Abstract

A file managing software program for managing a list of elements in a specific sequence in a first file of a computer program, including the steps of copying the first file to form a second file having an identical list of elements as the first file. The user is then permitted to rearrange the sequence of the elements of the second file independently of the sequence of the first file. A display of both the first and the second file list elements is provided to the user. Further embodiments allow the user to categorize, prioritize, and order according to users specified rules of how the second file element list is organized and displayed to provide a more convenient and flexible presentation of the file contents.

Claims

1. A method for managing a list of elements ordered in a first sequence in a first file accessed by a computer program, comprising the steps of:

copying the first file to form a second file having an identical list of first file elements ordered in the first sequence;

arranging in response to user commands, the second file list elements in a second sequence in the second file independently of the first sequence; and

displaying at least two of the second list elements in the second sequence by the computer program while displaying at least two first list elements in the first sequence.

2. A method according to claim 1 further including the step of displaying a user menu with the second file display with the user commands.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of arranging elements includes creating categories in response to command from the user and storing individual second list elements in categories designated by the user.

4. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of arranging elements includes creating priorities of each of the second list elements in response to commands from the user and ordering the second list elements in response to the element priorities.

5. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of arranging elements includes determining the frequency of access of each list element of the second file and ordering the list elements according to the determine the frequency access.

6. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of arranging elements includes determining the most recently accessed second file list elements and ordering the second file list elements according to the most frequently accessed elements.

7. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of arranging elements includes displaying a portion of the second file list elements selected by the user upon the occurrence of either a user pre-selected event or a user pre-selected time.

8. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of arranging elements includes displaying a portion of the second file list elements selected by the user upon the execution of a second computer program.

9. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of arranging elements includes deleting second file list elements.

10. A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of arranging elements includes the displaying of a plurality of file lists each containing list elements wherein at least one list element is displayed upon at least two displayed lists to the user and wherein at least one list includes list elements of other displayed lists arranged uniquely in relation of the other lists displaying that list element.

A method according to claim 1 wherein said step of arranging elements includes the displaying in a single view a plurality of file lists each containing list elements arranged uniquely from the other lists, each list display being configured by a different user specified attribute designating list elements to be displayed.

A computer program product stored in a computer operable media, the computer operable media containing instructions for execution by a computer, which, when executed by the computer, cause the computer to implement a method for managing a list of elements ordered in a first sequence in a first file accessed by a computer program, comprising the steps of:

copying the first file to form a second file having an identical list of first file elements ordered in the first sequence;

arranging in response to user commands, the second file list elements in a second sequence in the second file independently of the first sequence; and

displaying at least two of the second list elements in the second sequence by the computer program while displaying at least two first list elements in the first sequence.

13. The computer program product of claim 12 further including the step of displaying a user menu with the second file display with the user commands.

14. The computer program product of claim 12 wherein said step of arranging elements includes creating categories in response to command from the user and storing individual second list elements in categories designated by the user.

15. The computer program product of claim 12 wherein said step of arranging elements includes determining the frequency of access of each list element of the second file and ordering the list elements according to the determine the frequency access.

16. The computer program product of claim 12 wherein said step of arranging elements includes displaying a portion of the second file list elements selected by the user upon the occurrence of either a user pre-selected event or a user pre-selected time.

17. The computer program product of claim 12 wherein said step of arranging elements includes displaying a portion of the second file list elements selected by the user upon the execution of a second computer program.

18. The computer program product of claim 12 wherein said step of arranging elements includes deleting second file list elements.

19. An information handling system comprising:

one or more processors;

a nonvolatile storage device accessible by the processors; and

a file management program being effective to;

copying the first file to form a second file having an identical list of first file elements ordered in a first sequence;

arranging in response to user commands, the second file list elements in a second sequence in the second file independently of the first sequence; and

displaying at least two of the second list elements in the second sequence by the computer program while displaying at least two first list elements in the first sequence.
