1. A method for measuring a concentration of a free analyte, the method comprising:
- (a) adding a capture ligand for the free analyte to a vessel;
(b) adding a stabilizing agent, or salt thereof, to the vessel, wherein the stabilizing agent comprises the general formula RX,wherein R is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl, aryl, or silicon-based polymer, any of which is optionally derivatized with one or more moiety containing oxygen, nitrogen, halogen, or combination thereof, and wherein X is an oxoanion or oxide of sulfur or phosphorus, an oxoanion or carbonyl derivative of nitrogen, a carboxylate, a borate, a silicate, or a halogen, with the proviso that the stabilizing agent does not comprise an alkyl amine fluoro-surfactant.(c) adding a sample comprising the analyte to the vessel;
(d) adding a detection system to the vessel; and
(e) measuring the concentration of the analyte in the sample using the detection system.

Abstract
The present invention is related to compositions useful for the measurement of free or unbound analyte concentrations in a fluid. The present invention includes the use of capture ligands and stabilizing agents to improve the accuracy of analyte concentration assays. Methods and tools for using the present invention are also disclosed.

1. A method for measuring a concentration of a free analyte, the method comprising:

(a) adding a capture ligand for the free analyte to a vessel; (b) adding a stabilizing agent, or salt thereof, to the vessel, wherein the stabilizing agent comprises the general formula RX, wherein R is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl, aryl, or silicon-based polymer, any of which is optionally derivatized with one or more moiety containing oxygen, nitrogen, halogen, or combination thereof, and wherein X is an oxoanion or oxide of sulfur or phosphorus, an oxoanion or carbonyl derivative of nitrogen, a carboxylate, a borate, a silicate, or a halogen, with the proviso that the stabilizing agent does not comprise an alkyl amine fluoro-surfactant.
