Abstract

An apparatus and program product monitors performance of a computer system via a result size including a result set size of accesses to a database and a page size. Preferred embodiments are directed to a performance monitor that correlates data from existing tools that report data concerning access to the database and the use of system resources. Other embodiments are directed to a performance monitor that is included in an application server associated with the database.

Claims

1. A computer processing system comprising:

at least one processor;

a database accessible to the at least one processor;

a memory coupled to the at least one processor having an application server executed by the at least one processor, the application server processing an access to the database;

a performance monitor that reports performance of the computer processing system relative to a result size of the application server processing the access to the database; and

wherein the performance monitor correlates data from a database monitor that monitors the database and data from an application server log from the application server to generate an output data block that shows information about an application resource including the result size.

3. The computer processing system of claim 1 wherein the output data block includes a number of SQL operations, a number of fetch operations, a number of rows fetched from the database, a page size of a generated web page, and a time to process the application resource.

4. The computer processing system of claim 1 wherein the performance monitor analyzes the data entries in the output data block and highlights those entries with a high number of rows fetched and a large page size with respect to other entries in the output data block.

The computer processing system of claim 1 wherein the performance monitor is integrated into an application server to generate an output data block that shows information about the application resource including the result size, wherein the output data block includes a number of fetch operations, a number of rows fetched from the database, and time to process the application resource.

6. The computer processing system of claim 1 wherein the size of the result size is selected from the group consisting of:

size of data accessed from the database, and size of a generated page.

7. A program product comprising:

(A) a performance monitor for a computer system that reports performance of the computer processing system relative to a result size of an application server processing an access to a database, wherein the performance monitor correlates data from a database monitor that monitors the database and data from an application server log from the application server to generate an output data block that shows information about an application resource including the result size; and

(B) computer-recordable signal bearing media bearing the performance monitor.

8. The program product of claim 7 wherein the output data block includes a number of SQL operations, a number of fetch operations, a number of rows fetched from the database, a page size of a generated web page, and a time to process the application resource.

9. The program product of claim 8 wherein the performance monitor analyzes the data entries in the output data block and highlights those entries with a high number of rows fetched and a large page size with respect to other entries in the output data block.

10. The program product of claim 7 wherein the performance monitor is integrated into an application server to generate an output data block that shows information about an application resource including the result size of data accessed from the database.

11. The program product of claim 10 wherein the output data block includes a number of fetch operations, a number of rows fetched from the database, and a time to process the application resource.

12. The program product of claim 10 wherein the performance monitor analyzes the data entries in the output data block and highlights those entries with a high number of rows fetched and a large page size with respect to other entries in the output data block.

13. The program product of claim 10 wherein the result size is selected from the group consisting of:

size of data accessed from the database and size of a generated page.
