine.

8. The composition of claim 6 wherein the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine further comprises less than or equal to 1,000 parts per million of phenolphthalein relative to an overall weight of the 2-phenyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)phthalimidine.

9. The composition of claim 1, wherein the second aromatic dihydroxy compound is of the formula HO-D-OH, wherein D has the structure of formula:

10. The composition of claim 1, wherein the second aromatic dihydroxy compound is selected from the group consisting of 4,4′

-(3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexylidene)diphenol, 4,4′

-bis(3,5-dimethyl)diphenol, 1,1-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)cyclohexane, 1,1-bis(4′

-hydroxy-3′

methylphenyl)cyclohexane, 4,4′

-[1-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-1,3-cyclohexandiyl]bisphenol, 4-[1-[3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4-methylcyclohexyl]-1-methyl-ethyl]-phenol, 3,8-dihydroxy-5a,10b-diphenylcoumarano-2′

,3′

,2,3-coumarane, 2-4,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)heptane, 2,4′

11. The composition of claim 1, wherein the second aromatic dihydroxy compound is bisphenol A.

12. The composition of claim 1, wherein the second aromatic dihydroxy compound is present in an amount ranging from about 50 to about 80 weight percent based on the total weight of the composition.

13. The composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic resin C is selected from the group consisting of a homopolycarbonate, a poly(estercarbonate) a poly(arylatecarbonate) and combinations thereof.

14. The composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic C is a poly(arylatecarbonate).

15. The composition of claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic C is a homopolycarbonate derived from the second aromatic dihydroxy compound.

16. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition has a transmission of at least 65%.

17. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition has a transmission of at least 75%.

18. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition has a haze of less than 40%.

19. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition has a haze of less than 10%.

20. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition has a glass transition temperature of at least 70°

C.

21. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition further comprises an additive.

22. The composition of claim 21, wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of anti-oxidants, flame retardants, fillers, flow modifiers, impact modifiers, colorants, mold release agents, UV light stabilizers, heat stabilizers, lubricants, antidrip agents and combinations thereof.

23. The composition of claim 22, wherein the additive is present ranging from about 0 to 40 weight percent, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic resin.

24. An article molded from the composition of claim 1.

26. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition further comprises at least one polyester derived from a diol comprising cyclohexane dimethanol and a diacid.

25. A process comprising:

1. mixing a polyester, a copolycarbonate and a thermoplastic C, to form a first mixture;

2. heating the first mixture at a temperature sufficiently high to form a composition of matter comprising a thermoplastic resin composition derived from

a. about 20 weight percent to about 80 weight percent of a polyester derived from a diol comprising cyclohexane dimethanol and a diacid;

b. about 5 weight percent to about 80 weight percent of a copolycarbonate derived from about 20 weight percent to about 70 weight percent of a 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine and from about 30 weight percent to about 80 weight percent of a second aromatic dihydroxy compound;

c. about 0 weight percent to about 70 weight percent of a thermoplastic C; and

wherein the resin composition is transparent.
