Abstract

A method and device are disclosed. In at least one embodiment, the method includes determining a route of travel, in a navigation device, based upon at least a received destination location; determining whether or not the determined route of travel includes travel on a limited access road; and prompting a user of the navigation device to either accept the determined route of travel or request an alternate route of travel, upon determining that the determined route of travel includes travel on a limited access road. The navigation device, in at least one embodiment, includes a processor to determine a route of travel based upon at least a received destination location and to determine whether or not the determined route of travel includes travel in a country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of a user of the navigation device; and an output device to prompt a user of the navigation device to enable a warning upon the processor determining that the determined route of travel includes travel in a country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of the user.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

determining a route of travel, in a navigation device, based upon at least a received destination location;

determining whether or not the determined route of travel includes travel in a country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of a user of the navigation device; and

prompting a user of the navigation device to enable a warning upon determining that the determined route of travel includes travel in a country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of the user.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including at least one selection to enable output the warning and at least one selection to disable output of the warning.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including at least one selection to enable the warning when driving in a right-side driving country and at least one selection to enable the warning when driving in a left-side driving country.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising outputting the warning upon receipt of an indication of selection to enable the warning and upon determining that the at least one parameter governing output of the warning is met.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the at least one parameter includes at least one of a time parameter and a distance parameter.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the warning is outputtable a plurality of times, after each of a plurality of different parameters are met.

7. The method of claim 4, wherein the outputting includes at least one of a visual and an audible output.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including a selection to warn the user of the navigation device that a vehicle speed limit is based in a unit of measure different from a home country of the user of the navigation device.

9. A computer readable medium including program segments for, when executed on a processor of a navigation device, causing the navigation device to implement the method of claim 1.

62. The navigation device of claim 61, wherein the integrated input and display device is further useable to display driving rules for a selected country, upon receiving an indication of a selection of a displayed country.

10. A method, comprising:

determining a route of travel, in a navigation device, based upon at least a received destination location;

determining whether or not the determined route of travel includes travel in a country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of a user of the navigation device; and

warning a user of the navigation device prior to entry into the country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of a user of the navigation device.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the warning includes displaying a warning indicating that the country to be entered is a country with a rule for driving on side of the road opposite from that in the home country of the user of the navigation device.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the warning includes displaying a warning indicating that the country to be entered is a country with a vehicle speed limit based in a unit of measure different from the home country of the user of the navigation device.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the warning is displayed upon determining that at least one of a time parameter and a distance parameter is met.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the warning is displayed a plurality of times, after each of a plurality of different parameters are met.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein the warning is displayed upon determining that at least one of a time parameter and a distance parameter is met.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the warning is displayed a plurality of times, after each of a plurality of different parameters are met.

18. The method of claim 10, wherein the warning is output at least one of visually and an audibly.

19. A computer readable medium including program segments for, when executed on a processor of a navigation device, causing the navigation device to implement the method of claim 10.

20. A method, comprising:

determining a change of a home location of a user of a navigation device to a country with at least one designated driving rule different from a country of a current home location of the user; and

prompting a user of the navigation device to enable a warning upon determining the change of the home location.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including at least one selection to enable output the warning and at least one selection to disable output of the warning.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including at least one selection to enable the warning when driving in a right-side driving country and at least one selection to enable the warning when driving in a left-side driving country.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising outputting the warning upon receipt of an indication of selection to enable the warning and upon determining that the at least one parameter governing output of the warning is met.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the at least one parameter includes at least one of a time parameter and a distance parameter.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein the warning is outputtable a plurality of times, after each of a plurality of different parameters are met.

26. The method of claim 23, wherein the outputting includes at least one of a visual and an audible output.

27. The method of claim 20, wherein prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including a selection to warn the user of the navigation device that a vehicle speed limit is based in a unit of measure different from a home country of the user of the navigation device.

28. A computer readable medium including program segments for, when executed on a processor of a navigation device, causing the navigation device to implement the method of claim 20.

29. A method, comprising:

determining a route of travel, in a navigation device, based upon at least a received destination location;

determining whether or not the determined route of travel includes travel in another country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of a user of the navigation device; and

prompting a user of the navigation device to view the at least one designated driving rule of the another country upon determining that the determined route of travel includes travel in another country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of the user.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including at least one selection for viewing driving rules of the another country and at least one selection for viewing driving rules of the home country.

31. The method of claim 30, further comprising displaying driving rules for a selected country, upon receiving an indication of a selection of a displayed country.

32. The method of claim 29, wherein the prompting includes displaying a selection for viewing driving rules of each country included in the determined route of travel.

33. The method of claim 32, further comprising displaying driving rules for a selected country, upon receiving an indication of a selection of a displayed country.

