Abstract

A method and system to verify the identity of a user are described. The system may include a communications module to receive a billing telephone number and a private data segment associated with a user; an address detector to obtain a street address associated with the user; a private data processor to obtain one or more identification records, utilizing the obtained street address and the private data segment; and a matching module to compare the one or more identification records with the private data segment associated with the user to generate a match result.

Claims

1. An identity verification system, the system comprising:

a communications module to receive a billing telephone number and a private data segment associated with a user;

an address detector to obtain a street address associated with the user;

a private data processor to obtain one or more identification records, utilizing the obtained street address and the private data segment; and

a matching module to compare the one or more identification records with the private data segment associated with the user to generate a match result.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising a business rules engine to determine whether the match result corresponds to a positive authentication of the user.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the business rules engine is in communication with a configuration module, the configuration module being to identify authentication criteria.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the authentication criteria comprises a partial match.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising an authentication response generator to generate an authentication message based on the match result.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the authentication message is indicative of positive authentication, the positive authentication being based on a partial match of a record from the one or more identification records with the data segment associated with the user.

7. The system of claim 5, wherein the authentication message is indicative of positive authentication, the positive authentication being based on a exact match of a record from the one or more identification records with the data segment associated with the user.

8. The system of claim 5, wherein the authentication message is indicative of a failed authentication.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the communications module is to automatically initiate an alternative identity verification procedure in response to the failed authentication.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the alternative identity verification procedure comprises initiating a telephone call to the billing telephone number.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the private data segment is associated with a social security number of the user.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the private data segment is associated with the date of birth of the user.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the private data segment is associated with driver'"'"'s license information of the user.

14. The system of claim 1, further including a billing number validation interface to obtain validation of the billing telephone number as a payment method for the user.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the address detector is to obtain the street address associated with the user from a third party provider, utilizing the billing telephone number.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the communications module is to receive the street address associated with the user; and

the address detector is to obtain the street address associated with the user from the communications module.

17. A method comprising:

receiving a billing telephone number and a private data segment associated with a user;

obtaining a street address associated with the user;

obtaining one or more identification records, utilizing the obtained street address and the private data segment; and

comparing the one or more identification records with the private data segment associated with the user to generate a match result.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising determining whether the match result corresponds to a positive authentication of the user.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the comparing of the one or more identification records with the private data segment comprises identifying authentication criteria.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the authentication criteria comprises a partial match.

21. The method of claim 17, further comprising generating an authentication message based on the match result.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the generating of the authentication message comprises generating an authentication message indicative of positive authentication, the positive authentication being based on a partial match of a record from the one or more identification records with the data segment associated with the user.

23. The method of claim 21, the generating of the authentication message comprises generating an authentication message indicative of positive authentication, the positive authentication being based on a exact match of a record from the one or more identification records with the data segment associated with the user.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the generating of the authentication message comprises generating an authentication message indicative of a failed authentication.

25. The method of claim 17, wherein the private data segment is associated with a social security number of the user.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the private data segment is the last four digits of the social security number of the user.

27. The method of claim 17, wherein the private data segment is associated with the date of birth of the user.

28. The method of claim 17, wherein the private data segment is associated with driver'"'"'s license information of the user.

29. The method of claim 17, further comprising obtaining validation of the billing telephone number as a payment method for the user.

30. A machine-readable medium having instruction data to cause a machine to:

receive a billing telephone number and a private data segment associated with a user;

obtain a street address associated with the user;

obtain one or more identification records, utilizing the obtained street address and the private data segment; and

compare the one or more identification records with the private data segment associated with the user to generate a match result.

31. A system comprising:

means for receiving a billing telephone number and a private data segment associated with a user;

means for obtaining a street address associated with the user;

means for obtaining one or more identification records, utilizing the obtained street address and the private data segment; and

means for comparing the one or more identification records with the private data segment associated with the user to generate a match result.
