Abstract

A mineral composition comprised of at least about 90 weight percent of roofing granules, at least about 50 weight percent of calcium carbonate with a hardgrove grindability index of less than about 70, from about 0.1 to about 1.0 weight percent of a pigmented material, from about 0.1 to about 1.0 weight percent of a composition for inhibiting the growth of an organism selected from the group consisting of algae, bacteria, and mixtures thereof, and less than about 100 parts per million of a metal selected from the group consisting from the group consisting of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, selenium, and silver, and less than about 100 parts per million of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. The mineral composition, when tested in accordance with by ASTM Standard Test D 4977-03, loses less than 5 grams of material.

Claims

1. A mineral composition comprised of at least about 90 weight percent of roofing granules, at least about 50 weight percent of calcium carbonate with a hardgrove grindability index of less than about 70, from about 0.1 to about 1.0 weight percent of a pigmented material, from about 0.1 to about 1.0 weight percent of a composition for inhibiting the growth of an organism selected from the group consisting of algae, bacteria, and mixtures thereof;

and less than about 100 parts per million of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, wherein said mineral composition, when tested in accordance with by ASTM Standard Test D 4977-03, loses less than 5 grams of material, and wherein said roofing granules have a hydrophobicity of less than about 3.0 percent.

2. The mineral composition as recited in claim 1, wherein said mineral composition is comprised of less than about 100 parts per million of a metal selected from the group consisting from the group consisting of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, selenium, and silver, and

3. The mineral composition as recited in claim 2, wherein said pigmented material is a mixture of a resin and a pigment.

4. The mineral composition as recited in claim 3, wherein said resin is a film-forming resin.

5. The mineral composition as recited in claim 3, wherein said mineral composition has a Hunter L value of less than about 30.

6. The mineral composition as recited in claim 4, wherein said pigmented composition is disposed as a coating on said roofing granules.

7. The mineral composition as recited in claim 3, wherein said pigment is an inorganic pigment.

8. The mineral composition as recited in claim 7, wherein said pigment is carbon black.

9. The mineral composition as recited in claim 8, wherein said resin is a synthetic resin.

10. The mineral composition as recited in claim 9, wherein said pigmented material is comprised of from about 10 to about 20 weight percent of said carbon black.

11. The mineral composition as recited in claim 8, wherein said synthetic resin is an ester of pentaerythritol and rosin.

12. The mineral composition as recited in claim 6, wherein said mineral composition is comprised of at least about 95 weight percent of said roofing granules.

13. The mineral composition as recited in claim 12, wherein said mineral composition is comprised of at least about 80 weight percent of calcium carbonate.

14. The mineral composition as recited in claim 13, wherein at least about 60 weight percent of said roofing granules have sizes in the range of from about 600 to about 1400 microns.

15. The mineral composition as recited in claim 13, wherein at least about 80 weight percent of said roofing granules have sizes in the range of from about 600 to about 1400 microns.

16. The mineral composition as recited in claim 13, wherein less than about 4 weight percent of said roofing granules are smaller than 250 microns.

17. The mineral composition as recited in claim 13, wherein less than about 1 percent of said roofing granules are smaller than 250 microns.

18. The mineral composition as recited in claim 13, wherein said roofing granules are comprised of at least 95 weight percent of particles smaller than 3,350 microns.

19. The mineral composition as recited in claim 13, wherein said roofing granules are comprised of at least 95 weight percent of particles smaller than 1700 microns.

20. The mineral composition as recited in claim 19, wherein said roofing granules are comprised of at least 60 weight percent of particles smaller than 1,000 microns.

21. The mineral composition as recited in claim 19, wherein said roofing granules are comprised of at least 30 weight percent of particles smaller than 850 microns.

22. The mineral composition as recited in claim 19, wherein said roofing granules are comprised of at least 3 weight percent of particles smaller than 600 microns.

23. The mineral composition as recited in claim 3, wherein said roofing granules are comprised of an antistrip agent.

24. The mineral composition as recited in claim 3, wherein said roofing granules are coated with antistrip agent.

25. The mineral composition as recited in claim 24, wherein said coating has a thickness of from about 200 to about 2000 nanometers.

26. The mineral composition as recited in claim 23, wherein said antistrip agent is an amine antistrip agent.

27. The mineral composition as recited in claim 26, wherein said antistrip agent is comprised of an amido-amine.

28. The mineral composition as recited in claim 26, wherein said antistrip agent is comprised of a hydroxylamine.

29. The mineral composition as recited in claim 26, wherein said antistrip agent is comprised of a trihydroxyalkylamine.

30. The mineral composition as recited in claim 26, wherein said antistrip agent is comprised of a quaternary amine.

31. The mineral composition as recited in claim 26, wherein said antistrip agent is comprised of a diamide compound.

32. The mineral composition as recited in claim 26, wherein said antistrip agent is comprised of an organic amine comprised of from about 1 to about 18 carbon atoms.

33. The mineral composition as recited in claim 26, wherein said antistrip agent is comprised of 4,4′

-methylenebiscyclohexanamine.

34. The mineral composition as recited in claim 26, wherein said antistrip agent is comprised of mixed polycycloaliphatic amines.

35. A mineral composition comprised of at least about 90 weight percent of headlap granules, at least about 50 weight percent of calcium carbonate, less than about parts per million of a metal selected from the group consisting of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, selenium, and silver and less than about 100 parts per million of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, wherein said mineral composition, when tested in accordance with by ASTM Standard Test D 4977-03, loses less than 5 grams of material.