34. The method of claim 29, wherein the prompting includes displaying driving rules of the another country.

35. A computer readable medium including program segments for, when executed on a processor of a navigation device, causing the navigation device to implement the method of claim 29.

36. A navigation device, comprising:

a processor to determine a route of travel based upon at least a received destination location and to determine whether or not the determined route of travel includes travel in a country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of a user of the navigation device; and

an output device to prompt a user of the navigation device to enable a warning upon the processor determining that the determined route of travel includes travel in a country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of the user.

37. The navigation device of claim 36, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including at least one selection to enable output the warning and at least one selection to disable output of the warning.

38. The navigation device of claim 36, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including at least one selection to enable the warning when driving in a right-side driving country and at least one selection to enable the warning when driving in a left-side driving country.

39. The navigation device of claim 38, wherein the output device is further useable to output the warning upon receipt, by the processor, of an indication of selection to enable the warning and upon the processor determining that the at least one parameter governing output of the warning is met.

40. The navigation device of claim 39, wherein the at least one parameter includes at least one of a time parameter and a distance parameter.

41. The navigation device of claim 39, wherein the warning is outputtable a plurality of times, after each of a plurality of different parameters are met.

42. The navigation device of claim 39, wherein the outputting includes at least one of a visual and an audible output.

43. The navigation device of claim 36, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including a selection to warn the user of the navigation device that a vehicle speed limit is based in a unit of measure different from a home country of the user of the navigation device.

51. The navigation device of claim 43, wherein the warning is output by the output device at least one of visually and an audibly.

44. A navigation device, comprising:

a processor to determine a route of travel based upon at least a received destination location and to determine whether or not the determined route of travel includes travel in a country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of a user of the navigation device; and

an output device a warning a user of the navigation device prior to entry into the country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of a user of the navigation device.

45. The navigation device of claim 44, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and wherein the warning includes displaying a warning indicating that the country to be entered is a country with a rule for driving on side of the road opposite from that in the home country of the user of the navigation device.

46. The navigation device of claim 44, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and wherein the warning includes displaying a warning indicating that the country to be entered is a country with a vehicle speed limit based in a unit of measure different from the home country of the user of the navigation device.

47. The navigation device of claim 45, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and wherein the warning is displayed upon determining that at least one of a time parameter and a distance parameter is met.

48. The navigation device of claim 47, wherein the warning is displayed a plurality of times, after each of a plurality of different parameters are met.

49. The navigation device of claim 46, wherein the warning is displayed upon the processor determining that at least one of a time parameter and a distance parameter is met.

50. The navigation device of claim 49, wherein the warning is displayed a plurality of times, after each of a plurality of different parameters are met.

52. A navigation device, comprising:

a processor to determine a change of a home location of a user of a navigation device to a country with at least one designated driving rule different from a country of a current home location of the user; and

an output device to prompt a user of the navigation device to enable a warning upon determining the change of the home location.

53. The navigation device of claim 52, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and wherein the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including at least one selection to enable output the warning and at least one selection to disable output of the warning.

54. The navigation device of claim 52, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and wherein the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including at least one selection to enable the warning when driving in a right-side driving country and at least one selection to enable the warning when driving in a left-side driving country.

55. The navigation device of claim 54, wherein the outputting includes outputting the warning upon receipt of an indication of selection, by the processor, to enable the warning and upon determining that the at least one parameter governing output of the warning is met.

56. The navigation device of claim 55, wherein the at least one parameter includes at least one of a time parameter and a distance parameter.

57. The navigation device of claim 55, wherein the warning is outputtable a plurality of times, after each of a plurality of different parameters are met.

58. The navigation device of claim 55, wherein the outputting includes at least one of a visual and an audible output.

59. The navigation device of claim 52, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and wherein the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including a selection to warn the user of the navigation device that a vehicle speed limit is based in a unit of measure different from a home country of the user of the navigation device.

60. A navigation device, comprising:

a processor to determine a route of travel based upon at least a received destination location and to determine whether or not the determined route of travel includes travel in another country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of a user of the navigation device; and

an output device to prompt a user of the navigation device to view the at least one designated driving rule of the another country upon the processor determining that the determined route of travel includes travel in another country with at least one designated driving rule different from a home country of the user.

61. The navigation device of claim 60, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and wherein the prompting includes displaying a plurality of selections to the user, including at least one selection for viewing driving rules of the another country and at least one selection for viewing driving rules of the home country.

63. The navigation device of claim 60, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and wherein the prompting includes displaying a selection for viewing driving rules of each country included in the determined route of travel.

64. The navigation device of claim 63, wherein the displaying includes displaying driving rules for a selected country, upon the processor receiving an indication of a selection of a displayed country.

65. The navigation device of claim 60, wherein the output device includes an integrated input and display device and wherein the prompting includes displaying driving rules of the another country.
