Abstract

A method for minimizing a range of at least one operating mode of a powered system provided in a mission plan, the method including determining an amount of time a powered system enters a range of at least one operating mode at least one of prior to beginning a mission and while performing the mission and notifying an operator of the powered system and/or a remote monitoring facility of the amount of time the powered system enters the range of the at least one operating mode while performing the mission and/or will enter the range of the at least one operating mode prior to beginning the mission.

Claims

1. A method for optimizing a range of at least one operating mode of a powered system provided in a mission plan, the method comprising:

determining an amount of time a powered system enters a range of at least one operating mode at least one of prior to beginning a mission and while performing the mission; and

notifying at least one of an operator of the powered system and a remote monitoring facility of the amount of time the powered system at least one of enters the range of the at least one operating mode while performing the mission and will enter the range of the at least one operating mode prior to beginning the mission.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein determining the amount of time the powered system is in the range of the at least one operation mode comprises determining an amount of time spent in at least one of a motoring power mode and a braking power mode.

3. The method according to claim 1, further comprises adjusting at least one operating parameter of the powered system to approximate a desired operating setting.

The method according to claim 3, wherein notifying the at least one of the operator and the remote monitoring facility further comprises notifying the at least one of the operator and the remote monitoring facility of adjusting the at least one operating parameter of the powered system to approximate the desired operating setting.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the powered system comprises a railway transportation system having a power generating unit that comprises at least one locomotive.

6. The method according to claim 1, wherein the powered system comprises a marine vessel having a power generating unit.

7. The method according to claim 1, wherein the powered system comprises an off-highway vehicle having a power generating unit.

8. The method according to claim 1, wherein the powered system comprises a stationary power generating station having a power generating unit.

9. The method according to claim 1, wherein the powered system comprises a network of stationary power generating stations having at least one power generating unit.

10. A computer software code operable within a processor and configured to reside on a computer readable media for optimizing a range of at least one operating mode of a powered system provided in a mission plan, the computer software code comprising:

computer software module for determining an amount of time a powered system enters a range of at least one operating mode at least one of prior to beginning a mission and while performing the mission; and

computer software module for notifying at least one of an operator of the powered system and a remote monitoring facility of the amount of time the powered system at least one of enters the range of the at least one operating mode while performing the mission and will enter the range of the at least one operating mode prior to beginning the mission.

11. A method for minimizing a range of at least one operating mode provided in a mission plan of a powered system, the method comprising:

adjusting at least one operating parameter of a powered system to approximate a desired operating setting.

12. The method according to claim 11 wherein the at least one operating parameter comprises at least one of fuel rate, specific fuel consumption, and horse power.

13. The method according to claim 11, wherein adjusting the at least one operating parameter comprises adjusting a fuel rate to minimize low power operation mode of the powered system.

14. The method according to claim 11, wherein adjusting the at least one operating parameter further comprises adjusting the at least one operating parameters to approximate a desired powering mode.

15. The method according to claim 11, wherein adjusting the at least one operating parameter further comprises automatically adjusting the at least one operating parameter to a higher value for the at least one operating parameter when the at least one operating mode is detected.

16. The method according to claim 11, wherein adjusting the at least one operating parameter further comprises automatically adjusting the at least one operating parameter and creating a mission plan based on the adjusted operating parameter.

17. The method according to claim 11, further comprises determining an amount of time the powered system enters a range of at least one operating mode at least one of prior to beginning a mission and while performing the mission.

18. The method according to claim 11, further comprises notifying at least one of an operator of the powered system and a remote monitoring facility of the amount of time the powered system at least one of enters the range of the at least one operating mode while performing the mission and will enter the range of the at least one operating mode prior to beginning the mission.

19. The method according to claim 11, wherein the powered system comprises a railway transportation system having a power generating unit that comprises at least one locomotive.

20. The method according to claim 11, wherein the powered system comprises a marine vessel having a power generating unit.

21. The method according to claim 11, wherein the powered system comprises an off-highway vehicle having a power generating unit.

22. The method according to claim 11, wherein the powered system comprises a stationary power generating station having a power generating unit.

23. The method according to claim 11, wherein the powered system comprises a network of stationary power generating stations having at least one power generating unit.

24. A method for determining a mission plan based on a maximum speed limit and a minimum speed threshold, the method comprising:

determining a minimum speed threshold; and

creating a mission plan using the minimum speed threshold.

25. The method according to claim 24, wherein determining a minimum speed threshold further comprises including at least one of a lower speed limit as a function of a upper speed limit, a lower speed limit as a constant value throughout at least one of a mission and a part of a mission.

26. The method according to claim 24, wherein determining the minimum speed threshold further comprises providing the minimum speed threshold.

27. A method for determining a mission plan based on at least one of a target reference speed and a target reference power, the method comprising

creating a mission plan with at least one of a target reference speed and a target reference power identified for at least one of an entire mission and a section of the mission;

and

at least one of adhering to and proximately adhering to the at least one of the target reference speed and the target reference power.

28. A computer software code operable within a processor and configured to reside on a computer readable media for determining a mission plan based on at least one of a target reference speed and a target reference power, the computer software code comprising:

computer software module for creating a mission plan with at least one of a target reference speed and a target reference power identified for at least one of an entire mission and a section of the mission; and

computer software module for at least one of adhering to and proximately adhering to the at least one of the target reference speed and the target reference power.

29. A method for determining a mission plan based on at least one of a target reference speed and a target reference power, the method comprising:

determining at least one of a reference target speed and a target reference power;

creating a mission plan with at least one of the target reference speed and the target reference power determined for at least one of an entire mission and a section of the mission; and

operating a powered system to provide power proximate the reference target speed.

30. The method according to claim 29, further comprises establishing at least one of a target speed and a target power.

31. The method according to claim 30, wherein operating the powered system further comprises adhering to at least one of the target speed and target power to provide power proximate the reference target speed.

32. A computer software code operable within a processor and configured to reside on a computer readable media for determining a mission plan based on at least one of a target reference speed and a target reference power, the computer software code comprising:

computer software code for determining at least one of a reference target speed and a target reference power;

computer software code for creating a mission plan with at least one of the target reference speed and the target reference power determined for at least one of an entire mission and a section of the mission; and

computer software code for operating the powered system to provide power proximate the reference target speed.

33. A method for minimizing a range of at least one operation mode of a powered system provided with a mission plan, the method comprising:

creating a mission plan having a time period of operation in the range of the at least one operation mode;

identifying the range of the at least one operating mode in the mission plan; and

revising the mission plan to provide for a power setting outside of the range of the at least one operation mode during a period the at least one operation mode is within a chosen range of a power operation period.

34. The method according to claim 33, further comprises revising the mission plan to average the power setting outside of the range of the at least one operation mode over a greater part of the mission plan wherein a resulting energy for the greater part of the mission plan is proximate the original mission plan.

35. The method according to claim 33, wherein identifying the range of the at least one operating mode is further determined by considering the amount of time the powered system enters the range of at least one operating mode.
