Abstract

A portable information handling system, user interface components thereof, and methods of user control interface and assembly are disclosed. In one embodiment a keyboard assembly, including a large plurality of contacts for a keyboard matrix, connects directly to a palmrest assembly. The palmrest assembly includes a keyboard controller, which decodes keystrokes and then passes the decoded keystrokes to, e.g., an I/O controller on the motherboard of the portable information handling system. This arrangement can greatly improve layout and usage of the motherboard routing spaces, can improve reliability, and can simplify assembly, among other advantages.

Claims

1. A computer palmrest assembly comprising:

a circuit board;

a keyboard controller mounted to the circuit board;

a connection point to receive a keyboard assembly, the connection point having a plurality of electrical connections connected through the circuit board to the keyboard controller; and

a first connector to pass decoded keystroke information from the keyboard controller to another device located off the palmrest assembly.

2. The computer palmrest assembly of claim 1, wherein the connection point comprises a floating docking port to allow the keyboard assembly to be inserted at a range of angles to the palmrest assembly.

3. The computer palmrest assembly of claim 2, wherein the floating docking port also translates laterally to allow the keyboard assembly to be inserted at a range of lateral translations to the palmrest assembly.

4. The computer palmrest assembly of claim 3, wherein the electrical connections of the floating docking port couple to the circuit board through a flexible ribbon cable.

5. The computer palmrest assembly of claim 1, wherein the palmrest assembly further comprises a touchpad matrix and a touchpad controller coupled to the touchpad matrix through the circuit board.

6. The computer palmrest assembly of claim 5, wherein the first connector further passes decoded touchpad matrix information from the touchpad controller to another device located off the palmrest assembly.

7. The computer palmrest assembly of claim 5, the connection point having additional electrical connections that connect through the circuit board to the touchpad controller.

8. The computer palmrest assembly of claim 1, further comprising a second connector to connect the keyboard controller via the circuit board to an ancillary button assembly.

9. The computer palmrest assembly of claim 8, wherein at least one of the electrical connections from the connection point to the keyboard controller further connects to the second connector.

10. A keyboard comprising:

a rigid lower frame having a connection tab along its bottom edge for mechanical connection of the keyboard to a palmrest assembly; and

a conductor matrix overlying the rigid frame and defining conductor crossing points substantially aligned with key locations on the keyboard, the conductor matrix comprising extensions of the matrix conductors onto the connection tab to form a plurality of contacts for electrical connection of the keyboard to the palmrest assembly.

11. The keyboard of claim 10, wherein the tab is approximately laterally aligned with the center of the keyboard as defined by the resting position of a user'"'"'s hands.

12. The keyboard of claim 10, further comprising a plurality of key contacts located at the crossing points of the conductor matrix.

13. The keyboard of claim 12, wherein the key contacts comprise rubber domes.

14. The keyboard of claim 10, wherein at least two crossing points of the conductor matrix are located on the connection tab.

15. The keyboard of claim 14, further comprising at least one key contact overlying a crossing point of the conductor matrix located on the connection tab.

16. The keyboard of claim 14, further comprising a blank overlying the crossing points of the conductor matrix located on the connection tab.

17. The keyboard of claim 10, further comprising a point stick, and conductors connecting the point stick to electrical contacts on the connection tab.

18. The keyboard of claim 10, wherein the rigid lower frame is metallic, the keyboard further comprising an insulating layer interposed between the frame and the conductor matrix.

19. The keyboard of claim 10, the frame further comprising a plurality of locator tabs along its bottom edge, the locator tabs projecting a shorter distance from the frame than the connection tab.

20. The keyboard of claim 10, further comprising a slot nearer the top edge of the frame, the slot having a narrower opening at its top than at its bottom.

21. A method of coupling a keyboard assembly to a portable information handling system, the method comprising:

assembling a keyboard connector into the palmrest assembly of a portable information handling system;

inserting a substantially rigid keyboard assembly connector tab, integral to a keyboard assembly and having electrical connections for the keyboard assembly, into the keyboard connector of the palmrest assembly as part of a process of aligning the keyboard assembly in its final position in the information handling system; and

securing the keyboard assembly to the information handling system.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising assembling a keyboard controller into the palmrest of the portable information handling system to communicate with the electrical connections of the keyboard assembly, and coupling the keyboard controller to a motherboard assembled into the portable information handling system.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the keyboard connector has a limited range of motion in at least one axis with respect to the palmrest assembly to aid in inserting the connector tab into the keyboard connector.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein securing the keyboard assembly to the information handling system comprises inserting a mushroom connector on the information handling system through a slot in the keyboard assembly, such that inserting the keyboard assembly connector tab fully into the keyboard connector causes the mushroom connector to slide in the slot to a position that locks the keyboard to the information handling system.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein securing the keyboard assembly to the information handling system further comprises sliding locator tabs on the keyboard assembly into corresponding slots on the information handling system when inserting the keyboard assembly connector tab completely into the keyboard connector.

26. The method of claim 21, wherein inserting the keyboard assembly connector tab into the keyboard connector makes all of the electrical connections for the keyboard assembly.
