Abstract

Methods and devices for ablating portions of a tissue volume with electromagnetic radiation (EMR) to produce lattices of EMR-treated ablation islets in the tissue are disclosed, including lattices of micro-holes, micro-grooves, and other structures. Also, methods and devices for using the ablated islets are disclosed, including to deliver chromophores, filler, drugs and other substances to the tissue volume.

Claims

1. A method a method of delivering inert substances into tissue for cosmetic treatments comprising:

ablating skin tissue to form a plurality of voids in the tissue such that the voids are separated by unablated tissue;

applying a substance to the surface of the tissue; and

forcing the substance into the tissue through one or more of the voids.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance is a preparation including at least one substance from the group of titanium oxide, aluminum oxide, silicon, silicon oxide, diamond, quartz, silica, zirconium oxide, hydroxylanitite, apatite, silver, gold, polymethyl methacrylate, acrylic, glass, carbon black, fullerens, astrolens, porous silicon, food dye and hyaluronic acid.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance is a substance that is not classified as a drug by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance is a cosmetic filler.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance is an encapsulated material.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance is Restylane.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance has an index of refraction of approximately 1.3-3.0.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of ablating further comprises ablating to a depth within the epidermis.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the substance is a sun block.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein the substance highly absorbs ultraviolet radiation.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein the substance provides a temporary improvement of cosmetic appearance of the skin.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of ablating further comprises ablating to a depth within the dermis.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the substance is a sun block.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the substance highly absorbs ultraviolet radiation.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the substance is a cosmetic filler.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of ablating further comprises ablating to a depth below the dermis.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the substance is glycerin.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance alters the optical properties of the skin.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the substance alters the reflectance of the skin.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the substance alters the luminescence of the skin.

21. The method of claim 18, wherein the substance alters the transparency of the skin.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance alters mechanical properties of the skin.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the substance alters the elasticity of the skin.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein the substance tightens the skin.

25. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance removes fine lines.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance removes rhytides.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein the substance removes wrinkles.

28. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of forcing substance into the tissue further comprises vibrating the tissue.

29. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of forcing substance into the tissue further comprises applying positive pressure to the tissue.

30. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of forcing substance into the tissue further comprises alternately applying positive and negative pressure to the tissue.

31. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of forcing substance into the tissue further comprises applying an electrical field to the tissue.

32. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of forcing substance into the tissue further comprises applying a magnetic field to the tissue.

33. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of forcing substance into the tissue further comprises manually manipulating the tissue.

34. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of forcing substance into the tissue further comprises massaging the tissue.

39. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of forcing the substance into the tissue further comprises applying an occlusive bandage to the tissue.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the substance is in the form of particles.

41. The method of claim 39, wherein the substance is in the form of a liquid.

42. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of forcing substance into the tissue further comprises applying ultrasound to the surface of the tissue.

43. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of forcing substance into the tissue further comprises applying acoustic energy to the surface of the tissue.

44. A method of delivering an substance into tissue for cosmetic treatments comprising:

applying an substance to the surface of the tissue;

ablating skin tissue to form a plurality of voids in the tissue such that the voids are separated by unablated tissue; and

simultaneously forcing the substance into the tissue through one or more of the voids.

45. The method of claim 44, further comprising occluding the voids.

46. The method of claim 45, wherein the step of occluding the voids includes fixing a material to the surface of the tissue to occlude at least a portion of the voids.

47. A method of delivering an substance into tissue for cosmetic treatments comprising:

ablating skin tissue to form a plurality of separated grooves in the tissue;

inserting an inert substance into the grooves;

compressing the tissue to reduce a area of ablation of the grooves at the surface of the tissue;

fixing the compressed tissue in place; and

allowing the compressed tissue to heal.
