Abstract

The present invention relates to a system and method of providing communications for a mobile vehicle, comprising: a) providing the vehicle with the ability to communicate using a number of different communications methods; b) establishing a list of parameters, said list of parameters defining a set of criteria for determining the preferred attributes of the communications method to be used at any given time; and c) selecting a communications method based on said list of parameters.

Claims

1. A communications system for a mobile vehicle, comprising:

a) a communications module for operating the communications hardware used by said vehicle;

b) a logic module, containing a set of user-defined parameters for selecting the communications method used by said vehicle.

2. The communications system of claim 1, wherein said system functions transparently regardless of the communications method used.

3. The communications system of claim 1, wherein said parameters include polygons defining locations within an area.

4. The communication system of claim 3, wherein said polygons are determinative of the communications method selected.

5. The communications system of claim 2, wherein said parameters include polygons defining locations within an area.

6. The communication system of claim 5, wherein said polygons are determinative of the communications method selected.

7. A method of providing communications for a mobile vehicle, comprising:

a) providing the ability to communicate using a number of different communications methods;

b) establishing a list of parameters, said list of parameters defining a set of criteria for determining the preferred attributes of the communications method in use at any given time; and

c) selecting a communications method based on said list of parameters.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein a manual override is provided to enable a user to select a communications method regardless of said list of parameters.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein said parameters are chosen from one or more of the following:

monetary cost, range, bandwidth and vehicle location.

10. The method of claim 7. wherein said parameters include polygons defining locations within an area.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein said polygons are determinative of the communications method selected.

12. The method of claim 8, wherein said parameters are chosen from one or more of the following:

monetary cost, range, bandwidth and vehicle location.

13. The method of claim 8. wherein said parameters include polygons defining locations within an area.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein said polygons are determinative of the communications method selected.

15. The method of claim 9. wherein said parameters include polygons defining locations within an area.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein said polygons are determinative of the communications method selected.
