Abstract

A device comprises a recordable disc, a substrate adjacent to the recordable disc, and an actuation mechanism fixed to the substrate. The recordable disc includes a base layer and a recordable layer on the base layer. Additional electrodes or magnetic components may be placed on the base layer to provide electromagnetic or electrostatic forces to rotate the recordable disc when acted on by the actuation mechanism. As an example, the invention may utilize MEMS techniques in order to integrate a disc and motor of a disc drive as a common component.

Claims

1. A device comprising:

a recordable disc, the recordable disc including;

a base layer,

a recordable layer on the base layer, and

a means for receiving an actuation force;

a substrate adjacent to the recordable disc; and

a means for converting electrical signals into the actuation force to rotate the recordable disc.

2. The device of claim 1,

wherein the means for receiving an actuation force comprises a dielectric,

wherein the electrical signals comprise variable voltages,

wherein the means for converting the electrical signals into the actuation force comprises at least two electrodes fixed relative the substrate that convert the variable voltages into electrical fields that interact with the dielectric to produce the actuation force.

3. The device of claim 1,

wherein the means for receiving an actuation force comprises at least two conductive plates,

wherein the means for converting the electrical signals into the actuation force comprises at least two electrodes,

wherein the actuation force is an electrostatic force between the at least two electrodes and the at least two conductive plates.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the means for receiving an actuation force comprises at least two coils in the base layer of the recordable disc.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the means for receiving an actuation force comprises magnetic components in the base layer of the recordable disc.

6. The device of claim 5, wherein the magnetic components include magnetically permeable material.

7. The device of claim 5, wherein the magnetic components include permanent magnets.

8. The device of claim 1, further comprising a sensing system for locating a position of the recordable disc within the device.

9. The device of claim 8, further comprising a controller, wherein the controller adjusts the electrical signals according to information regarding the position of the recordable disc from the sensing system.

10. The device of claim 9, wherein the controller adjusts the electrical signals to maintain an axis of rotation and a plane of rotation of the recordable disc.

11. The device of claim 1, further comprising a housing, wherein the substrate is included in the housing.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein the means for converting the electrical signals into the actuation force secures the recordable disc when the device is not operating.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein the recordable disc includes a flexible portion that is deflected when the means for converting the electrical signals into the actuation force secures the recordable disc.

14. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

an actuator assembly including an actuator arm; and

a motion limiter to prevent the actuator assembly from contacting the recordable disc, wherein the motion limiter is located at a distance of less than 25 micrometers from the actuator arm.

15. The device of claim 1, further comprising a hub fixed to the substrate, wherein the recordable disc rotates about the hub relative to the substrate.

16. The device of claim 1, further comprising a shield layer that insulates the recordable layer from electromagnetic fields produced by the means for converting electrical signals into the actuation force.

17. A device comprising:

a recordable disc, the recordable disc including;

a recordable surface, and

at least two magnetic components;

a substrate adjacent to the recordable disc; and

at least two coils fixed to the substrate, wherein electrical current in the coils is adjusted to provide electromagnetic forces on the magnetic components to rotate the recordable disc.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein the magnetic components are permanent magnets.

19. The device of claim 17, further comprising a sensing system for locating a position of the recordable disc within the device.

20. The device of claim 19, further comprising a controller, wherein the controller adjusts the electrical current applied to the coils according to information regarding the position of the recordable disc from the sensing system.

21. A storage media comprising:

a substrate;

a recordable layer adjacent the substrate; and

a shield layer between the substrate and recordable layer, wherein the shield layer insulates the recordable layer from electromagnetic fields.

22. The storage media of claim 21, further comprising at least one magnetic component, wherein the at least one magnetic component is separated from the recordable layer by the shield layer.

23. The storage media of claim 22, wherein the least one magnetic component includes a permanent magnet.

24. The storage media of claim 21, wherein the recordable layer is a magnetically recordable layer.

25. The storage media of claim 21, further comprising a textured fluid bearing surface on the same side of the substrate as the recordable layer.

26. The storage media of claim 25, wherein the substrate is circular, wherein the textured fluid bearing surface is around an outer perimeter of the circular substrate.

27. The storage media of claim 21, wherein the substrate comprises a spin-on glass.

28. A device comprising:

a recordable disc, the recordable disc including;

a recordable surface, and

at least two conductive plates;

a substrate adjacent to the recordable disc; and

at least two electrodes fixed to the substrate, wherein voltage applied to the electrodes is adjusted to provide electrostatic forces on the conductive plates to rotate the recordable disc.

29. The device of claim 28, further comprising a sensing system for locating a position of the recordable disc within the device.

30. The device of claim 29, further comprising a controller, wherein the controller adjusts the voltage applied to the electrodes fixed to the substrate according to information regarding the position of the recordable disc from the sensing system.
