1. A subcutaneous cardiac activity sensing shroud, comprising:
- a shroud member adjacent at least a part of the peripheral portion of a housing for an implantable medical device (IMD), said shroud member including one of a recessed region; and
a substantially flat surfaced electrode spaced from and mechanically coupled to the recessed region thereby defining a cavity therebetween and at least one projection feature disposed across a portion of the substantially flat surface.

Apparatus and method according to the disclosure relate to substantially planar cardiac-sensing electrodes and a shroud member utilizing protruding surface features such as one or more discrete and/or elongated projections, bumps, bosses and the like. For example, the exposed exterior surface of an electrode includes one or more protruding features that promote flow of body fluids therearound and potentially reduce tissue encapsulation.

18. A method of fabricating a cardiac sensing shroud assembly, comprising:

providing a resilient shroud member adapted to be mounted around at least a part of the peripheral portion of a housing for an implantable medical device (IMD); forming one of a recessed region and an aperture in a peripheral portion of the shroud member; and coupling a substantially flat surfaced electrode into engagement but spaced from the resilient shroud, such that a cavity is defined therebetween and forming at least one projection feature across a portion of the substantially flat surfaced electrode; wherein the electrode includes at least one of an discrete protruding surface feature and an elongated protruding surface feature on an exposed major surface thereof. - View Dependent Claims (19, 20)
