Abstract

An input device for a clinician to control and modify the operation of a mechanical ventilator comprises a graphical display, a representation of a respiratory therapy trajectory to be delivered to a patient, at least one data point associated with the trajectory, and a data input means for the clinician to select a data point and to modify the value of the trajectory at that data point. The present invention provides for the creation and modification of a respiratory therapy trajectory, wherein the ventilator provides a medical gas waveform to a patient according to the respiratory therapy trajectory.

Claims

1. An input device for a clinician to control and modify the operation of a mechanical ventilator, the mechanical ventilator disposed to provide medical gas to a patient according to a respiratory therapy trajectory, the input device comprising:

a graphical display;

a respiratory therapy trajectory representative of the medical gas to be delivered to the patient;

at least one data point associated with the trajectory;

a data input means to select a data point and to modify the respiratory therapy trajectory at the data point;

a display of at least one numerical value, the numerical value being calculated by the input device based upon the respiratory therapy trajectory.

2. The input device of claim 1 wherein the data input means is a drag-and-drop based data input means.

3. The input device of claim 1 wherein at least one data point is in a control category selected from the list of control categories comprising:

trajectory timing, trajectory amplitude, trajectory curvature, and trigger window.

4. The input device of claim 3 wherein at least one data point is indicative of a pressure trajectory at the data point.

5. The input device of claim 3 wherein at least one data point is indicative of a flow trajectory at the data point.

6. The input device of claim 3 wherein at least one data point is indicative of a volume trajectory at the data point.

7. The input device of claim 6 wherein every data point is in a control category selected from the list of control categories comprising:

trajectory timing, trajectory amplitude, trajectory curvature, and trigger window.

8. The input device of claim 1 wherein the input device creates the respiratory therapy trajectory from at least one value of at least one data point.

9. The input device of claim 8 wherein the respiratory therapy trajectory is a vent setup trajectory.

10. The input device of claim 8 wherein the respiratory therapy trajectory is a vent procedure trajectory.

11. The input device of claim 10 wherein the vent procedure trajectory is a recruitment procedure trajectory.

12. The input device of claim 1 further comprising a storage device for storing the modified respiratory therapy trajectory.

13. The input device of claim 12 wherein a respiratory therapy trajectory stored on the storage device is a template for the creation of a new respiratory therapy trajectory

14. A method of controlling the provision of a waveform of medical gas by a mechanical ventilator, the method comprising:

displaying a respiratory therapy trajectory;

receiving a modification to the trajectory;

displaying the modified trajectory and at least one parameter calculated from the trajectory;

controlling a mechanical ventilator to provide the waveform of medical gas according to the modified trajectory; and

displaying the progress of the provision of the waveform of medical gas and at least one patient physiological parameter.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein a plurality of respiratory therapy trajectories are saved on a centralized data storage accessible via a network.

16. The method of claim 14 further comprising the step of maintaining a storage of a plurality of respiratory therapy trajectories from which a respiratory therapy trajectory may be selected.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising the steps of:

receiving modifications to the trajectory after the progress of the provision of the waveform has been displayed; and

storing the trajectory in the storage of respiratory therapy trajectories.

18. The method of claim 14 further comprising the steps of:

receiving a plurality of data points;

creating a respiratory therapy trajectory based upon the data point information.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the step of receiving a plurality of data point information further comprises receiving the plurality of data points by drag and drop data entry.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the respiratory therapy trajectory is a vent setup trajectory.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein at least one data point is representative of a setting selected from the list of settings comprising:

airway pressure, flow, volume, and time.

22. The method of claim 19 wherein the respiratory therapy trajectory is a vent procedure trajectory.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein the vent procedure trajectory is a recruitment procedure trajectory.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein at least one data point is representative of a setting selected from the list of settings comprising:

PEEP pressure, Ptotal, and respiration rate.

25. A method of controlling a mechanical ventilator to deliver respiratory therapy to a patient, the method comprising the steps of:

viewing a respiratory therapy trajectory, the trajectory comprising at least one data point;

selecting a data point;

modifying the data point value to modify the trajectory;

viewing a patient parameter calculated based upon the modified value of the data point; and

modifying the trajectory in response to the patient parameter.

26. The method of claim 25 further comprising the step of creating a respiratory therapy trajectory to be delivered by the ventilator.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein the step of creating a respiratory therapy trajectory is performed using an external device.

28. The method of claim 25 further comprising the step of selecting a saved respiratory therapy trajectory.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein the saved respiratory therapy trajectory is saved on a centralized data storage accessible via a network.

30. The method of claim 25 further comprising the steps of:

initiating the delivery of the respiratory therapy to the patient according to the respiratory therapy trajectory; and

viewing a display of the progress of the prescribed respiratory therapy.

31. The method of claim 30 wherein the display of the progress of the prescribed respiratory therapy comprises the display of the respiratory therapy trajectory and the display of at least one patient physiological parameter.

32. The method of claim 31 wherein the display of the respiratory therapy trajectory and at least one patient physiological parameter comprises displaying a waveform resulting from the delivery of respiratory therapy according to the respiratory therapy trajectory.

33. The method of claim 31 further comprising the step of modifying the respiratory therapy trajectory in response to viewing the display of the progress prescribed respiratory therapy.

34. The method of claim 28 wherein the respiratory therapy trajectory is a vent setup trajectory.

35. The method of claim 33 wherein the respiratory therapy trajectory is a vent procedure trajectory.

36. The method of claim 35 wherein the vent procedure trajectory is a recruitment procedure trajectory.
