Abstract

A securement device for securing a medical implement, such as a catheter to the body of a patient. The device comprises a pad or base having adhesive on at least a portion of the bottom surface for securing the pad to the body of a patient. A fixed plate and a rotatable adjustable plate are affixed to the pad. The adjustable plate is rotated with respect to the fixed plate to secure a catheter. Posts can be provided on the fixed plate and the adjustable plate to secure a winged catheter. A bracket can be affixed to a fixed plate or an adjustable plate and a cooperating tab can be affixed to the other plate for securing a catheter there between. In a modification, a fixed plate is affixed to the pad and a pair of adjustable plates can be rotatably secured on the fixed plate. Secured on the fixed plate are upright tabs and secured on the adjustable plates are brackets that are adapted to cooperate with the tabs. The adjustable plates can be rotatably moved so as to retain a catheter between the respective cooperating brackets and tabs. In a further modification, a base is secured to a pad and a pair of plates or arms are pivotally mounted on the base for rotation with respect to one another. Complementary pawl and ratchet members are used to enable limited rotation of the plates or arm with respect to one another and to fix the plates or arms in selected adjustment position.

Claims

1. A securement device for securing a medical implement to the body of a patient, the securement device comprising:

a pad having a top surface and a bottom surface, at least a portion of the bottom surface having adhesive thereon for attaching the securement device to the body of the patient;

first and second complementary securement means retained on the top surface of the pad;

the first and second complementary securement means being constructed and arranged to be rotationally adjusted with respect to one another to secure the medical implement.

The securement device of claim 1, wherein the first complementary securement means includes a fixed member secured to the top surface of the pad and the second complementary securement means includes an adjustable plate, the adjustable plate being constructed and arranged for rotational movement relative to the fixed member, the adjustable plate having a pivoted end and a free end, the distance between the free end of the adjustable plate and the fixed member being adjustable by rotation of the adjustable plate to secure the medical implement between the fixed member and the adjustable plate.

3. The securement device of claim 2, wherein first retention means are provided on the first complementary securement means and second retention means are provided on the second complementary securement means.

4. The securement device of claim 3, wherein the first retention means comprises a post secured to the first complementary securement means and the second retention means comprises a post secured to the second complementary securement means.

5. The securement device of claim 3, wherein the first retention means is a bracket and the second retention means is a tab.

6. The securement device of claim 3, wherein the first retention means is a tab and the second retention means is a bracket.

7. A securement device for securing a medical implement to the body of a patient, the device comprising:

a pad having a top surface and a bottom surface, at least a portion of the bottom surface having adhesive thereon for attaching the securement device to the body of the patient;

a fixed plate secured to the top surface of the pad;

an adjustable plate constructed and arranged for rotational movement relative to the fixed plate,

a first securement member connected to the fixed plate;

a second securement member connected to the adjustable plate;

the distance between the first securement member and the second securement member being adjusted by rotation of the adjustable plate to secure the medical implement therebetween.

8. The securement device of claim 7, wherein the first securement member and the second securement member each comprise projections substantially perpendicular to the fixed plate.

9. The securement device of claim 8, wherein the first securement member is a post and the second securement member is a post.

10. The securement device of claim 7, wherein the first securement member cooperates with the second securement member to secure the medical implement.

11. The securement device of claim 10, wherein the first securement member is a bracket and the second securement member is a tab.

12. The securement device of claim 10, wherein the first securement member is a tab and the second securement member is a bracket.

13. The securement device of claim 10, wherein the first securement member and the second securement member each have a textured surface for engaging the medical implement.

14. The securement device of claim 7, further comprising a stabilizing plate disposed on top of the adjustable plate.

15. The securement device of claim 7, wherein rotational movement of the adjustable plate is restricted.

16. The securement device of claim 15, further comprising:

a pawl secured to the fixed plate;

at least a portion of the adjustable plate comprises ratchet teeth; and

the pawl and the ratchet teeth cooperatively engage to resist rotational movement of the adjustable plate in one direction.

17. The securement device of claim 7, further comprising a second adjustable plate movably coupled to the fixed plate, the second adjustable plate capable of rotational movement relative to the fixed plate.

18. A securement device for securing a medical implement to the body of a patient, the device comprising:

a pad having a top surface and a bottom surface, at least a portion of the bottom surface of the pad having an adhesive surface for securing the pad to the body of a patient, the top surface of the pad having a fixed portion thereon and an adjustable portion rotatable with respect to the fixed portion;

a first retention member connected to the fixed portion of the pad;

a second retention member connected to the adjustable portion of the pad;

the position of the second retention member relative to the first retention member being adjustable by rotational movement of the adjustable portion with respect to the fixed portion.

19. The securement device of claim 18, wherein the first retention member and the second retention member each comprise a projection substantially perpendicular to the fixed portion and the adjustable portion.

20. The securement device of claim 19, wherein the first retention member is a post and the second retention member is a post.

21. The securement device of claim 18, wherein the first retention member cooperates with the second retention member to secure the medical implement when the adjustable portion is rotated.

22. The securement device of claim 18, wherein the rotation of the adjustable portion is restricted.

23. The securement device of claim 22 wherein the rotation of the adjustable portion is restricted by a pawl and ratchet.

24. A securement device for securing a medical implement to the body of a patient, the securement device comprising:

a flexible pad having a top surface and a bottom surface, at least a portion of the bottom surface having adhesive thereon for attaching the securement device to the body of the patient;

a base on the pad;

first and second complementary securement means retained pivotally retained on the base;

the first and second complementary securement means being constructed and arranged to be rotationally adjusted with respect to one another to secure the medical implement.

25. The securement device of claim 24, wherein the first and second complementary securement means comprise plates pivoted on a single pivot carried on the base.

26. The securement device of claim 25, wherein the rotation of the plates are restricted by pawl and ratchet means.

27. The securement device of claim 26, wherein the pawl and ratchet means comprises a first pawl on the base for cooperating with ratchet teeth on one plate and a second pawl on the base for cooperating with ratchet teeth on the other plate.

28. The securement device of claim 24, wherein the first and second complementary securement means comprise arms pivoted on a single pivot carried on the base.

29. The securement device of claim 28, wherein the rotation of the arms are restricted by pawl and ratchet means.

30. The securement device of claim 29, wherein the pawl and ratchet means comprises a pawl on the base for cooperating with ratchet teeth on a circumferential surface of both arms to permit adjustment of the arms with respect to one another and to retain the arms in selected adjusted position.

31. The securement device of claim 24, wherein the top surface of the base is at an acute angle with the bottom surface of the base.

32. The securement device of claim 31, wherein the acute angle is on the order of 10-15 degrees.

33. A method for securing a medical implement to the body of a patient, the method comprising:

adhering a securement device to the body of the patient, the securement device having a pad with a top surface and a bottom surface, at least a portion of the bottom surface having an adhesive, the top surface of the pad further comprising a fixed plate secured to the top surface of the pad, an adjustable plate operationally coupled to the fixed plate and capable of rotational movement, a first securement member connected to the fixed plate and a second securement member connected to the adjustable plate;

positioning the medical implement relative to the first securement member; and

rotating the adjustable plate to adjust the position of the second securement member for securing the medical implement between the first securement member and second securement member.

34. A method for securing a medical implement to the body of patient, the method comprising the steps of adhering a securement device to the body of the patient, the securement device comprising:

a pad having a top surface and a bottom surface, at least a portion of the bottom surface having adhesive thereon for attaching the securement device to the body of the patient, and first and second complementary securement means retained on the top surface of the pad;

positioning the medical implement on the pad between the first and second complementary securement means;

and rotating at least one complementary securement means with respect to the other to secure the medical implement.
